a terse comment isn't necessarily unsubstantive. the obvious subtext is that they are proposing authoritarianism

I wish Freud was alive today. I can't help but think that the hysterics manifested in mainstream or social media are not actually real, that people wouldn't make such illogical steps if they were alone in an island. Instead they seem to be reactions , rooted in something deeper somewhere that's causing mass hysterias and delusions. It does manifest in the shifting ways of life too, the lack of sex, the lack of humor and the limited ambition shown by the 1-2 latest generations.

I do love Taibbi's writing, even though i think he spends too much time criticising things that soon won't matter

Looks like he is consistent

Re:Seeking Truth in a Time of Misinformation on Thursday July 09, 2020 @11:11AM (#23781116)
Social media, if anything, played a positive role and showed its strengths. Thanks to early warners, some people managed to keep their sanity, some others found flaws in studies, some others were warning people while the media was being partisan, some others taught people how to behave while government and the media were delirious about going/not going to protests/rallies etc. The "media of record" will never admit it, but the internet/social media proved that "access to multifaceted information" dominates over "parroting the elites". People are learning to distrust the mainstream elites, and that's a good thing.
too long to read ;

balaji has a beef with mainstream journalists since many months ago, and probably rightly so. I can't help but feel however that this whole outrage is covert advertising for Clubhouse which (even though i am not famous enough to use) seems basically a repackaging of the decades-old concept of phone hotlines.

That said, balaji is right, the media overplayed their role as arbiters of truth and are now losing. I d trust my twitter feed better than any paper.

brave's biggest innovation is the introduction of direct payments. i hope that catches on, even if brave fails, because it will truly transform the economics of the internet.
Re:Fujitsu announces permanent work-from-home plan on Monday July 06, 2020 @12:38PM (#23749626)
people dont want to pay 2 rents for no reason though, unless the rents are very cheap, so they won't be able to price these things high anymore. probably
Re:Fujitsu announces permanent work-from-home plan on Monday July 06, 2020 @12:27PM (#23749521)
There is no middle ground -- WFH is self-reinforcing trend, because offices are much less useful when they are half-empty and all processes have go online. As soon as some coworkers move, others follow. If people start working 2-3 days at home ... they start to think about moving somewhere better. I wonder what is the endgame of this rearrangement? Perhaps nomadism will become common? But in that case, cities will lose even more cohesion than they ve lost so far. If we take away the work factor, the question "where do i/my family live" becomes much more open-ended. Obvious choice #1 is near extended family. What else motivates people to move?

Ask HN: Will good tech times come again?

It seems like 2005 is 1000 years away. There 's no way today you can launch a silly idea like twitter or groupon and expect it to go anywhere. It won't , there is no money to make through advertising, acquiring users means paying levies to google, users' attention is oversaturated and impossible to attract, the tech press is too busy cancelling people small or big, users can't handle an...

The web already had solved that problem, even with bootstrap version 2. Surely apple provides primitives such as border-radius and gradients, which are enough to create an eye-catching button?
Re:The Comeback of Fun in Visual Design on Sunday July 05, 2020 @10:18AM (#23738824)
Design is not an optimization procedure like chip design. It's dominated by trends, like fashion. There is a small subset of people who care about optimal design, which measures things like perceptual reaction time etc. That's the military

Re:The Silence Is Deafening on Saturday July 04, 2020 @08:59AM (#23731937)
I 'd really like to see some research on this. Is there any studies from reddit etc to show whether positive or negative reinforcement works better?
Re:The Silence Is Deafening on Saturday July 04, 2020 @08:57AM (#23731925)
A deeper issue is the cultural shift to an overly judgemental culture which has been built thoughout the decades. The media always, always has thrived on creating moral panics, but the public wasn't always so gullible to them.

There's a noticeable shift towards conservativism and a constant preoccupation with their public image among younger generations. It's even noticeable in statistics , e.g. disapproval of nudism.

Re:The Silence Is Deafening on Saturday July 04, 2020 @08:55AM (#23731915)
There are a lot of people IRL who blabber on, usually people ignore them/consider them obnoxious. Somehow they haven't developed this ability online
Most apps are being installed for access to notifications. Apple is incentivizing this behavior by refusing to implement browser notifs. The sad state of the web in 2020 is only matched by the irony of these companies being more profitable than ever.
Re:Politically-correct witch-hunt is killing free speech on Thursday July 02, 2020 @09:22PM (#23720105)
thats not even an extreme leftist opinion, that's terrorism.
Re:Politically-correct witch-hunt is killing free speech on Thursday July 02, 2020 @09:02PM (#23719954)
sorry i would claim otherwise. Nobody has been cancelled for expressing leftwing-or extreme leftwing- ideas

it may detract from your central point, but it also explanis why one side of the spectrum won't be willing to contribute to an armistice

Re:Politically-correct witch-hunt is killing free speech on Thursday July 02, 2020 @08:59PM (#23719931)
Removal of PC culture will be seen as a weakness and a concession so it's not going to happen. It has been going on for so long, that parts of the spectrum of opinion have stopped caring about the mainstream. There's a lot of silent minorities that have just left - and removal of Cancel Culture won't bring them back. The concept of Voice has been abused to toxic levels, and some groups have simply chosen Exit (E.g. isnt it interesting how the reddit , the frontpage of the internet, has been left devoid of right-of-center economics?). What's going to happen is that more groups will choose to Exit, bringing the end to mass mainstream culture
Re:Web Dark Ages on Thursday July 02, 2020 @09:24AM (#23712828)
Really all we need is to stop the worship of the mobile. Mobile is uniform and limited, and sadly it has made desktop uniform and limited as well.

Somehow even highly technical interfaces, e.g. DNZ zone editors are now made mobile-first. I wonder, is the majority of people really editing zone files on their phone? don't people value their time anymore?

Re:Web Dark Ages on Thursday July 02, 2020 @09:19AM (#23712793)
Well they look like a lot of fun for dark ages. If anything that was the spring of the web, nowadays things have moved to mobile and web is neglected.

And i dont get the hate for tables, they are really handy to center stuff vertically/horizontally, and to scale an interface gracefully (e.g. image column takes up 15% of width), in a way that 12-grid systems fail. HN is tables.

One thing that responsive design does is it makes the zoom out/in gesture useless, while tables can preserve that.
