Funny you should put it like that. Now that actual pictures of the "digital clock" are available, that is first time I have seen a clock built into a metal suitcase that, golly gee, somewhat resembles a bomb.

Ya'll are being absurd. That kid new what he was doing, I did stupid shit like that when I his age...worse in fact, these days I would have made national headlines if I had been caught. So I know what I am talking about here.

He may be be a smart boy, but you put that briefcase in any Hollywood movie or video game and they would call it a bomb. If he was really building a clock it would at least somewhat really resemble a clock.

Bear in mind, I am a strong opponent of the rising police state and slow creep of tyranny that I hope is becoming obvious to even the more ignorant sections of the populace. But this...come on guys, call a spade a spade.

Do you have any good references for your statement about laser surveillance? Generally speaking, although the us government is a wallowing pile of inefficiency, it generally tends to be true that our military technology is a fair bit ahead of where it is thought to be. I didn't even know satellite laser surveillance was a thing, so I am genuinely curious here.
Re:Big Ideas That Don't Work in Education on Saturday August 15, 2015 @09:20PM (#10067583)
Exactly what I would have said. Most of my friends and family are teachers and the stupidity of ideas like "no child left behind"..."teach to the lowest common denominator"...are the kind of complaints I have been hearing about for quite some time.

Stop with the Orwellian political correctness and teach kids the level they are capable of. End of story.

Re:Did technology kill the book or give it new life? on Friday August 14, 2015 @10:36AM (#10060281)
Other than the occasional technical book, I refuse to buy e-books when reading for pleasure.

After spending all day in front of a screen, the last thing I want is another screen in my face when trying to relax with a good book at the end of the day.

Also re: worms, I've been fishing most of my life and other than some swampy places like Louisiana or some mucky looking rivers/lakes, worms have never been a problem?

Could be biased, I do most of my fishing in the Colorado rockies and have not had problems with worms there.

Trout makes pretty good sushi, plenty of that up there.
Re:Twitter’s stock falls toward IPO-level prices on Monday August 03, 2015 @02:45PM (#9998767)
Wasn't there some speculation that twitter itself had some bots auto-generating fake users, sending fake tweets, etc?

Even if they are not doing it, others certainly are for various reasons. I have always wondered what the true user count is.

"And Affordable Care Act or not, the annual tax penalty is far more affordable than buying health insurance."

Doesn't anyone else find this to be a concern? I wonder how prevalent this is?

I think that is most of it. Also, upper case was kind of like a virus back then. When you went to write your first page, looked around at what everyone else was doing, it was all caps so you did all caps.

Politically correct thoughtcrime / dissent = Downvote, I like it.

Not everyone agrees with your definition.
Re:Ask HN: What are you doing to improve your health? on Friday April 10, 2015 @11:49AM (#9355092)
Martial arts.

I have been practicing shaolin kung fu for 11 years, but I think most systems that incorporate a good 60 minutes of full body movement are going to do the trick. Surprised I am the first to post this as I have never found a more complete exercise system. Not to mention the internal aspects I have found to be extremely beneficial over the course of my life.

Yoga is pretty close, especially if you are doing ashtanga, brutal yoga!

Re:What the Deer Are Telling Us on Thursday April 09, 2015 @01:10PM (#9349136)
Pretty good documentary "The Private Life of Deer" that speaks towards deer overpopulation a bit:

Should be on Netflix as well.

You had a take PTO to leave early while working 60 hours in a week? That is absolutely ridiculous.

Re:Ask HN: Do you really need a degree? on Saturday March 21, 2015 @01:41AM (#9241962)
I decided to never go back.

I am 5 years into software development, 18 years in the tech industry overall. I have managed to get work at some great companies and have kept my salary close to or above 6 figures for much my career.

How? I worked my ass off. I cannot even really express the amount of time and effort I have put into my career. Especially once I switched gears and started software development full time. Even before that, I always put more time in my job than just about anyone else I knew. The downside is the effort has been detrimental to my health, I have hospitalized myself a few times due to the stress of working to much.

Should you get a degree? My opinion, based on what I have seen over the years, is that with a degree you do not need to work as hard to make as much. I am not implying that people with degrees do not work hard. Without a degree, you really need to bust your ass to make it to the upper salary ranges. Without a degree, many many doors will be closed to you, regardless of how skillful you may be with your craft.

If I had to do it over again, I would buckle down and get that degree. As much as I love what I do, and I truly do, the amount of time and effort it has take me to get this far, not to mention the health issues, it is just not something I would recommend for others.

On the other hand, if your are aspirations are a bit lower and you are just looking to make living...it is definitely possible to pursue this type of job without a degree and maybe even with a little less work than nuts like me.

"What if a massive truck comes careening down the road straight at you, and your only avenue of escape is through a playground full of children? What does the car do?"

We are going to let a computer make that decision? I don't think so.

Re:I barely graduated college, and that's okay on Thursday March 12, 2015 @02:07PM (#9192584)
You don't need a special degree or even college at all to be a successful coder, as long as you have a passion for it. At least that is what I walked away with.

Curious to know how many of you with children are going to use the time limit feature? I have a kid on the way and I have concerns about my child spending his formative years glued to youtube...
Great way to secure your future, denying reality.
It is a serious issue there, I would need to dig it up, but at one time one of the most crime infested blocks in all of Austin is just right around the corner from that place (north of 183, between Lamar and 35). Drive around some the surrounding neighborhoods, quickly becomes evident what state that part of town is in.
