Does your product development team have communication issues?

Doing more frequent retrospectives where you reflect on what hasn't been going well can help. A big challenge with that is creating an environment where people feel comfortable opening up and sharing their concerns.Does your team do retrospectives? How do you create a space where people feel comfortable sharing?Do you have other ways of solving communication problems?

Have you ever tried talking about it? If so, what reaction did you get from people?
It sounds like the hardest part is getting people to authentically pursue it in the first place. That is a big hurdle.

Have you had success informing others and getting them to see the value of it?

How so?

Have you ever been in a corporate environment where you could give real feedback?
Re:Does your team do retrospectives? on Thursday May 11, 2023 @11:47AM (#35903877)
Thank you for sharing. Based on that description I can see why you doubt its usefulness. I've been a part of retros that cover the whole spectrum of usefulness. Some feel like going through the motions just so we can check a box whereas as others have helped transform our team dynamics.

Did you you always a scrum master running the retro?

Re:What's the hardest part about doing retrospectives? on Wednesday May 10, 2023 @07:00PM (#35894644)
This is definitely a challenge. You can spend an hour coming up with great ideas for how to improve and then forget all about them as soon as you start the next project. I've seen that happen a lot.

Have you tried any solutions for this?

When you mention blaming do you mean trying to hold someone accountable when they've done something wrong?
Re:Do you have a perfect relationship with your PM? on Saturday May 06, 2023 @10:47AM (#35841871)
Well then it sounds like there's an opportunity to improve that relationship!

Ah I should have specified that. I meant Product Manager.

Do you have a perfect relationship with your PM?

I'm working on a new project to try to help development teams work better together. I'm particularly interested in improving interactions between developers and PMs. I've been both a developer and PM. I think there's a lot of opportunity to improve this dynamic.Let me know if you want to talk about this and hear about what I'm building.

How do you break down user stories?

In my experience it usually goes something like this:1. Product manager creates user story.2. PM meets with engineers to discuss the story and answer questions.3. Engineers meet to break down the story into engineering tasks. This usually happens in a live meeting where someone is taking notes in a google doc and then someone adds all the tasks to Jira. How do other people do it? What works well...

Re:Ask HN: How do you manage notifications in your company? on Wednesday November 09, 2022 @05:20PM (#33538843)
What does a single notification platform look like to you? Is it a web, desktop or mobile app? Would you use a separate application just for keeping track of your notifications? I can see how it would be useful but also it seems like it could be a pain to add another app you have to give attention to.
Re:Ask HN: How do you manage notifications in your company? on Wednesday November 09, 2022 @05:17PM (#33538803)
How do you set things to high priority? Are you flagging emails after you read them?
Re:Ask HN: How do you manage notifications in your company? on Wednesday November 09, 2022 @01:52PM (#33536181)
Have you tried anything to solve this? Are there any products you've come across that try to solve this? I also have this problem but I'm not aware of any companies that are trying to solve it.
I can relate to that. I've used scrum at several companies but only two have done it the "correct" way. All the other companies made an attempt but I found that doing scrum halfway can be worse than not doing it at all. We were getting all the overhead of the process without the benefits.

Question about the general process you described, how did that work for you? Did you have any issues or complaints? Did your team have any trouble hitting deadlines?

What development process do you use?
Lol

Anyone interested in me helping your team with scrum for free?

I'm curious to see if any company would want someone from outside their team to help run scrum ceremonies.I'm a PM and developer but the best part of my job is running scrum meetings, especially the retrospective. I think I could add a ton of value to any team trying to do agile development just by running a couple of meetings for you each week.Who wants to try this? I would do it for free the...
