So prepaid works? They allow it? Also are there any issues with keeping my AT&T phone number with the prepaid plan?
Re:Ask HN: An Online Spreadsheet Certain People can Edit on Thursday September 30, 2010 @12:50PM (#1743909)
I could do that. I was really hoping there would be something off the shelf I could use (even if I have to install it on a server.)
Re:Ask HN: An Online Spreadsheet Certain People can Edit on Thursday September 30, 2010 @12:20PM (#1743773)
That would almost work but I'd need a way for the parents to view the spreadsheet without exposing it to the internet or requiring them to have gmail accounts.

Ask HN: An Online Spreadsheet Certain People can Edit

So my wife is coaching a team, and she wants a way for the parents to all post their contact information somewhere online where only her and other parents of the team can see it.What's the best method to accomplish this?(I thought a google spreadsheet might work, but not everyone has a gmail account, and if I make it public I wouldn't want to take the chance of exposing everyone's contact info...

So the answer is learning software!
Re:Steve Yegge's predictions from 2004 on Tuesday February 02, 2010 @12:54PM (#1095488)
It sucks he didn't put a date on that post. Kind of an egregious oversite, right.
Re:Fusion energy hurdle swept aside on Monday February 01, 2010 @11:07PM (#1094263)
A nuclear reactor uses fission. My idea uses fusion triggered by fission (look up how hydrogen bombs work). Fusion is much more efficient that fission which is why my idea has merit.
Re:Fusion energy hurdle swept aside on Sunday January 31, 2010 @08:27PM (#1091515)
I've always wondered why we can't just blow up hydrogen bombs in a giant underground chamber and extract energy from the heat produced.
Hook up a smoke detector to turn off the roaster. If smoke doesn't clear in 1 minute, have it shoot off a fire extinguisher. Problem solved.
Re:Tell HN: I'll work for you for free this summer on Saturday January 30, 2010 @10:29PM (#1089903)
So dumb question. How do you make money doing that? Is it that software companies want their security tested so they hire you? (I wouldn't think most companies would be so proactive.)
Ok now that it's hooked up to a computer, how about using a genetic algorithm to find the perfect roasting settings? (As a bonus it could evolve over time to match your gradually changing tastes.)

I just finished reading "Gray Hat Python". It was pretty interesting talking about fuzzers, and injection stuff. Is that what you guys do?
Re:14 Megapixel, Six Monitor Ubuntu Karmic Setup on Friday January 29, 2010 @11:45AM (#1086839)
Do a blog post about this. I think it's a question everyone has had at some point. How much of the bezel is really neccessary? Can it be removed DIY?
Re:Ask HN: Why is there no stylus with the iPad? on Thursday January 28, 2010 @10:45AM (#1084067)
So you could make a thin stylus if you put a charge on it? I guess otherwise using a conductor it would have to be the size of your finger.

Might be a good idea for a third party product?

Re:The iPad Big Picture on Thursday January 28, 2010 @08:49AM (#1083755)
sign with your finger? That's probably harder than signing with a mouse.
Re:The iPad Big Picture on Thursday January 28, 2010 @08:47AM (#1083749)
Counterpoint: my mac stopped seeing my iPhone. There was no advice on the internet on how to fix it. I'm completely lost at what to do. I can't upgrade the phone's software, and can't load new songs, I can't backup my phone :-(
Re:Reinforcement Learning: An Introduction on Thursday January 28, 2010 @08:35AM (#1083720)
Could I train a robotic hand to catch a ball with this? What would be involved?
Re:Panopticlick on Wednesday January 27, 2010 @10:52PM (#1082943)
Does my browser send all of that stuff on every HTTP request? It seems wasteful.
Were there patents on compression algorithms? Are there any weird things Linux has to do to work around patents?
Re:Google’s Founders File to Sell 5 Million Shares Each on Saturday January 23, 2010 @02:36PM (#1072278)
In theory yes. But let's say 80% of company X shareholders wanted a large one time dividend payout but the executives of company X don't want to do it.

At the next board election they simply choose two candidates but both who agree with what the executives want.

Re:Google’s Founders File to Sell 5 Million Shares Each on Friday January 22, 2010 @09:05PM (#1071213)
Nice idealistic thoughts, but the board of directors controls a company. Share holders can't do much except for vote for whomever they put on the proxy.
Re:Keeping computers from ending science's reproducibility on Friday January 22, 2010 @12:11PM (#1070036)
Speaking of reproducibility, my friend getting a PHD in finance told me he was writing a paper using the data from some brokerage. I asked if he would publish the data and he told me it's confidential.

I talked myself blue in the face trying to explain how science doesn't work if you don't give people enough information to reproduce your research! I couldn't get him to understand though. Arggh so frustrating.

So they expire soon? Could we use the patents as specs to build an open source one when they come of age?

Wait a minute, isn't this what cupcake CNC uses? Why haven't reprap been sued?

Re:Amazon Cracks Open the Kindle on Thursday January 21, 2010 @11:58AM (#1067682)
Yes, besides that one. It seems to completely barf on most PDFs especially multi column ones.

I don't recall the bookmarking working. And annoations and clippings are definately not there.

Re:Amazon Cracks Open the Kindle on Thursday January 21, 2010 @08:29AM (#1067228)
Can someone make a PDF reader for the Kindle? It would display PDF's somewhat sanely and it would allow bookmarking and annotations.
FDM patents? Explain more please.
Re:Ask HN: I made $24k over the last month. Now what? on Monday January 18, 2010 @09:00PM (#1061299)
That's awesome advice! Thanks. I'm going to try it. Are you available for mentoring :-)
Re:Ask HN: I made $24k over the last month. Now what? on Monday January 18, 2010 @11:37AM (#1060155)
I'd love to try your advice but I've never been able to find such a niche. Everytime I try to think of one, I get "niche block". Any ideas?
Re:Ask PG: What have I done wrong? on Friday January 15, 2010 @09:49AM (#1054952)
What does dl;dr: mean? I couldn't find it in the urban dictionary.
