FWIW Epic is also privately owned.
Not to mention, you still get to leverage all of the benefits of Steamworks.

I was surprised at how many shots that I thought were terrible CGI were in fact practical effects.

There's a similar large scale (~200 acres) model of the Mississippi River Basin https://friendsofmrbm.org/
Long time ago, while running cat5 in a large open ceiling, I stepped off of a large metal beam onto what I thought was the concrete ceiling of an outdoor awning, but was in fact droptile. Fell right through, of course, and landed more-or-less on my back. The floor was that hard institutional carpet.

I don't remember anything about the fall itself. After hitting the floor I immediately got to my feet, realized the breath had been knocked out of me, tried to call my partner's name, then sat back down. I think the pain came shortly after that.

Reminds me of a short story by Alastair Reynolds, "Glacial". In it, scientists are studying these worm-like alien creatures that seem to interact with one another via chemical markers left on the tunnel walls. It is theorized that they're acting as a sort of distributed intelligence, although it's really slow due to the extremely low metabolism.

I remember listening to some NPR segment where a doctor/researcher said the first couple years is like a long acid trip. He was being somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but it resonated with me.
Now I’m imagining a Costco acropolis. One membership for literally all your needs. Never leave Costco
Re:A Suprising Discovery Inside the Steam Deck's APU on Monday January 15, 2024 @11:57AM (#39002998)
Not OP, but the buttons are a bit mushy, the shell a bit creaky and, worst of all, the the Steam and Quick Access buttons feel terrible. It's all much more apparent when I pick up my Switch Lite, which itself isn't something I'd consider high build quality. That said, I'm ok with the compromises considering the price point.

Or put another way, they’re both deconstructing a genre

I grew up in Madison/Ridgeland, Ms, where I did experience this. To some extent, at least. I had neighborhood friends. We rode bikes, crossed the tracks to go to the comic book store, etc.

Still, I’ve always romanticized the big city. Never lived it, though, so maybe it’s a grass-is-greener thing, but maybe I’ll be able to give it a whirl someday.

I was recently back in Oxford and wound up chatting over beers with someone who worked with SFA. Despite living there for 8 years, I’d never heard of it before.
Paul Thomas Anderson?
Years ago, my wife and I were in Rome and blindly walked into some restaurant with “taverna” in the name. We were thinking of Greece and just assumed ~$$.

Boy were we wrong. When we opened the menu we saw quail eggs with white truffles from Alba for like 1300 euros!

Dude. So happy to see you get posted here. I was following you for a while on Reddit, but don’t know why I stopped.

Anyways, I love this project.

I do like the show, for the most part, but I’m really bothered by the color palette, which isn’t something if often pay much attention too. It’s just so desaturated and drab. Maybe they’re trying to go for some alien atmospherics vibe or something, idk.
He is mainstream media to the extent of the mainstream media's obsession with covering him.

I think post has what you need.

I think I’m in the same boat as you.

I know enough to be dangerous. That is, I’ve started many tutorials, and know enough to debug the software I deal with at work (I’m an escalations engineer), but I struggle with advancing towards comfortably writing my own code.

So this particular style of teaching (talking about Parent’s comment) really appeals to me. For example, I totally see why “How To Learn Python the Hard Way” is recommended, but building up from math operations just doesn’t work for me. I understand why it works for certain people, but it’s too abstract for me.

Parent’s app, however, shows an example, and then explains plainly what each part does. This style of explaining moves me closer towards the “Learn Python the Hard Way” method.

The hype over dark meat has become a meme.

I know Americans slept on dark meat for a while, and perhaps many still do, but in a certain slice of the foodie subculture (recipe bloggers, YouTube foodies, etc) this idea that dark meat is ALWAYS better than white meat has become this truism that, it seems to me at least, people like to slip in to signal how cultured they are or something.

Personally, it just depends on the dish and what kind of mood I’m in.

For example, if I’m wanting to make a pan sauce I’ll almost always go with white meat (usually bone-in split breast).

Chicken parm? White meat, please

For me, because dark meat itself is fattier and more flavorful by default, I find it can take over in many dishes where the meat is more of a vehicle for something else.

Stir frys, however - I almost always opt for dark meat.

Curries? It depends.

This seems at least superficially similar to Roger Penrose's Conformal Cyclic Cosmology theory.

Anyone here able to weigh in on that?

My wife is a high school teacher and, until we had our first child, was also the swim team coach.

Early last year she made a kid run laps after he low key photo-bombed the team picture by making the "Ok" symbol on one of his thighs.

Then she gets an angry text message from the kid's mother who believed her son was being punished specifically for making the "ok" symbol. This woman had found a picture of my wife on Facebook where she can be seen pulling her shirt down by pinching the bottom of it between her thumb and pointer finger, inadvertently making the "ok" symbol. She basically said she was going to put my wife on blast and out her as a racist. Ridiculous (Hilarious, even, in retrospect).

My wife didn't respond, of course. She immediately looped in her admin and explained what was going on. Fortunately that was the end of it, but it's not hard to imagine someone getting caught up in a similar situation and it becoming a full on witch hunt.

Memory bandwidth is a big limitation with the older i5/i7s, at least when trying to pair them with anything beyond say a gtx 970.

My wife and I argue [playfully, but still] about who gets to make a grocery run.

I'm the introverted one, so under normal circumstances I take any chance I get to stay at home. But I do get a certain kind of energy just from being around people in public, which is why I like grocery shopping.
