Ethereum is building out a p2p messaging system called Whisper: https://github.com/ethereum/wiki/wiki/Whisper

This doesn't use the ether gas as payment, but a PoW to encrypt the message locally then sent.

Ethereum's data store will come from Swarm: https://github.com/ethersphere/swarm

With these two additional pieces it is trivial to build and conduct a social network on ethereum's blockchain.

Hey Hacker News! Myself and three others are on the SecretSet team, let me know if you have any questions about our process and specifically things we did to get it built and off the ground. Hope you liked the read!

Did you make this? It is very engaging from the start.
I would really like feedback on the landing page, market opportunity for this application, and how useful this would actually be. Any other feedback is most welcome as well, Thanks!

Re:Facebook Acquires Daytum (Ryan Case and Nicholas Felton) on Wednesday April 27, 2011 @02:20PM (#2490487)
It be awesome to get Daytum stylized info graphs on all my FB data! I am really excited for this acquisition!

Anyone else have ideas on what else they could be using Daytum for?

Build and ship code. Get feedback, build and ship code. Rinse and repeat until something sticks.

Any time spent reviewing your idea and building even a one page "Business Model Canvas" is time wasted. Most likely the idea you initially had will not be the one that ends up working out for yea.

I feel like this article is a list of best practices for pretending to be an entrepreneur.

I like this as an alternative, "You've got an idea for a startup, now what? JUST DO IT!"

Re:We mistakenly marked about 50 applications as late on Friday April 08, 2011 @05:12PM (#2425627)
Awesome! Was worried for a bit ;)
Have you looked into how Grooveshark streams songs? I am only pushing this because I would love a playlist I can build as I think up or find songs and then can playback at some later time. I am always forgetting songs I want to listen to when I get home.
This is something I have been waiting for! Simple and actually useful. I was skeptical at first, but being able to build a list then later listen to the song is great!

Besides cleaning up the site and making it look pretty, the MVP is very well executed. What are your plans for monetization?

Also any thoughts on building in a playlist feature to run through my entire list of songs? How about sending songs to my contacts to-do list?

Good job though!

Re:The audacity of charging from day one. on Thursday March 31, 2011 @03:51PM (#2393330)
Good point for startups who have value to offer day one, but some startups do not add value until a certain level of activity is reached or a certain state of stability is reached, take Twitter for example.

However, I believe they have reached a point that it should start to charge. Those who see it as a value have spoken up about wanting and willing to pay.

Ask HN: What is the best way to find developer talent in my city?

I am looking to find/hire another developer and I have never had to look for or hire anybody before. What is the best way to go about this? What are the best resources?Specifically, I am located in Austin, Texas. Also if there are any HN'ers in the area that are interested in meeting with me, I am looking for a front-end developer with emphasis on mobile web app development and a knack for design...

Color.com should have been called Around.me

Around.me is a mobile app for viewing videos and pictures at a specific location.Pictures and videos are only viewable where they were captured. No social network, no followers, no friends, and no check-ins. Just capture the moment and leave it for another person to find.Fire up the app at a new location and see if any moments have been captured there before. I believe it would work great for...

Hopefully he can bring a working monetization model with him.
Re:How to evaluate a non-technical co-founder on Monday March 28, 2011 @12:01PM (#2378828)
Being a biz founder I picked up technical skills and built a crappy (MVP of MVP's) prototype to pitch to tech founders. If the non-tech founder can't even learn enough code to get anything built then I would be concerned for their level of dedication for their own idea.

Even though my prototype was terrible and even made the other founders laugh, they could see my level of dedication and my ability to get something done.

To me being a biz founder we need to be the scapegoat of the startup, no pride all humility and can sell the shit out of anything.

Re:Artsicle is hiring art-minded developers on Monday March 28, 2011 @11:51AM (#2378791)
Art-minded developers, developers that like art? or design-minded developers, developers with a sense of aesthetics and design?
Reach out locally and find a mentor. He/She could provide you with a tremendous amount of help and guidance. Perhaps even offer to fund your projects.
