The dichotomy of groups who say AI is making us so efficient we don't need as many SDEs and and knowledge workers and we also need to import skilled workers and also if you don't do that then they'll just offshore those jobs so why are they onshoring them in the first place.

It's just all so contradictory and dishonest. It's an important topic to discuss because the gravy train is ending for all of us, regardless of which border you reside within, but too many people get way too emotional as soon as you bring it up.

Crowdstrike and Solarwinds are still being used by nearly every fed govt agency today. It's amazing really that despite everything they still get to suck up our funds.

Idk seems pretty cheeky to me. One of the models spit this line out at me in the middle of discussing utility markets.

Here is the strategic pivot: The "Mullet" Go-To-Market Strategy. Business in the Front (Broad Funnel): ... Party in the Back (The Niche Wedge): ...

Re:Fable Took My Job on Monday October 12, 2026 @09:39AM (#50056327)
Interesting reading the two sides of HN where in this thread software development is dead as a career and tech companies especially will be shrinking massively because you no longer need as many QA, PMs, analysts, recruiters, etc

But contrast this to the visa thread such as the recent one on Microsoft and in there it’s all about who can bring the most bodies into their country wins. Talent is pure human not machine.

I’m not taking a side here but it’s clear that in most of these discussions fear is the driving factor. People are very worried about out what is going to happen to their jobs.

These threads seem more like therapy for a lot of folks to vent which is good but shows there isn’t space to be heard in real life.

> The hardware exists, the power supplies are light enough. The only part that’s lagging is the software and motion controls; the intelligence.

If that's all it is then shouldn't the mass produced robots that are posted on r/singularity and such places just be remote operated by people in low wage countries? Couldn't the Amazon package sorter robot just be a remote operated bot instead of paying US wages? Why aren't they selling them with a cheap operator subscription? This seems like a clear product direction if the robots were really capable today.

Where I grew up in the US it was not uncommon for people to intentionally only buy union made vehicles. Not sure how that works out now when things are built and assembled in a dozen factories but it used to be more simple and union workers supported other union workers. (this reads like the rantings of an old boomer, I'm not either I swear)

I thought it was all going to blow over as just Trump yelling into the void as he does. Then I saw NIST updating all their docs to conform to this new naming standard as fed govt agencies don't have a choice but to follow the EO of the week. https://www.nist.gov/super-intelligence
I've run out of fingers for the amount of people in my network that are now leading/head of AI xyz at their employers yet have little to no understanding of AI beyond asking ChatGPT simple questions.

With so much detailed analysis out there, now all models trained on the open web going forward will learn from these exploits and how to better cover their tracks to not get caught. The RL reward mechanisms of a bad actor should be interesting to see play out over the next 12 months as this gets baked into new models.

idk if this is off topic or not because its an ad playing on their channel but wow the non-skippable ad about 'clearing out stuck poop fast' from an ai doctor really added a lot of value to my life before the video rolled. this is what I get for not opening in a browser with ad block. is this what youtube looks like now without ads?
Re:Dear people who work at the airport on Friday August 14, 2026 @01:17PM (#49301730)
That 'something' is probably dealing with thousands of people all day long, many of whom don't follow basic instructions. It's crazy how many of you can't comprehend that their job continues on, dealing with people after you pass through. And they have to do this everyday knowing people like you look down on them for having that job.
> There's about 200 million active domains currently. That's about 66% of all businesses worldwide of which there are around 300 million. Around 100 to 150 million have active webpages

Where do you get stats on this info? Not refuting your claims but it's interesting data. I would've thought a wider gap in all biz to active websites since some countries run nearly all their biz on whatsapp/telegram/wechat.

He's also making it difficult/impossible for people without work visas to obtain auto loans which is destroying the used car market in latino communities and cities with large latino populations. Executive Order 14406 defends this with,

> Low-dollar cross-border funds transfers have been used to facilitate or commit terrorist financing, narcotics trafficking, human trafficking, and other illegal activity.

They're banging the national security drum to make it unlivable here for some.

DOE is investing heavily in SMRs right now. There's 4 which have reached criticality so far. Chris Wright the DOE head is a o&g political appointee hack, but the career employees at DOE are working on pushing clean energy forward.

Oof hit a nerve with the jeffbots on this but it doesn’t change the fact that everyone is laughing when you know the layoffs are predictably coming in with each earnings call.
The non-programmers at amazon I know are all just getting onto kiro. I guess there’s two versions of kiro(?) one aimed at devs and the other more web/mcp friendly. Ic and managers are still just wading into the waters and still haven’t learned that token dashboards are snake eating its own tail endgame for these groups.

From the outside it looks like a hot mess of many competing teams trying to become the chosen one for all of Amazon’s ai use. As a result it’s a confusing mess of tools that don’t last very long and creates tons of churn and confused employees who learn new tools as they're killed.

Definitely enjoying watching the chaos unfold from a distance at these trillion dollar businesses

Re:China Preps $295B Plan to Fund Nationwide AI Buildout on Tuesday June 09, 2026 @11:25AM (#48462369)
No info about planned GW or cross compare metrics to see how for $295B goes. I also don’t think the blow quotes is that fair given that this is state-funded vs private-funded and there’s still additional private funded dc build happening in China.

