We need more optimism in technology, more looking forward and inspiring the next generation to leave their mark; not pining for a past that’s already been here.
Nobody younger than an older millennial who grew up learning computers via Windows 95 has any interest in “retvrning” to this ethos of computing. Hell, I just described myself and even I could care less about this project other than a passing “huh that’s kinda neat” which is a rather tepid response proportional to the work that has been invested here.
There are far more interesting projects rethinking the OS right now that are actually trying their hand at unique architectures. This is just an homage to nostalgia (a technically impressive one, but still nothing inspiring here). The saddest part to me is I’m not sure the graybeards on HN will ever really get that.
Beeper is an app that unifies all the messaging protocols you mentioned (and others) into a single app. They are not introducing another protocol.
Universal in this context is referring to the ability to use a single app across protocols rather than the ability to use a single app across platforms.
Linus Tech Tips has one complete with an isolated private 5G network inside. I’m sure Google could manage.

An “about face” is a term commonly called in military cadence indicating the soldier should turn around, completing a 180 degree turn. So when used colloquially it means someone or some business had a complete change of mind on some topic. In this case, Microsoft has changed their approach to repairability.
Mastodon ain’t it because the exact minute a minimum wage Geek Squad tech has to explain to a sorority group the reason they can’t follow each other is because they are using different federated instances is the exact minute mastodon fails to gain any mainstream appeal. It will likely always captivate some niche of users looking for a slice of the nostalgic, techie internet (Mastodon will remain an HN darling no doubt), but a Twitter drop in, it is not.

Hello HN! I have a long background in tinkering with development, but I never really sat down to learn it in a way that could get me hired. Part of the issue is because while programming languages can be picked up quite easily by me, their tool chains and all the surrounding dev ops type work is not. I’m just looking for some guidance on where to focus time and energy and what development...
Surely a website advertising a “brand new look” would have a screenshot of the interface, right?
Am I missing something?
In my experience, the clubs cater to a niche. They’re effectively a kink in and of themselves and there’s a very explicit innuendo that sex is to be had on premise. Nude beaches on the other hand are a casual exploration of being clotheless. And while sexuality plays a part, it is not the focus of the experience and is often generally discouraged. I think nude beaches are cultural and thus more prone to the ebb and flow of said culture. Swingers clubs are a fetish and will exist regardless of culture as long as there are people with the kink.
Can someone here more up to date than I on the subject give me a good jumping off place to see the real research on vaping vs smoking nicotine?
Last I heard vaping was generally considered to be safer overall because it lacked the extra carcinogens found in cigarettes, but it came out in the wash as people tend to vape far more frequently than they used to smoke and vapes are also a more direct punch of nicotine.
I’ve heard that a pipe is probably the best way to smoke if you have to do it: Tends to have a more pleasant smell to those around you, is a much purer tobacco product, and it generally isn’t inhaled. I think pipes raise the rate of various mouth cancers though.
Would also recommend the follow up, 1493 for a comparison of how Columbus altered these cultures. Excellent books.
Cool looking project...have a beta I could try yet?
I think it’s usually better to accept someone’s words at face value than to attempt to infer deeper meaning. Ballmer has gone on to say that was one of his biggest mistakes and history agrees.
Regardless, there’s many examples of people throughout history finding no value in seemingly pointless technologies only to be proven wrong so I believe the point the quote still stands. I suppose I could always just link to the infamous Dropbox post here instead…
> I think he also overestimates its success. He pretty much sees everyone using it for work, gaming, friend interactions, etc. I just can't see it being so ubiquitous.

I was preparing to just manually rip shows and privately host my own RSS feed of the audio, but now I’ll be looking into this first. Thank you for exploring this problem in depth!

I don’t recall trying to disprove the point at all
> …down 30% from November…
And up over 300,000% over its lifetime…your point in measuring from November arbitrarily? This statement doesn’t seem like “genuine curiosity” to me and more like your mind has already been made up.
Read the article, then please tell me what this has to do with NFTs?
> Actually defund the police means exactly what it says.
…to you. Not everyone agrees and the simple fact that this discussion is taking place and you are defending this slogan would seem to render this purported clarity moot.
> On the other hand, maybe we're just so socioculturally fucked that it requires massive authoritarian investment to keep a crummy level of peace. I'm undecided.
This statement disturbs me. Please clarify.
AgelessRX will prescribe metformin [1], DHEA is legally OTC in the US, and any kind of HGH is probably readily available at your local gym (also a number of hormone doctors online will prescribe it easily)

From the article: “The balance is made up by the pretty-happies at around 57 percent, who I omitted from the chart because their numbers didn’t change from 2018 to 2021.”
> It seems to me that its become standard practice on marketing type blogs for corporate websites to remove the date from their posts.
Worse still, I’ve encountered sites that automatically update their edit dates to be current as a way to optimize SEO. I’ve found articles with decades old information claiming to have been written mere hours or days prior.
