Re:An Interview with the Creator of Ruby (2001) on Thursday October 12, 2017 @10:55AM (#15458407)
Along with what other people already responded, I think they're also pretty focused on the Ruby 3x3 project (making Ruby version 3 be three times faster), which may be slowing down the general heap of new features Rubyists were used to.

No lie, this was a fantastic way to start my day.

I'll look those two up - thanks for the tip!

I believe it's a free stock photo site.

I've been thinking about this sort of thing for a couple of months now. I really like the idea of an open-source social network, maybe supported in part or in full by crowdfunding via something like Patreon. If the intention is connection rather than profit, you'd mostly just need to cover server/hosting fees. Of course, that's still not a cheap proposition.

But I'd rather have a small network focused on good connections than a large network focused on invading and selling user data, and maybe a smaller network could be managed by user contributions over investments that lead to treating users as the product.

That's a good pull quote to keep up your sleeve: Facebook is the McDonald's of the internet. It's unhealthy and kinda crap but everybody consumes it, and the ones who don't seem stuck up for some reason.
Re:W3C abandons consensus, standardizes DRM, EFF resigns on Tuesday September 19, 2017 @10:43AM (#15285055)
I agree. I'm curious as to what percentage of Netflix users primarily stream through a web browser rather than an app. I know my personal experience amounts to basically nothing but I can't even remember the last time I watched something on Netflix through a browser. I just have a hard time imagining that a lack of Netflix would kill Firefox.
Re:Gmail, Google Maps and YouTube had outage issues on Tuesday September 12, 2017 @12:37PM (#15228771)
Gmail and YouTube are working fine in NC. Maybe they're getting things sorted out now.
Re:Teaching my 10-year-old daughter to program on Tuesday September 05, 2017 @09:43AM (#15175009)
This is really cool. I tried introducing my 7 year old daughter to programming over the weekend and, while she was interested in being able to make things, I had a hard time keeping her attention (which is probably a reflection more on my lack of teaching ability). Maybe I'll give her a few more years and try again.
Re:Ask HN: Is AI threat overblown? on Monday September 04, 2017 @07:37PM (#15171513)
There's an AI researcher named Robert Miles [1] whose videos I really enjoy. He brought up a good point about this issue in one of his videos a little while back. To use it here, Elon Musk, Putin, and Mark Zuckerberg all have something in common: none of them are AI specialists or researchers. Another way to think of it is this: don't ask your dentist about your heart disease.

Miles does point out very real issues/questions in AI safety – that's what most of his content is focused on. His point, which is a good one to make, is that the sort of fear mongering spread by non-AI specialists draws attention away from these very real issues that need to be addressed.

[1] His channel can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLB7AzTwc6VFZrBsO2ucBMg He's also done a few videos for Computerphile.
