Re:Bear turns 10, and it still feels like day one on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @12:24PM (#50354990)
I've been using Bear for a long time. I tried Obsidian to move off Bear, but it didn't last long. The Bear UX is just great and that's what's kept me around this long.

I feel bad for anyone who joined post 2021... They raised at like $39b that year, then another qtr billion later that year at an undisclosed valuation. This is effectively a "down round" here and everyone who got shares at a $40b+ valuation is getting screwed. I interviewed with them many years ago and ultimately decided against it - their dilution was insane, looked to keep going, and the valuations were absurd at the time already given how few people were actually using it... I think they had maybe a $4b value at the time though. Honestly I think COVID was a huge boon to the company and finally gave them some much needed revenue/membership growth.

It is not, it's basically the last 1/3 of the thing

Re:Burning Man Death Rates – A Short Lesson in Statistics on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @01:40PM (#49912033)
This year of the 3 deaths, 1 was just a heart attack in someone around 60 yrs old (a ranger who was working, so not drug related most likely). The other fell from an installation. Some of these are literally just scaffolding with a couch on top or something - I climbed one and was terrified and even said "wow, I will be surprised if someone doesn't fall off this intoxicated at night".

Some people see that as a feature though - they want the danger and lack of regulation and safety. It's part of why they attend I guess.

note: it was my first time - i'm not a "burner", just wanted to finally see what all the hype was about

My favorite game of all time. This is awesome
i actually had heard it helps w/ bloating/stomach issues online and took for a while and def noticed a debloating effect and less gas... obviously 1 anecdote, but I'd assume any slight waistline reduction is due to that. Also sidenote: pooping often made it feel like I put a breathmint... up... "there" lol
Re:Elevators on Friday July 31, 2026 @01:39PM (#49126279)
We did this in college as well using microcontrollers and leds or something - i forget the exact details. It was super fun
Ahh you should've gotten an email from orate.to with the license key -- Polar generates their own license key I just found out...

I am updating so the polar key will work and fixing the webhook verification thing and then changing it so we re-use the key polar creates.

Thanks again for the help debugging!

Check tomorrow and it should accept the key!

Not yet but that's a great idea! I can work on that! I'm also about a week away from an iOS app
Found the issue, published a new build, added a few features, and tested on a few devices now that I'm back home. Should be fully operational for you now!
Looking into it again.. Thanks a ton for the help debugging. I haven't run into any of these issues personally
Okay, 0.1.9 is out now and should fix the issue... I also added a way to report crashes, so IF it still gives you issues, let me know and please report the crash

Yep, I'm on it... Should be ready in about a week!
On it! Pushed out a fix for something else earlier and didn’t go through a clean install to test. Should have a fix shortly. Just getting off a plane though. Will follow up when I have it nailed down.
On it! I’ll ping you when I have a culprit
Oh also, on the website, the first preview in the hero does give a real synthesized example I pulled using the app! Its not clear that the other screenshots are not interactive
The Chatterbox HD plugin actually does AI voice cloning, but I didn't expose it yet. That's a great idea to see if it can do different voices and I could clone some popular ones. Device sync is coming soon!
Can you paste your system specs here for me? It's running for me just fine and on a few other laptops here, but I am curious if there's something on your laptop that might be giving issues... It does require Mac w/ Apple M1+. Happy to debug and get it working for you!

Show HN: Orate – On-device neural text-to-speech queue for Mac

https://orate.to/

Hey friends! Brad here - long time HN user, founder, engineer (Coinbase, Soothe, Jeevz, Release, Hired, GrowthX, etc)...I have been struggling recently with too many tabs, emails, articles, etc sitting unread while I swap between Claude code sessions all day. So I decided to build Orate to help me work through the backlog by listening to it all like I would a podcast.Orate allows you to select...

Re:NYC to open municipal grocery store in 2027 on Tuesday April 14, 2026 @02:53PM (#47769752)
My fil owns a bunch of grocery stores in Russia. The gov't still essentially subsidizes the cost of basic goods to keep prices low for the poor. Because of this, even the poorest have access to what they need, and they worship Putin because of it - "he makes sure we're taken care of". Obviously we could get into the corruption, why they're so poor in the first place, etc, but it is clearly working pretty well.
Re:NYC to open municipal grocery store in 2027 on Tuesday April 14, 2026 @02:49PM (#47769689)
Many people losing their minds over stuff like this... I'm just glad some people are finally trying out new ideas, because the status quo is not working for a large portion of the American population.

I just hope they properly track and monitor the outcomes and foster honest/open feedback. The gov't loves to throw money at problems, but never really does much to analyze, pivot, or admit when something doesn't work because that just gives the opposition ammo.

Re:Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic? on Thursday January 15, 2026 @06:14PM (#46640784)
So then I guess it seems like you're rejecting the premise then that there's a loneliness epidemic?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loneliness_epidemic

I get what you're saying -- I leave my house more than most. But I think it's pretty clear we're trending away from that being the default.

Re:Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic? on Thursday January 15, 2026 @05:51PM (#46640544)
You're completely missing the point. The problem is people aren't collectively incentivized to do so. Individually someone can decide "oh wow, I'm lonely, I should get out more", but collectively there's nothing incentivizing everyone to do it, or even notice it's an issue. If there were, we wouldn't be in this situation.

---

"How do we solve the obesity problem?" "Well people should just work out."

Obviously, that would solve it, but they're distinctly not doing that, which is why we're talking about a broader solution to actually get people to work out.

Re:Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic? on Thursday January 15, 2026 @05:49PM (#46640529)
Yeah I'm very willing to socialize and actually do far more than pretty much anyone I know, even those without kids (but maybe not as much as a 25 year old just getting started in the world and living in SF like I once was). I'm lucky in that regard I guess.

Oh absolutely... I just look at the office as a "forced" version of what you said. Totally agree it's way more than just the office
