I guess you will be able to access the data with copernicus (usually thy even provide raw L0 data)

strangely its not included in the regular font face... only in the italic, bold, bold italic and monospace variant

codepoint E007 is a slashed zero... would be interesting to know why this is not the default
Re:Apache Iceberg now supports geospatial data types natively on Saturday February 15, 2025 @10:10AM (#43059022)
I know icechunk and I’m a huge fan of earthmover. But a common binary format like parquet seems nice… with interop for e.g duckdb and geo queries, you can “just load” era5 and do something like get wind direction/speed along the following path for the last 5 years group by day etc…

its not far from raster to full multidimensional

Re:Apache Iceberg now supports geospatial data types natively on Saturday February 15, 2025 @08:24AM (#43058313)
I’m super exited about the planned support for multidimensional data, I know zarr is there but a long term storage format other than netcdf would be interesting maybe also something to replace grib, geotiff etc to share files
My submission regarding the break up of noaa was flagged 6month ago... didn't age well.. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40988752
Re:Taking a Look at Compression Algorithms on Thursday January 23, 2025 @11:25AM (#42805397)
The conclusion: "One interesting idea is that, at their core, AI models are nothing more than compression models that take the corpus of data humanity has and boil it down to a set of weights" is also good, there is a interesting paper about compressing weather date with neuronal networks: https://arxiv.org/abs/2210.12538

What's missing a bit is that the comparison is more for general purpose data, there are some very interesting and super fast compressing algorithms for e.g. numbers (Turbopforc, gorilla, etc...) Daniel Lemires blog is super interesting about the different algorithms and how to make them faster.

Re:Shortest times between train stations in Europe on Saturday December 28, 2024 @09:30AM (#42531269)
Wow thanks for the hint, I did not know trainline it even shows the connections I’m searching for where trainitalia, sbb and DB failed :)
Re:Shortest times between train stations in Europe on Saturday December 28, 2024 @08:01AM (#42530769)
If you now could just book a train between these cities on a common european platform (or local transportation provider...)... one could dream...

just booking a train and getting a quote crossing multiple borders (without interrail) is just a nightmare :(

Uhhh throwback to simpler times <3 I loved the scene in Basel back in the days

For the adventurous Ishkur also has a nice opinionated guide through the history of electronic music with much of its facets: https://music.ishkur.com/

its a nice lunch break activity in summer, from the Wettstein Bridge to the Drei Rosen Bridge ;) and back with the Traemli
Re:Monitoring marine litter from space is now a reality on Wednesday June 19, 2024 @07:58AM (#40727408)
The thing is most pollution and changes in the ocean are not visible right away, while hiking or on land in general I directly see consequences of littering and environmental impact directly and its possible to act upon (littering on highways)

in the oceans on the other hand a lot of environmental impact is just not visible, thus it needs to be made visible, I see a nice beach.. I don't see particles floating just under the surface, I don't see destroyed eco systems by trawling, I don't see "death zones" where no marine live are...

so this is a good step into direction making these things visible

Living in a bigger small town in Germany I completely agree, I can’t imagine living somewhere where I can’t let the kids roam free… if I’m at the bakery I don’t have to lock my bike (and neither do the others) most of the kids at the local skatepark where I skate come and go on their own, on bikes or public transit and are unsupervised… but nobody would suspect neglect… if something happens we’ll help each other and the parents get called by their friends everyone looks after each other, the older ones don’t smoke their weed near the younger :D and so forth… oh and this is in a more “socially strained” neighborhood not the rich villa type of neighborhood
Re:Mortgages Are a Manufactured Product on Sunday May 19, 2024 @06:15AM (#40405789)
Uhhh this highly depends on the industry… for industry grade flow meters Endress+Hauser or Emerson are actually the first that come into my mind
Re:Loading a trillion rows of weather data into TimescaleDB on Wednesday April 17, 2024 @05:59AM (#40062463)
a good source for ERA5 historical data is https://open-meteo.com/en/docs/historical-weather-api (not affiliated, just a happy user) you can also run open-meteo locally, its quite fast for spatial and timeseries queries

The Copernicus project (esa, ecmwf) also markets some products as „digital twins“
Re:The growing inequality of who gets to work from home on Sunday January 21, 2024 @05:25AM (#39077238)
jep, it gets treated as "gedldwerter vorteil", so it affects your taxable income/social security tax, but depending on the car (E or ICE) and the way you deduct it (driving log, 1% rule, etc...) it can be worth it
Re:The growing inequality of who gets to work from home on Sunday January 21, 2024 @03:01AM (#39076570)
The same inequality between c level and frontline workers exists on so many levels with other perks is it possible that the c level just don’t want to lose its privileges? In Europe as a manager you get subsidized cars where the company pays for gas, private corner offices, equity or special bonus programs not always are benefits packages available for frontline workers… and now they talk about inequality if more staff could have perks like wfh, there always was a divide between staff that needs to be on site and other, only other staff also starts to get some perks in the form of wfh… why don’t give the frontline workers a company car, a private rest zone and better amenities or cash?
Re:I want to convince you to have an on-premise offering on Tuesday December 05, 2023 @01:24PM (#38534912)
This highly depends on the industry… I worked on projects for large F500 companies who had neither ops nor where willing to spend resources… as I mentioned in another thread, on prem can be a world of pain… but it can also be a lot of fun if you have customers like you mentioned
Re:I want to convince you to have an on-premise offering on Tuesday December 05, 2023 @01:14PM (#38534759)
There are still plenty of customers who still run 32 bit windows 2000 or xp installations :( on prem support is often a world of pain :(
Jep when it comes to represent data the colors should not be “beautiful” they should be distinctive and meaningful

There are quite good color maps for presenting scientific data which takes most of your points into account, I personally use the „scientific color maps” for representation: https://www.fabiocrameri.ch/colourmaps/

This is also a design goal for swift, afaik…
