I haven't because of lack of exposure so far but since you are using it daily, it would be good to know how you are using it as it may interest others.

HN responses are top quality and sometimes the comments offer more than the original submission. I am sure you would have some threads or particular individual comments saved up somewhere or favorited.Sometimes those comments teach you something or recommend something that helped you or they were just very interesting. Work wise, it will be a slow week with Thanksgiving around the corner (Happy...

Any concepts, videos, articles, books, movies, business that opened up a whole new world for you - something that you didn't know earlier or knew little of but then had this WOW / Ah-ha moment for you.
1. That sleeping over uncomfortable pending decisions and discussions helps a lot.
2. That a fixed sleeping schedule with at least 8 hours of sleep does wonders to my thought process and has a calming effect.
3. That my thoughts, especially under tough circumstances, are not really a true picture of reality. This one is tough and is still under discovery mode.
4. That I should never compare myself with others. The only thing I should rely on others should be for inspiration. The comparison part I knew my whole life but, like all simple things, it took a while for me to actually immerse in the depth of it.

In the "How do you read" Ask HN thread from a couple of days ago, there were quite a few mentions on the lines of "Great books should be re-read again and again". Thought it'd be great to know what those books are for everyone. Something that you have read more than once and would likely read again.
What has helped me is talking in person to someone who is close. Realized that sometimes I just need to vent my inner confusion and at other times I need them to shake me because I am living too much in my head.
Over time, I realized that this situation occurs because there's something that I must/need to do but I am procrastinating. That surfaces as anxiety and my mind ends up "translating" it into a spiritual discussion - all in my head - with questions like "is this life", "is this all"?
Expectations of self can be hard and confusing.
I did the same until I read your comment! Thank you. Learning never stops.

Are there any products or services that you are paying for and are not happy with but either have no other choice or the alternatives don't work for you for some reason?

In some states, the validity of the Driver's License (DL) is aligned with the H1-B petition expiry date and I am in one of those states. My current petition expires in 4 months. Ideally my employer would have applied my H1-B extension under premium processing so that I am not without a valid DL but with this new rule, we'd have to go with regular processing and wait for the approved petition before I can get my DL extended meaning I'll be without a valid DL for some time which is a real pain. Ideally DMV should extend the DL based on the receipt for the petition but a lot of states, including the one where I am, don't do that.
Excellent book. The first time I started reading it, I couldn't grasp it and stopped after a few pages. But then picked it up again in 2015 and read it in one sitting. It's a wonderful little book. To be honest, I don't think I can sum up how it felt but it was liberating. I remember keeping the book on my chest and getting lost in thoughts about what the purpose of life is. It was really deep, I was on a totally different plane with my thought process. I read it again last year on a flight but couldn't finish it and it didn't evoke the same emotions but it has a very special place in my heart.

They did mention it's not the same thing this time.
"This is not the same problem we had with the CCD last year, which was a problem with the database caused by a software patch. This is a hardware failure, and we are working to restore system functions."
Just want to share my perspective as an Indian who was in US for 6 years until I came back to India a couple of months back. I am not sure why you think companies can bring folks from other countries (India in your example) at a meagre salary of $25K per year and that too in a managerial capacity. You are directly questioning the work that folks at USCIS do. I was in US on L1B initially, which is different from L1A that you are referring to, and then converted to H1B and I believe I was paid a fair market wage all along. I know there could be exceptions but don't think this can happen at a scale at which you are projecting. Also, I agree that the definition of management can be stretched but don't think the wage parity can escape the authorities.
This is a nice problem to have, so find some comfort in that. Personally, I have felt that in situations like these I usually know what's better but I just don't know it when I am confused and just keep thinking about the options. So how to get rid of the confusion? Sit down and relax and then WRITE IT DOWN. Make a table. You are looking for 2 things - What are you gaining and what are you missing out on - by working at Google and by doing your own startup. Think thoroughly and write everything down. Once you have laid down everything you can think of, leave the notes. Get back to them after a few hours or even the next day (Meanwhile you may keep thinking about some of the things you wrote, that's ok). Then review with a heavy focus on the 'what are you missing out on' column and TADA! If you are honest with yourself, you should have your answer. Wish you all the best with whichever option you go with. Don't forget to update the thread with your decision and why you went ahead with it. Who knows it may probably help someone down the line.
The article talks about inventing and not investing.
I don't understand why they would compare the average wage of all H1B workers spread throughout the US against that of a particular job title (Computer Systems Analyst) in Los Angeles CA. Wages obviously vary by job title and location. No surprises that wages in CA are higher.
I searched to see what Infosys (1) and TCS (2) actually pay a "Computer Systems Analyst" and found:
- For Infosys, there's only one result for Houston where the salary came out to be ~105K.
- For TCS, it's around 85K-87K for San Franscisco area. Didn't find anything for Los Angeles.
I can't vouch for the correctness of data but the site says they get it from the Department of Labor. Infosys and TCS would probably be using different job titles on their H1B petitions to try and get a lower wage determination.

Which startups are you closely following or are inspired by and why?For me it's Watsi because of what they are doing in healthcare in such a transparent way. An excerpt from their About page:While serving in the Peace Corps in Central America, a woman boarded a bus Chase was on and asked for donations to pay for her son's healthcare. She inspired him to start Watsi, and name it after the town...
I agree with your point about market saturation and should have touched upon it in my original comment when I quoted the sales drop. One point that stood out for me was that the Ipad was originally envisioned to be something bigger than what it is turning out to be. It's a great device for consumption but not so much for creation (obviously there are exceptions). For creating stuff, people still need to turn to laptops/desktops. If the creation aspect could be addressed by the Ipad, then it would be huge and I think that's what Apple will try to do with their next version of the Ipad. MS probably already understands this and therefore the focus on the Surface tablets. Obviously, there would still be a need for laptops/desktops but it would be more of an exception than a rule.
Appreciate the detailed explanation. It's very helpful. Since I hadn't done any customer validation, I guess I was just going by my own use case (married with 2 kids - group #1) as a reference. Now I understand and agree with you on #2 and #3. I really like what you are doing by working with agents and the idea of reaching out to local banks. Wish you all the best with Wrinq and the openresty book.
Wrinq is an interesting idea that even I had thought about earlier. I pay my rent using a personal check which the landlord then encashes at the bank. I will prefer to pay my rent online using a credit or debit card. But from a landlord's perspective, wouldn't it incur an additional processing fee if he/she were to start accepting a credit/debit card thereby reducing the net amount for him/her? The only way for it work for the landlord would be to increase the rent which I, as a tenant, will not like. I understand there's convenience but don't think it would justify a rent increase of 3% (average credit card processing fee) which can be a lot depending on where you are. How are you handling this problem? I know some landlords already have the option of paying by credit/debit card. It may work out in case of a new tenant but what about existing tenants? How does the landlord or you as a service provider justify the not-so-insignificant increase for them?

Side projects can be anything - Affiliate earnings, plugins, themes, e-books, SaaS products, ad sense based. How are you doing it? Is it ok on H1B?If you are comfortable, please share details about what you are doing.
Thanks. You didn't have any programming experience before starting with the Stanford course? If yes then that's pretty impressive. I understand, to some extent, the frustration around getting stuck and not having any guidance. Do you think the job market for iOS developers is still pretty hot or has stagnated now?