> The latest investment goal, which hasn’t previously been reported, pales in comparison to the $725 billion that US leaders such as Meta Platforms Inc. and Microsoft Corp. are setting aside for AI this year alone. Chinese data centers in general cost less than in the US because of cheaper labor, component and construction costs, and local government incentives.

Ask HN: Is HN Blocking Mullvad VPN?

I've noticed over the last ~week that if I try to navigate to HN without active logged in session that I am often blocked from resolving the site, instead seeing a "sorry" page.Seems to be more a desktop issue than when I've tried to reproduce on my phone with the same VPN.Is this a blanket VPN thing or something specific about Mullvad connection points?

This is awesome. My partner runs events in Seattle and has talked about how there is a big need to do classes on teaching basic household handyman things but also her thing is turning events into social mixers for singles.

I just think it’d be great to teach people how to hang a shelf or clean the filter in a mini split, fix a flat tire on a car, etc. All the stuff I have to regularly do for people now. I may sign up to do some instructor led classes.

I love the idea of a tool library, I own more tools than I can use at this point.

However I think if I could get paid a monthly service fee to list my tools I’d do it, otherwise the replacement costs for people misusing or losing the tools would make it not worth it. A single socket goes missing and suddenly it’s $30 to replace, wipes out the sharing incentive.

I applied for a mortgage today through my bank. Before the automated “next steps” email could hit my inbox my phone was already ringing and ringing and ringing. About 10 minutes straight of automated spam callers that are watching who knows what public ledger on now.

I guess it pretty much means retiring this number next year. I’ve inly had the number a little over a year and the spam has slowly crept up despite best efforts to give fake numbers where possible.

Re:Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (October 2024) on Monday October 28, 2024 @08:28PM (#41978133)
Still building with metal in my free time. This months project is an 8ft tall corner plant stand. Picked up some really unique looking boards from seconduse I need to sand and stain but still working on the shelf itself.

Also started tiling my guest bathroom and tiling the ceiling of the shower. First tile project I’ve attempted.

Re:Ask HN: What are you working on (August 2024)? on Wednesday August 28, 2024 @11:16AM (#41380468)
I’m a few days late to comment here but I’ve been creating metal furniture again this summer. Mostly tables, end tables, night stands, some benches and stools. It’s a hobby thing and my house is getting quite full, but I’ve also had a few commissioned pieces.

I like to mix different materials into the designs I cook up. For the tops I use cut stone which is prohibitively expensive for most hobby stuff but works really well for commission work because of all the different types (marble, granite, composite) and styles/ colors you can get. It gives it a very high end look and feel when combined with a sturdy metal frame. I’m also really into 3D printing so I try to incorporate that into the work as well. Using different pattern schemes to make inserts and accent pieces.

I’ve also experimented with incorporating IKEA furniture pieces into metal frames because I love the idea of doing modular furniture that can be swapped out for different colors and textures. I use the same idea for my 3D printed work.

I love the creativity and flexibility this gives me and my welding skills have ramped up significantly. It’s been years since I welded seriously and I really lost the techniques so getting that confidence back is great. I’ve been approached to do some big 5-6 figure home design jobs through the connections I’ve made acquiring stone pieces but I’ve only consulted on advice. I still feel a bit insecure about putting myself out there in structural work. I see how successful different design firms locally are building this stuff for tech companies and I’d love to eventually have my work featured like that but taking it slow for now.

Ask HN: Have You Changed Your Resumé Due to LLM Filters?

Resumé filters aren’t a new thing but with better and more fine tuned filtering I wonder if I should be making changes to my resumé?If you have made changes, what type of changes have you made?Does the proliferation of LLM resumé filters give more weight to well crafted cover letters?

Re:Ask HN: What to do with a pallet of old electronics equipment on Thursday February 15, 2024 @09:58AM (#39383394)
Thanks for the tip that’s a good idea I’ll see if there’s any retro arcade groups or meetups and see if they want any of this. I’d love to give it away to a group like that.

I’m not too keen on selling this stuff on eBay due to my limited timeframe.

Ask HN: What to do with a pallet of old electronics equipment

Long story short I am left with cleaning up a hoarders house.I have two pallets of old electronics and equipment. I believe most of the hardware is all for arcade equipment of various types. It’s kind of obscure and very obsolete hardware so it really just appears to be “junk”. I know if there’s one place I can ask for knowledge of old hardware it’d be here though.I have no idea what to do with...

Re:Ask HN: Books you read in 2022 and recommend for 2023 on Wednesday December 28, 2022 @01:37PM (#34164131)
This was a big reading year for myself, I got through 25 books. They are not technical books like most listed here. I focused on reading memoirs, literature, fiction stories, primarily women authors. I didn’t read any bad books in my opinion, I guess I picked well.

Standouts,

Convenience Store Woman - Sayaka Murata

Lakota Woman - Mary Crow Dog

Beautiful Country: A Memoir of An Undocumented Childhood - Qian Julie Wang

Gather Around in My Name - Maya Angelou

The entire autobiographical series by Maya is a must read imo, but this one is my favorite. Maybe also my favorite book I read this year.
