Science is bad for you.
Re:Rikers Drove My Innocent Patient to Plead Guilty on Saturday October 31, 2015 @09:26AM (#10482571)
But did you read the article. So let's say plea bargain doesn't exist, then you spend years in jails waiting for a trial as opposed to copping a plea and maybe get timed served.

Re:Weak passwords brute forced on Tuesday November 19, 2013 @11:33PM (#6766310)
Seems a bit excessive for a open source repo site.

Is Armchair Quarterbacking of healthcare.gov really good for the site?

I have seen a lot of analysis of healthcare.gov. Some are saying it needs to be written. Some are just looking at little snippets of JavaScript and saying that the tech leaders need to be brought in to fix it. Others want to fix it over github or through open source. The site was released this month, publicly. Should we really analyze the site that quickly and only take the pessimistic view....

Re:Credit Card Processing as a Commodity Business on Friday September 27, 2013 @08:00PM (#6460302)
We work with credit card vendors and to me, it seems like an easy business. You have many companies that want to be PCI compliant and they want to save money and they want reliable service. With credit card processing, it is really quite easy . Charge a credit card, validate, reject, etc. Can you handle all of my transactions? Is your API clean?

The one issue I see:

* Some vendors are slow. E.g. 3-5 second transactions

* Too expensive

* No good PCI compliant user interface. E.g. if I want to embed an iframe into my application. These are kludgy.

Other than that, what a great market to be in. And not just credit card transactions but banking/ach transactions, wire transfers, the whole 9 yards.

You are right, buy/contribute.
Plus, a lot of people feel that software should be free across the board. Most people are paying for the hardware. So if Canonical wants to sell stuff, they better get involved in the hardware side of things.
Probably just like Apple. The Canonical might want a little bit more control of their hardware.
I am pissed off. I am a life long linux user and Ubuntu has done great work.

I am really starting to see Ubuntu used for the desktop in various companies.

But nobody gives a shit enough to invest in their technologies. I think edge is a great idea. I will buy (once the phone is available). That is my contribution.

Ask HN: Has anyone refused to work in a typical 9-5 job?

Or another way of asking, have you has a programmer been unemployed for a really long time? Mostly because you couldn't find a good fit for the type of work that you are interested.I always like the analogy of herding cats, sometimes programmers are just different and work environments can be rigid. Have you held out for a really long time in the job market because you wanted that perfect...

Re:Clojure: All grown up on Tuesday March 12, 2013 @04:01PM (#5364480)
I think you can use both. As Clojure is more dynamic in nature where Scala/Haskell are good compiled static compliments.

Large projects, I would go with Scala/Haskell and for front-end systems, I would use clojure.

Why do it this way? With clojure, you can easily modify data or small pieces of logic. Simply edit the script without the recompile. With the scala/haskell api or library, you probably need something that changes less frequently. That backend system may act as a core piece of your library. ...

And if you don't like that. You can do Python and Java/C# which can give you the same effect.

Re:Clojure: All grown up on Tuesday March 12, 2013 @04:00PM (#5364475)
Clojure has been grown up, it hasn't change that much since several years ago, especially on the surface.

Re:What Is Java, Is It Insecure, and Should I Use It? on Saturday March 09, 2013 @11:49AM (#5348858)
I would even go a step further and talk about the Java runtime plugin supplied by Oracle for Windows?
Re:What Is Java, Is It Insecure, and Should I Use It? on Saturday March 09, 2013 @11:49AM (#5348855)
And I am assuming this applies to the Oracle web plugin on Windows? E.g. does the Icedtea plugin on Ubuntu have these issues?
Is the game any good?
I live in apartment. Not a micro-one. But I imagine you can find solace in just having only the things you need. Why do you need a ranch size home and 20 acres?

Question, was he a dictator or a socialist? Was his country an OK model for socialism?
Re:Ask HN: Leaving VC, what now? on Tuesday March 05, 2013 @05:04PM (#5327689)
Got ya, I was applying to financial firms for a NY position. 100% of them wanted 3.5 GPA from an Ivy league school.

Seriously?

I applied anyway and got some responses.

Ask HN: What are your thoughts on creating popular software?

How do you create popular software projects, either open source projects or actual software products like Android applications that people really use?I am sure there are a lot of developers that read ycombinator and reddit and have development experience but for whatever reason haven't created a popular software tool by themselves. Maybe they aren't motivated enough to do so? Or maybe they...

Re:How I spend my first 5 minutes on a server on Monday March 04, 2013 @02:02AM (#5317062)
I am new to this. I don't allow ssh logins password based.

The hackers fail according to sshd but logwatch lists a list of chinese and russian attempts.

I was hoping my firewall would block them. I tried entering a block of ips but some of the same ones are connecting.

I don't know what this means:

Illegal users from: undef: 20 times 183.60.177.246: 7 times 217.14.134.68: 7 times 219.149.30.170: 6 times

Re:Reverse Engineering OKCupid on Monday March 04, 2013 @12:52AM (#5316900)
It is interesting, when you read a lot of his stuff. It seems that absolutely did not want to worry about the "user" space. User software.

I always wondered, did he ever write user level code. He did write 'git' eventually. But I wonder what else, what does he think of web application development, etc?

Re:Reverse Engineering OKCupid on Monday March 04, 2013 @12:21AM (#5316799)
I didn't want to say it but yea I thought BeautifulSoup has way more development.

I wonder if you disagree with him, he will unleash his wraith upon ye.

Re:How I spend my first 5 minutes on a server on Monday March 04, 2013 @12:16AM (#5316780)
What do you about all of those chinese hackers hitting your sshd server.

I have 30 different ips and fail2ban doesn't seem to ban them.

Re:How I spend my first 5 minutes on a server on Monday March 04, 2013 @12:14AM (#5316773)
It may seem like a waste of $20 a month if you aren't doing anything big with it.

But you can setup a linux virtual server on linode and go through all of those steps on your own. Also test out your setup.

Re:Programming Languages Are Simply Not Powerful Enough on Friday March 01, 2013 @12:35AM (#5302994)
And yea Java is popular and doesn't really abstract much. I guess with interfaces, it is kind of a rough abstraction.
