Mode Analytics — San Francisco, CA | Full-time | On-Site Frontend Engineer, Backend Engineer, Sr. Software Engineer

Mode is an analytics platform. We build an integrated toolchain that combines SQL, python notebooks, visualizations, and interactive reporting together so that companies can answer their most challenging analytics questions quickly and easily. We're a team of analytically minded people dedicated to serving data analysts, scientists, and engineers in companies and communities of any size. We're looking for folks who are driven to make change and who believe that a world where analysts are more impactful is a world they'd rather live in.

Tech-wise we primarily use Rails and Go on the backend and Javascript/Typescript on the web side. Some of our engineers work in adjacent parts of the stack and some prefer to focus in on deep expertise in one part, it's really up to you and where you want to focus and grow.

On top of contributing to a product that our customers love you'll be contributing to a culture that you love. There's a lot more to a fulfilling life and successful career than just "crushing code". Come work at a company that thinks more intentionally about work-life balance, diversity, inclusivity, and productivity.

This is more likely to be the case from the transition from independent power generators to the electrical grid.
Re:Amazon QuickSight – Business Intelligence by AWS on Wednesday October 07, 2015 @08:41PM (#10350155)
Co-founder and CTO of Mode here. I'm not too concerned that visual exploration is going to replace SQL for ad-hoc data analysis or data modeling for business intelligence. I think proprietary viz platforms are strictly inferior to open sourced ecosystems like Vega in any case. Open ecosystems win over closed ecosystems in the long-run.

We're more interested in integrating the tools and ecosystems people are already using in novel ways than we are in being yet another dashboard or visualization tool. Dashboards and visualizations are incredibly valuable but they're just one of the many ways that analytics teams deliver value to the organization. There are a lot of "jobs to be done" for an analytics team and the list isn't getting any shorter.

Re:Uber car attacked by Paris cab drivers on strike on Monday January 13, 2014 @01:45PM (#7052472)
The airport exists at and is allowed operated at the will of the government and citizens of France of which the cab drivers are merely a small part. No single union could ever claim the exclusive rights to transportation to and from the airport it as their worksite. That's an absurd analogy.

That reply might be off topic for the article. I just think the headline isn't topical in any way. It saddens me.
A ratio without a denominator is useless.
Re:Microsoft to acquire Nokia on Tuesday September 03, 2013 @02:15AM (#6319304)
Specialized hardware was always kind of a stopgap. Even now you can see networking companies facing the double threat of virtualized networking in software. Software is eating the world as Andreessen famously stated.

As to the life span of tech companies I think it will only get shorter. One thing I find interesting is that it's difficult for humans (including myself) to really internalize the overall effects of compounding interest. I read a comment the other day in which the author was joking about how they can't wait until 2023 when they get to look back and feel how they do now looking back at 2003. It doesn't always seem that the speed at which things are happening is increasing dramatically even if that's the case. The progress between 2003 until now will be completely overwhelmed just a few years from today.

Re:Let’s Talk Your Data, Not Big Data on Wednesday November 14, 2012 @11:05PM (#4787035)
At Yammer we used to have a phrase that analytics was "domain knowledge + counting". Lately we've moved to "analytics is workflow" which better captures the deep integration of data, analysis and business decisions that we have now. I still think the first thing matters a lot. You don't necessarily need fancy technology. If you can count and know everything about your business and what makes it valuable then you can start building real insights.

Re:How To Get Experience Working With Large Datasets on Tuesday February 21, 2012 @12:53AM (#3615377)
Shameless plug, but if you want to work with big data you could just apply for this position at Yammer. DO IT!

Ahh I see it's in the extra small note at the bottom

"I mean primarily the ability to face a network partition and continue providing write service to all clients transitively connected to a majority of servers."

Probably should be a little more prominent considering it's one of the first questions you'd want answered but I was a bit careless to miss it.

What happens when you CAS the same key from two sides of a network partition and the partitions rejoin?
"They wouldn't be spending all that time and money on events if they didn't work"

false

This is exactly why these are amazing. He took a group activism site that basically couldn't make anything and turned it into the fastest growing company in the history of the world. They turned down a $6 billion offer and paid for all these superbowl ads.

The real irony here is people's principles don't actually matter. People can't help themselves and will take saving $15 on a dinner millions of times over rather than offering it up to any of their principles or supposedly lofty morals. Mason discovered the real secret here which is it doesn't matter which moral road you're on people can't help themselves.

The reason people think these are crass is that they can't deal with the realization of their own moral corruption and hypocrisy. These commercials are a statement about the same people who are lambasting them. They got trolled and the more they rage the more they out themselves for the ruinous morally crippled savages that they truly are.

Re:Ask HN: Who's Hiring? (February 2011 Edition) on Monday January 31, 2011 @04:53PM (#2163348)
If you have a data fetish then you should stop reading anything else on this page and email me personally at jferguson at yammer-inc dot com with your resume and tell me why you love it.

Big data, we've got that. Social networking, we've got that too. If you're tired of only dreaming about using data to iterate on a real product at a startup that is crushing everyone else in their space then you should get excited right now because Yammer is that place. Distributed databases, real time data streams, ruby, rails, scala; this is the position you've dreamed about your entire life! How many people get the opportunity to come work on a data team at a startup? Stop sitting around thinking about doing awesome things and come do them.

Also the food is delicious.. no really.. it's that good..

Arbitrage supplies liquidity at all prices, including prices where most trades might not otherwise occur. Liquidity is required for businesses to systematically eliminate risk, therefore it is highly valued as a source of stability for most companies who deal with financial instruments.

Knight has some thoughts on systematic risk in his book Risk, Uncertainty and Profit.

Proving once again just how many phone calls techcrunch makes before posting stories containing "facts" and opinions drawn from those "facts". If anyone here works for a startup in the bay area, you'll know the answer is generally absolutely none.
