News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

brokenmachine

Why not a physical switch you have to press to enable defrost mode?

Then at least the hacker couldn't just switch off 1000 freezers that are full of food at once.

$0 for Wireguard.
Ha! I bet nobody learned anything.
If they could give their AI Agent access, then by definition it wasn't a secure system.
Re:Detecting model weight tampering in GPU memory (Rome attacks) on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @05:58PM (#50188243)
It's a bit of a mouthful... :)
Not buying AI, buying other assets.
The marketing tries to tell us that we're on the brink of AGI, but still in 2026 putting a random laptop reliably to sleep remains an open problem.
Not to jump on you, but it just irritates me when people anthropomorphize LLMs...

LLMs don't "understand".

Don't fall for the marketing and overstate their ability.

The companies won't give up their scams without a fight.

They'll double down with secure boot and encrypted everything.

Can the bubble please pop soon so I can buy the dip before retiring?
In the article it says he was annoyed with Claude because it wasn't solving some other problem that he was asking it about.

Reading between the lines, it seems he may have got annoyed and made a wrongthink joke to a computer and eventually got arrested for it.

A joke with a computer, no matter how distasteful, is not past my reasonable line.

Getting arrested for making a joke in your own home is, however.

Of course, it stands to reason... if he is charged with planning to carry out a shooting, logic dictates they found a gun? Or plans to obtain one? Bullets?

Or anything at all other than an email from an offended slop generating plagiarism machine?

If you don't have a factory, then what's the point.
Re:Where is all the new, good software? on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @11:18PM (#50081973)
Yes, but not in the exact, specific, bespoke way that people need it.
Re:Where is all the new, good software? on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @11:15PM (#50081959)
I'm pretty ambivalent about AI, but...

Even if some bloated, expensive software that may have contained those functions already exists, bespoke software that does exactly what I want, and only what I want, in the way I want, is still "new" in my opinion.

I liked when it happened to Adobe, but I don't like this.

Me too. What a funny way to express it!

The most important number for FIRE is saving percentage, not income.

And then raised the prices of them because why the hell not.

Their consumer dementia field is certainly working well, if that's what you think.
Re:Meta and Microsoft Limit Employee Use of Claude AI Tools on Thursday October 08, 2026 @12:46AM (#50001878)
https://www.youtube.com/ModernVintageGamer has some great videos about emulation and he's been talking about AI recompilations quite a bit lately.
Re:Account bans on Reddit on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @01:18AM (#49988535)
After being banned on reddit now a few times for doing nothing but stating an opinion contrary to the hive mind, I just don't post any more now.

Every time I think about posting, I think again.

Let it die like stackoverflow. AI won.

Or you could just use notepad.

'No Way to Prevent This,' Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens

> In 1 minute it comprehends a complex niche code base and points out subtle errors with very little noise. A senior engineer we would have taken months to do less.

They of course operate faster than humans, but this is hyperbole. Unless your senior engineer sucks.

Re:Pirating the Pirates on Friday October 02, 2026 @12:23AM (#49929826)
Dawson's Creek had iconic music, but as far as I can tell, the series with the original music is unobtainium. Afaict the pirates can't even get it.
I only see downvote sometimes, for some reason. I don't see it available on the comments on this post.
Also, if the govt steps in, the AI companies can declare force majeure so they can kick the can down the road a bit longer.

Oracle is the canary.

Nobody makes their flight.
Re:Hacking SimCity 2000 saved games on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @08:32PM (#49916274)
My first ever "hack" was for Strip Poker on the C64.

When I looked on the disk, I saw that the pictures were listed as, eg LADY01 up to LADY05.

11 year old me was pretty excited when I thought, "what would happen if I renamed the files?"...

Re:New PlayStation 5 Console Jailbreak Released on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @02:07AM (#49905004)
That just seems weird to me? PS5s are expensive.

Those BC250 are 1/3 the price. Or is that just because they're old?
