Itching to build something but have no idea what people want anymore. I feel like everything has been built. What pain points do you wish someone could solve? What do you think there is an opportunity for?
Not being able to move the window is a huge miss imo.
What is wrong with these people? Can this seriously be anything other than a mind virus?
Is “secure hospital” euphemism for mental institute? I must have missed when this one was introduced.
I think this is all another way to say life is emergent. It can’t be found by zooming in, but rather only by zooming out. And of course when you zoom out you lose your ability to be very precise about definitions and constituents.
Giving optimistic estimates based on generalized vehicle information, then giving more precise estimates after the 50% mark—and after having collected usage information based on the user’s actual environment—sounds to me like a decent algorithmic solution to a hard problem.
> The company’s aggressive pursuit of growth, coupled with lack of moderation in the app, has already led Signal employees themselves to publicly question whether growth might come from abusive users, such as far-right groups using Signal to organize.
Lol what? What exactly does far-right mean in this case? Why intersperse irrelevant political digs at another ill-defined faction? Does far-right just mean non-progressive and conservative?
So what? We’ve been here before. We already know the effects alcohol has. But we also know the effects alcohol bans have.
This reads like a poor DHH impression.
They lost their whole dev team? Can you share a link?
Surprised no one has made the connection that this score will be used to determine the extent of FSD is available to you, which seems a great solution to the scary mass-distribution of the vehicle-as-a-weapon approach.
If you do have an MRI, skip the contrast. They describe it as a harmless dye when in fact it’s a toxic heavy metal known as Gadolinium injected straight into your bloodstream, and is retained indefinitely by your body and deposited in your bones and skull:

One thing I never understood about Twitter, and what keeps me from tweeting, is why on earth everyone needs to see how many likes, replies, and retweets my tweet has? I will never be a Twitter influencer, and have no desire to be. I just want to tweet one-off learnings or thoughts I have without the awkward struggle of trying to compete with others.

My company has been a remote company from day 1. Each member is located in a different part of the world, and we’ve never met in real life, beyond just video calls, Slack, and email.I told a colleague about my intention to fire an employee by sending them an email, and he was taken aback. He said you should always fire face to face, in a video call.Do you think it is “inhumane” to fire a remote...
Right? This confused me too. I thought rents increased 31% when I initially read the headline.

I lead a remote team and give each individual the flexibility to choose their own working hours and capacity—"your work speaks for itself", etc. We're working on a long-running software project with a deadline that's fast approaching.I want to ask my team to work a little harder to meet our goal. However, I find it unethical to require people to work overtime, in return for pseudo-glory or...
This is interesting, but is essentially taking the present and multiplying it 10x. Which is never really how the future turns out, but always how humans think the future will turn out.
I'm often embarrassed by an opinion I held even 30 days ago. I just can't participate in modern "current events" or discourse because I too strongly consider both sides of an argument, whereas Twitter seems to be about blindly embracing one side and advocating for it relentlessly.
Building a "personal brand" helps create a following around you so that when you build something new, you have people that are interested in it. Maybe "audience" is the better word.
> then those are just casual thoughts and trivialities.
This is all of Twitter, pretty much. Most people's tweets are literally farts of the mind, yet they have no problem sharing them without the slightest feeling of self-consciousness. And it works for them, I guess. That's the whole point of Twitter.

I have a personal twitter account with around 2k followers. But I haven't tweeted in over a year. I really kind of want to. It looks like fun. And it's good for building an audience. But there's something about posting a pithy opinion in < 200 characters that feels smug to me. More than that, I guess, is the feeling of permanence with every opinion. There's not been a time that I haven't...

This is silly. Since when is engineering competence measured by how few lines of code you write? Arguing about lines of code sounds like a topic a Hollywood TV show might broach to appease normies, when in reality the conversation is meaningless.
Right, conversations are usually triggered by back and forth reactions. Is the act of speaking propaganda? It could be, but usually it's to convey a thought you already hold.

I'm located in the US and would like to file a trademark for my product name in China. However, this field is ripe for suckers to get taken advantage of, and doing a quick Google search reveals a number of very competitive marketing results, none of which seem authoritative.Curious to hear if you have any direct experiences with this, and what pitfalls and common mistakes to avoid.
I think it’s fine to assume they may be acting genuinely. The alternative would be to see this as propaganda, and dismiss Apple as nothing more than a bunch of suits making decisions based on short term gains over long term health and stability. Because why would any corporation, especially Apple, attempt to act rationally, right?
I have no horse in this race, but running a company, I know it’s possible to also have our truth and want to communicate it in a way that’s easy to understand. I don’t know if Apple is, but not every company has to be this demonic incarnation-of-evil we want to make them out to be.
While ProtonMail’s marketing has always stood out as over the top self-congratulatory, the reaction of people saying “oh no, I need to find an alternative now” represents a fairly naive understanding of the very nature of communication platforms on the internet, especially email.
There is no alternative here. There is no company that will ever solve the problem, within the existing email protocol, where one unencrypted sender (say, marketing emails) can send to a so-called “encrypted receiver” and not have an intermediary able to temporarily read the emails. This is inherent in the design of the system. ProtonMail is not end-to-end encrypted in this case, and no email provider can be on the traditional web.
There are no alternatives. There is no hard, scientific, mathematical solution to this. The best you’ll get is “soft encryption”—the equivalent of encryption where the third party offering the service chooses the encryption key.
It might help to explain the Medium third party publication system, as it wouldn’t exactly be clear to people who haven’t experienced it before.

Almost every other link I click on HN now has some sort of proprietary paywall. Assuming that even in an optimistic case where a user can and is willing to maintain a monthly subscription to only 1 out of the 30 blogs that ask for payment, isn’t there a lot of left over inventory that publications can sell cheaper to non-primary readers? And if so, can we expect to see a MoviePass/Spotify type...
