I immediately noticed this as well. In many cases, they weren't even LLCs, just names.

Maybe my memory is hazy from that period, but I don't recall the clear call to action to request five-figure loans as an individual, (almost) all of which appear forgiven.

Re:Ingesting PDFs and why Gemini 2.0 changes everything on Wednesday February 05, 2025 @02:05PM (#42953466)
One major takeaway that matches my own investigation is that Gemini 2.0 still materially struggles with bounding boxes on digital content. Google has published[1] some great material on spatial understanding and bounding boxes on photography, but identifying sections of text or digital graphics like icons in a presentation is still very hit and miss.

Non-scientific answer: if this is anything like ISO27001, it's moreso a certification of processes that presumably govern the creation of all models.
Honest question, but how do we as a society culturally align on who has the right to space in low Earth orbit?

I understand there are treaties that prevent ownership of space in general, but it seems like at some point you could reach such density of satellites that at best, it impairs function, and at worst creates potential collisions.

I think he's insinuating that with a figurehead such as Sam Altman, that Sarah and Kevin might be more showpieces than given autonomy to operate.
+1 to Airalo. The country specific ones are super cheap. $7 for 2GB or something like that?

I once did the 30-day Global one for I think $20 for 4GB or so. Worked all over Europe + Middle East. Was very impressed.

Data-only global eSims are super cheap. Having done a lot of international travel lately, this is undoubtedly the best way to go.

Cheaper and better coverage too.

Hey Julien, very nifty!

Can you comment on the inspiration/ similarity with the Laravel Debugbar [1]? I noticed your GH says "Laravel by Night" :)

Reading the comments here, largely negative pointing, I couldn't help but recently feel like IBM was really impressive with their work on Quantum System 2 [1]. I'm not knowledgable enough to know if there's really progress in what they presented, but it seemed to help justify why this is still a $160B+ company.

Re:Chat with your database using AI on Sunday April 09, 2023 @10:57AM (#35503331)
Perhaps I haven't figured out the best way to query ChatGPT, but isn't the magic here that your approach implicitly already understands all the tables/ relationships that exist within database?
Re:Chat with your database using AI on Sunday April 09, 2023 @10:32AM (#35503059)
I found myself wanting something like this the other day trying to query some BigQuery tables I was unfamiliar with.

With that being said, from my vantage, the value of a tool like this is writing the SQL query for me that I can understand, verify, and reuse.

Since it doesn't look you do that, and only return charts or "answers", you're locking users into an analytics solution rather than a tool that provides flexibility to any traditional BI solution.

Perhaps this is explained by a difference in target audience.

Seeing "Powered by GoDaddy" in the footer seems juxtaposed to a company that supposely developed an AI chatbot (even if just forwarding requests on to ChatGPT).
What's the cross section of users willing to configure this setup (which requires the Mac app host) that want these "restricted" applications that also do not want to jailbreak their devices?

I suppose I am many years removed from the jailbreak scene so it's not clear to me if this represents a viable alternative for the regular user, and/or if Cydia is still functional. The latter of which was very much the defacto "aftermarket" app store.

Mind speaking to the monetization component of your app? It's not readily visible from your links.

I ask as I've built a similar tool that supports portfolio rebalancing and helps generally understand portfolio health. I found the niche of "DIY" investors willing to pay for software somewhere between fully automated and hands-off is small and although I've never pushed towards aggressive monitization, it always seemed like most self-service investors are conditioned to only pay for data (which I suppose in part your application presents).

Re:Ask HN: How do people find your blog? on Sunday December 18, 2022 @12:27PM (#34039926)
Can you explain the thought process behind Google Ads on the site?

Despite my various ad blockers (Pihole, etc), I would generally view ads on a blog as setting a tone akin to microtransactions on a video game, rather than trying to build a brand or simply document thoughts/ be viewed as a thought leader.

Made me think of the game "Escape from Tarkov", which has been out for years and has a subset of a mall-setting map called "IDEA" using the same blue/yellow color pallette (1).

Ask HN: If you're in a 100% remote role, should you turn your camera on?

Now that we're a bit further removed from the immediate onset of Covid and everyone being forced to work from home, there are many roles that are being created with the expectation of being able to work remotely indefinitely.Recognizing the inappropriateness of generally asking someone to turn on their camera during a small group discussion or client meeting in which they are contributing, I'm...

Re:UBS Acquires Wealthfront for $1.4B on Wednesday January 26, 2022 @04:03PM (#30091806)
My first experience with Wealthfront was an IRA. After a short period (<year), I realized it was rather simplistic to take a predictable regular deposit and split it across a few ETFs to stay on track for their recommended portfolio. I ended up opening a taxable account to take advantage of tax-loss harvesting (materially more difficult to do myself). I'd be curious what proportion of their AUM sits under taxable vs retirement accounts.

