Re:Show HN: I added autopilot to the lunar lander game on Friday March 10, 2023 @09:02AM (#35094385)
Really cool! The fact that astronauts handled the landing in the Apollo missions is nerve wracking
Re:One Does Not Simply 'pip install' on Sunday February 19, 2023 @10:45PM (#34864714)
Poetry is pretty much the way to go.
Re:The technology behind GitHub’s new code search on Monday February 06, 2023 @02:08PM (#34682434)
When can we have a usable search in GitLab?
This is exactly why secrets should not be stashed in any Git repository. Granted, I'm not sure they're much safer in other managed services dedicated to protecting our secrets, with the news of several breaches as of late :/
Re:The case for dynamic, functional programming on Wednesday November 23, 2022 @12:12PM (#33721817)
Wait where is self.count set, and is it 0 or 1?
Re:Migrate Your Gitlab Instance on Thursday October 06, 2022 @11:11AM (#33109231)
GitLab migrations seem to be hard to pull off and rather time-consuming, but I found this tool automated and transferred my organization from GitLab.com to my self-hosted instance rather seamlessly. What have others used?

Same in Boston, MA, US
Re:Ask HN: Google Search down? on Monday August 08, 2022 @09:37PM (#32393236)
Was just about to post this, I'm seeing issues.
Re:My business card runs Linux on Wednesday July 13, 2022 @11:19AM (#32083907)
Very creative and original, but I don't think I want to plug any complete machine into mine, let alone over USB haha. This is sort of like passing out flash drives, and plugging it in hoping there's no malicious content.
Re:Space Math on Monday April 18, 2022 @10:23AM (#31071032)
This reads like a code style guide, but for math. E.g., like https://google.github.io/styleguide/pyguide.html
Re:Elevator.js (2015) on Thursday February 24, 2022 @02:58PM (#30459467)
This is awesome haha
Re:Tesla is outrunning the supply chain crunch on Thursday October 21, 2021 @01:53PM (#28948330)
Thanks for providing this context, good to know.
This is probably the most toxic thread I've read on this site in a long time. Like wow.
Well-said. This ... makes me want to leave this HN story altogether.
Re:Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index on Wednesday February 10, 2021 @08:39AM (#26088822)
Does anyone have any figures on what regular banking systems use for accepted/official currencies? I feel like this has blown up so much that it makes sense to compare and contrast.
Re:Dutch brewery burns iron as a clean, recyclable fuel on Thursday November 05, 2020 @06:32AM (#24997346)
I don't know how this would scale. Like, you can't deliver iron filings/powder efficiently via pipes, can you? Certainly not via existing infrastructure. Clogs would probably be certain.
Re:Mathematicians should stop naming things after each other on Saturday September 05, 2020 @07:16PM (#24387613)
Ugh I feel both sides.
Lol this is exactly the reason I bought a surfboard the first month I moved in, and it's already paid for itself (and it's very easy to configure - a phone call to their support, read 'em a barcode, and you're ready to go).
Re:The Disneyfication of a University on Monday February 10, 2020 @12:46PM (#22291376)
Maybe everything.
Re:Open-Source Home Automation on Friday November 29, 2019 @05:48PM (#21667269)
I spun this OS up as a VM and it does not detect my Wemo smart plugs. However, I'm also not able to detect them from my current phone (running v1.24, I believe, of the app). However, my former phone, which is still running v1.23.1 of the app, _is_ able to see them and connect to them.

Anyone else experiencing this same thing?

Re:1/0 = 0 on Saturday August 11, 2018 @12:50AM (#17738408)
To be honest, this is the kind of post I'd write after a few beers when I'm not giving a shit and I think people have the right idea about something a lot of people would find controversial. Great post! You've made a real contribution here.
Re:The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro (1852) on Thursday July 05, 2018 @07:08AM (#17462315)
If I'm not mistaken, he is buried at Mt. Hope cemetery in Rochester, NY. I remember from my visits that he has two grave stones, each with a different birth date, because his real birth date is unknown.

Actually, according to the Wikipedia article, "The exact date of his birth is unknown, and he later chose to celebrate his birthday on February 14. In his first autobiography, Douglass stated: 'I have no accurate knowledge of my age, never having seen any authentic record containing it.'"

Honestly, after seeing the first list comprehension, I can tell that this feature will probably increase code readability for me, but it's definitely going to take more thought to understand where values are coming from.
Re:Python’s For - Else on Sunday May 27, 2018 @08:25PM (#17169929)
I agree. It's seldom something I've used in my scripts/small projects for this exact reason.

It should also be noted that there is a `while-else` compound statement as well, wherein using a `break` immediately exits the loop, without executing the `else` clause [1].

[1] https://docs.python.org/3/reference/compound_stmts.html#the-...

I liked the article's statement that "there were no more perches." Is that to say, then, that even birds that "perch" refused to do so on cliffs? Certainly, not all of the trees perished as well.
This sounds like individuals or groups of individuals covering their own rears instead of facing the problem for themselves.

It's very difficult to see product defects from behind a desk. And it's impossible to recognize the personal complications and difficulties that arise for people on the receiving end while looking at statistics and financial reports.

Re:Origami-inspired soft artificial muscles on Wednesday November 29, 2017 @03:21AM (#15805436)
Reminds me of cell flagella.
Re:A glut of PhDs who can’t find academic jobs on Sunday October 01, 2017 @06:51PM (#15380338)
More like the entire higher education system. This is what happens when businessmen run an education system and not True academics.
Re:Facing poverty, academics turn to sex work and sleeping in cars on Thursday September 28, 2017 @12:43PM (#15358611)
I don't understand why this is such a big story. It's not localized to academics.
