It used to be true, but this changed many years ago.
He is one of two friends to have passed from DKA. Miss you, Zach. RIP.
Miss pwning with you.
If you’re talking about a place to mature, around others who are at a similar phase of life, also yes.
It is where most people meet their cofounders, for example, even if they don’t found anything until much later.
Thus, you build reputation by acquiring karma.
It isn’t perfect, but the fact that folks with higher karma can “fix” the emotional flags of folks with lower karma, it helps.
Also, I’d recommend re-reading the guidelines: https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html
There are a lot of sheriffs.
HN is actually surprisingly good about this, so I disagree with your assertion.
Lower the dose (with your doctor, of course). For me, the “middle” dose was the sweet spot of positive effects with minimal side effects.
You are likely a “hyper-responder” to GLP-1s.
Also, tirzepatide had far fewer side effects for me, fwiw.
YMMV, of course.
I didn’t say that. But when he’s right, he’s right.
> Think you could beat it in a specialized version of "business strategy jeopardy?"
> It would crush you. Thinking you know more about "business strategy" is laughable. What sort of guru are you? Let's see the great business strategy you've implemented.
This is no longer a productive conversation. I never said I would make a better consultant than an LLM. I said that consultants are useless without context, as are LLMs.
They are tools, not a panacea.
Have a lovely rest of your week.
Writing well is not easy. PG has written many essays about this very topic.
LLMs do not write well.
> Strategic thinking? The LLM has more context than you. Sure, you know more about your company, but AI knows more about the rest.
This is a mistake, and untrue. The LLM has more general knowledge, yes. But it’s the specific knowledge (aka “context”) that makes all the difference. It’s the same reason management consultants are, by and large, useless; they aren’t dumb, but they lack context.
So no, the LLM doesn’t have more context than you. In fact, its context window is literally limited. You have decades of experience and knowledge and patterns you’ve matched, and the LLM has none of that.
Do not fool yourself into thinking it has more context than you. It doesn’t. It has more knowledge. Those are very different.
(Incidentally, the same is true of humans; the most knowledgeable ones are not always the ones making discoveries or changing the world. Often, it is specific context that matters more, as the application of a solution to a problem requires seeing the right problem. LLMs are a solution engine, but they have no metric for what is a “right problem”)
LLMs provide you with the illusion of “free concurrency,” and it sucks people in.
(That is also an unproven statement, obviously, but that’s what I’d want to study/test)
I have not found myself less productive than my peers, but I have found myself less scattered across a bunch of different things. I do not think this is worse.
Also, consider reading about and/or getting tested for ADHD. You may not have it, of course, but I was diagnosed at 33 and it changed my life. Not because of medication (though I did that for about a year and a half, with success) but for a dozen other reasons, including being able to accept parts of myself rather than fight them, recognize (and reinforce) the coping mechanisms I’d built, recognize the ways in which it made me literally better than other people at certain things (some refer to ADHD being a “superpower” which it can definitely feel like at times), etc.
If you haven’t read Mark Suster’s posts about his experience with ADHD, read them - there are 3. If it resonates, consider talking to someone.
My email is in my profile; I’m happy to chat if you ever want. :)
Now I want to do a study!
I wonder if the extremely fast dopamine hits of LLM use trigger the same sort of dopaminergic response that ADHD does when faced with a stimulus? If so, are we simply better at dealing with those swings, since we’ve literally dealt with them our entire lives?
That was my read, anyway.
That is, stepping away from the laptop is what has given them back some free time and brain space.
Just because you can doesn’t mean you must, even if everyone else is.
