Thiel's dream
When you mean 'I am X' you mean 'I earn a living as a X'. Nothing stops from being X in your free time. The tension is that X has a diminishing number of similarly paid alternatives. As a programmer, you have likely automated many beloved jobs away before while you happily typed away. The difference is that now, automation isn't offering alternatives to the jobs destroyed.
You got it wrong. In AI era, the trade-off is between CVE and vulnerabilities that people haven't noticed yet. In the AI era, the forest is ALWAYS on fire. Even when you don't see the smoke.
Also many emails from tech companies today:
- "sign in via one-time code."
- "Click here to see our latest update".
"On a device using an eSIM, where the SIM can't simply be moved to another handset, recovery would be significantly harder, and for a non-technical user, effectively out of reach."
eSims are great until they are not. Give me a second physical SIM tray over an eSim any day of the week.
You seem to be looking for excuses to buy from them. You have a choice.
Each of the attackers are doing a one off attack at different times. They can increase or slow their attacks easily. For Apple, it is a constant never-ending battle. You are fighting an infinite wave of opponents.
LLMs have become the software equivalent of using a hammer to solve all your problems. Like others have said, there are much better solutions to provide an enhanced search engine for your survival knowledge.
> people still need to pay bills, cogs or not.
You don't need to work at Microsoft to pay your bills. That is the point.
And the worst thing is that, when Microsoft turns around and begins recruiting again, people will just forget this and accept the golden handcuffs once more. Techies aren't as smart as they think they are. They are just a slightly more expensive cog. But a cog nonetheless. And all cogs can be replaced.
> What do people do that triggers refusals?
It is very obvious. Look at the sort of things main models refuse to do and you will find what people are seeking to do. Mostly falls into 3 camps: illegal stuff, unethical stuff and shady/dodgy stuff.
Yes, a good chair is also still very expensive. But most people go to Ikea. That has repercussions for your chair making business.
In the era of LLMs, the value of code is very low. I don't think most people, especially here, can justify $30 per month. It's more expensive than a Claude Pro sub.
LLMs aren't just boilerplate fillers anymore though. That's the whole point. A business does not care about your enjoyment. It cares about value delivered asap. Sometimes it means you get to think about problems and solutions more and other times it means you think about it less. Arguably, you will overall spend more time talking to an LLM than in the headspace of creative problem solving. This has been a common talking point in HN for a while.
I loved Momo! Fantastic book
It seems like the industry is on a quest to see what's the maximum price that people will pay for convenience
With Sony's scheming and this, the high-end console industry is killing itself.
> There is inequality because they have more super rich people
Not quite, they also have more poor people to a scale that doesn't exist in many countries in Europe.
A consequence of having more poor people: strain on the healthcare and justice systems (relatively more acutely ill people, relatively more people committing crime) and bad educational outcomes (poor people tend to score lower).
A consequence of having more rich people: democratic processes are regularly under pressure due to the influence of rich people trying to make more favourable processes. Government institutions getting swayed by money from these rich people in exchange for preferable treatment.
> realising he will have far better opportunities in the US or China than here, where everything is blocked, taxed and regulated to maintain the status quo.
Those two countries have far worse inequality than most countries in Europe. So yes, he might have better opportunities in US and China, but that's because he was born in Europe and will be in a better position to choose his future than if he had been born in a country where the inequality level meant he could not access the opportunities available in that country. You need to think about why those countries have better opportunities in the first place. They paid a price for that.
If people knew what they were doing jQuery, Angular and React would not have existed in the first place. With devs moving companies every two years or so, being able to hit the ground running was very important and you couldn't afford to spend weeks or months learning the idiosyncrasies of your new codebase especially when it came to state management. That's the main problem frameworks and libraries were solving.
Why would someone use you rather than using a product from a frontier lab? Surely, you can't be cheaper than them unless your model is an open-source model? Anthropic already offers the equivalent of a cron job and app building tools (along with state management).
I agree. The problem here is that these people are tackling symptoms rather than causes and tackling symptoms alone while the cause exists over a long period of time will produce new issues that come with their own symptoms. Then users tackle these new symptoms and the cycle begins anew.
Weird. Surely, Wordpress sites are easier targets? Why Magento I wonder? Isn't Shopify more popular?
> folks used to focus on how automation would first come for blue collar work
Developers are guilty of hubris and they are getting slapped back to reality.
> if you ask your agent to do something like this (or pretty much anytime you give it internet access and say "do whatever it takes"), you are responsible for what it does.
Clearly not, given that the frontier labs have gotten away with unathorized access to a bunch of sites including some from the Pentagon.
> Maybe they want cheaper developers?
This. I imagine they are showcasing a template to hire a new breed of cheap highly replaceable/fireable devs.
They have not caused damage?
You forget the people who have unalived themselves because some LLM told them to do so.
> Of course you have to pay
Have these labs pay ANYTHING?
> They need to be sued, the laws are already there.
Have you seen Lord of War? They never will.
