It reminds me how early Wayland compositors barely could ran on bare hardware and worked as X11 clients for testing purposes, hehe (many, like Weston or Cage, still can).

I also used SSTV Encoder from F-Droid on Android.

It's much more interesting if ran via an analog loop (at least an AUX cable connecting microphone and headphone jacks, or better an external microphone), it gives interesting noise effects.

AFAIR, I also experimented with recording it and then playing via https://github.com/bodqhrohro/taporwave, but don't remember if it was decoded well as header tones could be corrupted.

I definitely have results of converting raw video to raw audio via ffmpeg and then back, this approach is not sensitive to header pulses (but colour images are borked regardless of the mode).

`ffmpeg -y -t 5 -i /downloads/video/webm/414827e0-9583-407f-9940-3840b7b1085f.webm -f rawvideo -s 176x144 /dev/stdout|ffmpeg -y -f u8 -ar 8000 -i /dev/stdin -f ogg /dev/stdout|ffmpeg -y -f ogg -i /dev/stdin -f u8 -ar 8000 /dev/stdout|ffmpeg -y -f rawvideo -s 176x144 -i /dev/stdin /tmp/swine.mp4` : https://0x0.st/HvAM.mp4

Hmm, I glanced through the collection of Bach's MIDIs and couldn't spot anything like that. Will listen to it completely, maybe it's in the middle of some symphony.

Thanks a lot anyway, adding to the OP^[4^W too late.

Ask HN: What tunes does this doorbell play?

Welcome back to the world of early 00s monophonic cellphones :)Circa a half of the tunes were recognized already, but the rest remains a miracle.https://0x0.st/-gNY.oggI believe, all of them are royalty-free already: classic, old musicals, folk, campfire & nursery songs and so.· 00:02 — Big Ben· 00:10 — für Elise· 00:17 — "Please, open the door"· 00:23 — Minuet in G Major· 00:35 — Cancan·...

Re:Ask HN: Is there a real alternative to Android/iOS? on Wednesday August 18, 2021 @12:07PM (#28223252)
Nope, though I communicated a lot with the Ukrainian hacker who started the project and the whole bananahackers community.

My primary phone is from 00s, running a proprietary ENEA OSE operating system, and I have no reason to change it. Though if I'll have to, I'll consider something KaiOS-based or Android-based with a keypad, like Nokia 800 Tough, Discovery A17 or Snopow M2. Ideally with a GNU/Linux port available, bananahackers are digging into this direction too.

Why wouldn't you just make an old school website that renders all the stuff on the server and is mobile frindly the same time?

If you really strive for an "app" experience, wrap it in a WebView or look at the PWA approach.

GerdaOS for the way.
