My onsite interview with Google was very fair. It was an all-day event. The engies asked very tough questions and expected you to come up with the answer in about 30 minutes (45 minutes max but you need time to ask/interact).
I didn't make it. But I don't feel their engies are assholes (well may be a couple in my 5 interviews). I have a feeling like they don't care how you interact/approach to solve the issue. If you cannot solve it you fail! There is no partial credit whatsoever. This could turn out to be great if you have canned solutions.
Thanks for you thorough answer. Like you said I definitely wouldn't rent a shady place for a cheaper price. Most of my co-workers are from New Jerseys so I could look around in NJ too. In "Fresh Direct and your local wash-and-fold" do you mean out source the laundry? Thanks again
I'll be working pretty close to the Financial district. I wouldn't expect my pregnant wife to work anytime soon though. It could be tough I know. But I hope I could get more network with great entrepreneur minds in NYC. Cheers

I have a phone interview with Google about one month from now. They ask me to refresh my basic data structure and algorithm. Does anybody have any Google interview experience? Do you guys have any recommended reading sources for this? Thanks
I want a Macbook Pro (not McBook Pro) 15 in, 2.8Ghz, with 8GB RAM, Geforce 330GT 512 GDDR3 RAM and 500GB SSD HHD. It ouwld cost only about 4000 including Apple-tax
Stop whining about not able to work remotely. If you can work remotely why don't you just go to India and work from there?
Same here (south Texas), been working for 7 years, expertise in both java and .net but making mid 70k. I feel underpaid and thinking about jumping ship too.
Hey are you the guy who just moved to SF from Atlanta and wrote a blog post about it? I like your post!
Sad but interesting comment. I remember seeing a post in HN awhile ago with a title "If you're a programmer, you're sitting on a goldmine."
Thanks I make sure will ask in my next review
So for someone has 10 years in C/C++ and 5 in Java, 3 in .NET you can't really tell them that they don't have deep experience in Java or .NET. They could just have 15 years in C/C++ plus 5 in Java and 3 in .NET for the total of 15 years of their development career. They have exposed to a wide range of technologies required to do their jobs.
What I mean is while doing Java for most my development career I am also doing .NET for production project! It's not like I do Java for 4 years then stop and develop .NET solely for 3 years.
Sorry I missed it. I've been working as programmer since 2003 in my 20s.
About jumping tech I'm not really jumping around either. I really like both Java and .NET development. I've led numerous java server side projects. I could safely assume I'm above average in my java skillset.

Hi,
I've been working for this company almost 4 years. Starting pay was 70K. I got raises a twice (about 2-2.5% each) so now I am at about 75K. I've been doing java for server side most my life. I've been also coding/leading .NET for thick client app for about 3 years (Office plugin and WinForm mostly). Always get the jobs done and hear good praises from management but I feel like the pay...

Hi,
I have been in enterprise development with Java for 5 years. I consider myself senior (in my skill that is, not just number of years I put in). I'm still very interested in writing code and designing software. I have great review from the management. But I have a feeling like if I just keep doing what I'm doing now (for a very big investment firm, non-trading activities) I could never earn...
