Off topic but how are you using Bazel with Nix? Specifically with regards to Bazel's cache. It doesn't seem like that would work well with Nix.

I don't have eye strain but have great difficulty getting glasses that work for me. I have a -6 prescription and two out of my last three glasses have had horrible distortion around the edges.

This particular example is a bit misleading as those apps are still available; they're just unbundled from the system image: https://source.android.com/docs/automotive/unbundled_apps/re...

Incase you haven't run across it, I've found that enabling the "refine" option on the shape makes applying a fillet far more predictable.
Re:An infinite canvas for code exploration on Monday May 06, 2024 @10:37PM (#40281773)
By chance did you mean Sourcetrail [1] instead of Sourcegraph? Old demo video on YouTube: https://youtu.be/Cfu6f0uyzc8?si=oNS9KKlbgEk_Ct0p.

[1] https://github.com/CoatiSoftware/Sourcetrail

This is not correct. The main infotainment system is not considered safety critical. There are some functions such as rear view camera that are but often this is handled by a real time os that overlays the video on top of the infotainment output. The infotainment system crashing will not take down your steering or braking.
Re:Ask HN: Where to find open source house plans? on Wednesday August 23, 2023 @10:40AM (#37236750)
Several years ago the city of Phoenix released plans for a net zero single family home: https://www.phoenix.gov/sustainability/home

You do have to provide some basic info to get them but I can confirm that they're a full set of plans.

University of Michigan, 2012, a technical writing course was required (TCHNCLCM 300) and it's still required: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Vh83l2mW6j9P91eqV4W3UbqU...
jrockway mentions postgres in their comment:

One method I've known to work for people is to buy an Oculus. You need a Facebook account for it and Oculus tech support can reactivate your Facebook account. After that return the Oculus. This is the post where I first heard of this [1] and it worked for my brother-in-law. YMMV.

Ford's first iteration of their Sync infotainment system came out in 2007. What were they supposed to use before that?
The browser on the Zune wasn't good but I otherwise liked. What didn't you like about it?
Re:How to Launch (Again and Again) on Saturday February 11, 2023 @09:54AM (#34752802)
Probably any lens and any modern camera can achieve this quality and look. The soft background is achieved by using a lower f-stop. In this example the background isn't really too blurry though so you shouldn't need anything special.

You'll need to spend more time on lighting than anything else to reproduce the overall feel.

Re:Automating Heating with Home Assistant on Monday January 02, 2023 @03:04PM (#34222926)
You can get motorized dampers that you install where the branches come off the main trunk.

My understanding is it's not great to shut down vents all the way since it increases the static pressure in the branch and the air is just going to try to find ways out. You also have to be careful with closing down too many registers as it can cause too much pressure on the furnace. Some furnaces will shut down in this case.

They did say

So at least a significantly large portion are outside of Canada.

Re:Putting Ideas into Words on Saturday February 12, 2022 @02:35PM (#30315574)
He touches on that in the paragraph

> I'm not saying that writing is the best way to explore all ideas. If you have ideas about architecture, presumably the best way to explore them is to build actual buildings. What I'm saying is that however much you learn from exploring ideas in other ways, you'll still learn new things from writing about them.

Re:Why Carmakers Can’t Transition to Newer Chips on Saturday October 02, 2021 @10:04PM (#28733925)
If you don't allow for scope creep you won't get any contracts. What I've seen in the industry is most companies will under bid hoping to make it up in change request fees. The successful companies are the ones who manage the OEM such that they keep them happy while maximizing change requests. It's a fine line to walk.
Re:Show HN: A work-in-progress C compiler from scratch on Tuesday August 03, 2021 @11:57AM (#28050782)
This is specific to interpreters but the beginning part related to parsing and AST is common: http://craftinginterpreters.com/contents.html
If I read it right harry8 is referring to themselves as the Bozo.
There are lots of options:

- Yes, ctags/vim would work

- You could use something like vscode

- Consider checking out cscope. With cscope you can also build a reverse index which lets you find where things are called. It can be used with something like vim but also has a pretty nice TUI.

A bit old at this point but there was a really good talk at CppCon2014 about libcinder: https://youtu.be/ndUtK5IZslc
Re:In-car touchscreens are dangerous on Friday February 26, 2021 @07:37PM (#26281542)
The annoying one for me is the trunk ajar warning that doesn't time out. That means listening to a constant beep the entire way home from the hardware store when I have something that doesn't fit completely in the car.

> If you can choose what to work on, and you choose a project that's not the best one (or at least a good one) for you, then it's getting in the way of another project that is.

I get that this is true but for me personally I feel it's what holds me back the most in life. I rarely finish projects, not because I get bored with them but because I always think some other project would be a better use of my time.