Nonetheless (forgive the plug), I ended up building a simple app that would help me automate the thinking of balancing my portfolio. Here's an example using a Wealthfront-genereated portfolio (ETFs + targets): https://correctmyportfolio.com/scenario/share/YISu5jI3

Turns out figuring out where to optimize a portfolio to a target without selling, or other rules (like sell thresholds, cash buffers, etc.) is a bit more complicated than Excel would allow.

Re:UBS Acquires Wealthfront for $1.4B on Wednesday January 26, 2022 @03:34PM (#30091390)
Yes. Once you cross a certain threshold (I think it's $100k portfolio), they'll switch you to "Direct Indexing", which automates individual stock purchases.

Re:Cryptocurrency company Ripple says SEC lawsuit is imminent on Tuesday December 22, 2020 @02:15PM (#25509969)
> But I could more easily just use my GBP to directly buy Euros, with one less exchange rate and one less transaction in the process.

In this scenario, the transacting bank would need to have (or want) to have GBP for them to sell Euros. While I agree this is a poor example, think of the more obscure conversions. Swedish kronas to South African rands, etc.

Anyway, I won't pretend XRP is a perfect solution. Just seems to me that it solves the edge cases of liquidity while doing so more cost effectively, which in turn benefits the consumer.

Re:Cryptocurrency company Ripple says SEC lawsuit is imminent on Tuesday December 22, 2020 @01:25PM (#25509427)
I have no experience here, so I understand this in theory, but in practice, banks would somewhat indefinitely have some digital sum of a range of currencies in which they may not wish to have exposure to. How do you solve for that as a bank?
Re:Cryptocurrency company Ripple says SEC lawsuit is imminent on Tuesday December 22, 2020 @01:22PM (#25509400)
Adding a currency that everyone can agree upon as the "intermediary" prevents you from needing to hold huge sums of random currencies. For example - you're a bank in the UK so your fiat currency is GBP. If you want to manage transactions within just Europe, you would need to have Euros, Croatian Kunas, Danish Krones, Swiss francs, Polish zloty's, Russian rubles, Turkish liras, etc. Therefore you as a bank are subject to the ongoing valuations of these currencies, not to mention you've got hundred of thousands of (insert currency here) tied up in these accounts. As a bank, you have to correct for this inefficiency so you produce conversation rates that are not consumer friendly, but necessary to recoup the money you've lost setting aside all those accounts.

With XRP, you replace all those currencies with some amount of XRP. Because all member-banks use XRP when you need to transaction, say GBP to EUR (simple example), you would take your GBP, convert it to XRP, then use that XRP to buy EUR from another bank, that bank then can hold the XRP or chose to immediately convert it back to EUR through other banks. Like I mentioned previously, that whole transaction takes a few seconds, so you're effectively not subject to market volatility that could impact the transaction itself.

Re:Cryptocurrency company Ripple says SEC lawsuit is imminent on Tuesday December 22, 2020 @10:44AM (#25507363)
I could be wrong, but I always understood the primary purpose of XRP as a mechanism to increase liquidity. Since Ripple is all about cross-border payments, you're potentially dealing with hundreds of currencies. So if you were a bank that needed to do global business, you'd be required to hold a subset of each traded currency in nostro/ vostro accounts. XRP was then meant to be the "standardized" currency that member-banks in the Ripple ecosystem could transaction with.

Since you as a bank would only need your own fiat currency + XRP, you could materially cut down on additional costs from holding all the other accounts. When it comes time to convert currencies, because Ripple (XRP) transactions settle in seconds, the period you're exposed to market volatility is virtually zero, so you can move in and out of a position in XRP in exchange for whatever other currency you need almost immediately.

Re:GFXBench: Apple M1 on Friday November 13, 2020 @02:54PM (#25086639)
Without directly commenting on the performance of the M1 chip, I still believe the biggest hurdle is software compatibility. Apple's "universal binary" seems dubious, and I don't believe Rosetta 2 is anything more than emulation software which will have performance ramifications.

Microsoft has faced this same problem themselves. Releasing the Surface Pro X is a great example of a machine that is limited by software.

As others have noted in other threads, Apple's ability to run iOS apps natively on the M1 chip seems like a great mechanism to lower the switching costs, though I maintain the chasm left to cross is software.

This is all of course, notwithstanding the "locked down OS" concerns from the front page for the past day or so. Does an M1 Macbook Air with BigSur make a competent development machine?

Re:Show HN: Rentify – Build your rental empire today on Friday October 16, 2020 @12:24PM (#24802328)
Can you explain the market for this? Is this meant to be a consumer-driven replacement to (predatory) chains like Rent-a-Center?
If one is not currently at a company with a "brand name", how else are they supposed to get noticed amongst a pile of other "brand name" applicants?

Is the same true for educational backgrounds? If you don't have an Ivy League degree, what methods can you use to put yourself in the running vs those that do? Side projects seems like a good option in both cases to appear competitive.
