For a moment there, I thought I was reading The Onion.

I thought this was a pretty common thing.

It's a bit of of a movie/TV trope, especially after a character dies--the widow would try to preserve the scent of their spouse/lover via clothing, pillow, etc.

I think the srt file needs to have the same name as the main video file and they both need to be in the same folder.
Re:A Car Dealers Won’t Sell: It’s Electric on Tuesday November 24, 2015 @02:30PM (#10622990)
I would have never imagined that salespeople deter customers from buying electric cars. But I think this could be used as a great selling point: The cars are so low maintenance make less money on more expensive vehicles.

Also, this situation is yet another reason why companies like Tesla need to be able to sell direct-to-consumers.

Again, how is it different than StartupLister or some CSS gallery submission service?

Those sites aren't selling links and neither am I. We're just filling out submission forms that need to be reviewed and rejected or accepted. And most of those sites use nofollow or obfuscated links and that's fine. The goal is to have BetaList--or whatever--showcase your site...not game Google.

So why is my site getting chewed out, but StartupLister (and others like it) is celebrated as a wonderful resource by HN and Reddit users (hence my footnotes)?

I honestly don't understand why people are struggling with this. I keep asking simple questions and I get answers that completely disregard everything I've said.

This will be my last comment on the matter.

Also, just to clarify, you don't have to submit to a bunch of sites all at once, you create a custom list and submit a few at a time.

And most sites are nofollow anyway (or they obfuscate their URLs) so what difference does it make?

Okay, so why isn't StartupLister sleazy for doing the same thing?

Ask HN: Why does Reddit hate my startup while loving HN favs like StartupLister?

I have basically created a directory of sites that accept link submission. It's called The Submit List. I also offer manual link submission services much like StartupLister, PromoteHour, etc.Rather, writing yet another listicle, I wanted to create a resource with granular search classifications, that's continually updated over time. Those sites have been celebrated by the tech media. So I...

It's not nitpicking when correcting a meaningful mistake.

Yet, the author specific said, in his experience, that level of personalization made little difference.

If the author is reading this, you should know that your post was very lucid and engaging. Much better than most of stuff posted on Tumblr.

You seems very capable and determined, you should consider freelancing. Please keep us posted on your progress.

Re:The Uber-ization of porn on Thursday August 27, 2015 @11:00PM (#10133531)
With porn you get to choose/approve your partner based on attractiveness and compatibility. Whereas prostitution involves total strangers... and they are not really in a position where they get to say "no" (even though "technically" they can).

Is Chloe Sevingy a prostitute because she had REAL sex in the movie, The Brown Bunny? I'd say no.

That run-on sentence would have made my high school English teacher weep.
Re:Change Your Name on Sunday August 09, 2015 @07:16PM (#10031901)
Not everybody finances a startup with a mountain of cash. If you're funding your business with your life savings and credit cards, it's difficult to place a premium on a domain name while contemplating how long you can pay your mortgage and put food on the table.

Also, blind optimism is not required for success. And no domain name is an antidote for a shitty idea that nobody cares about.

Re:Change Your Name on Sunday August 09, 2015 @03:25PM (#10031246)
If the .com name you want is already registered, you can always buy it later once you business is successful enough to justify the investment (much like betali.st and getdropbox.com).

There's no point in buying an expensive domain name for a company that may not survive past the startup stage.

Note: a large swath of web users don't even understand the concept of a domain name or address bar...instead they google terms like "Gmail" and "YouTube" thinking this is how they are supposed to visit web sites.

What's more, tech-savvy users wouldn't think twice about visiting domain name ending in ".io", ".ly" and so on. (Hence their proliferation.)

I can't help but wonder if this article is some kind of prank--it's far too ill-considered compared to Graham's usual standards.

Ask HN: Are there still any design sites that showcase user-submitted links?

There was a time when a bunch of design-related web sites would have a "community news" section where they showcase user-submitted links.A lot of those sites no longer appear to accept submissions. But surely, there must be some sites that accept design-related links. Please share your suggestions.e.g. http://web.archive.org/web/20140404105522/http://submitquickly.com/ <-- This site used to...

I vaguely understand that workplace stress can be debilitating, but I don't have a clear understanding of this issue.

Would you mind shedding a bit of light on your story?

Yes, but eventually they'll make enough of their own content you wont care if they carry anyone else's stuff.

Hmm, that sounds intriguing. You might be on to something.

EDIT: The screen's backlight could be used to (partially) recharge its own battery.
