Re:The Cab Ride I'll Never Forget on Wednesday May 02, 2012 @01:21PM (#3920143)
You seem like a nice human being, truly wishing death upon someone because they find your precious sob story hokey is the hallmark of someone who is empathic and mature.

EDIT: Oh wait, I see now! It was not your intention to actually emulate the hilariously 2D caricatures in the story and be sympathetic and nice to all comers, no that something you reserve for the safe idealized realm of fiction where there is no chance for disappointment by the messy and contradictory things we call humans. I've got your ticket man and you seem to be in good company with the majority of HN, I mean who would have guessed that the money hungry posers on this site would be into empty sentimentality?

Re:The Cab Ride I'll Never Forget on Wednesday May 02, 2012 @12:00PM (#3919741)
As long as we are dictating what other people should be thinking about here is a quote from the late great James Baldwin I think you should mull over.

'Sentimentality, the ostentatious parading of excessive and spurious emotion, is the mark of dishonesty, the inability to feel...the mask of cruelty'

Re:The Cab Ride I'll Never Forget on Wednesday May 02, 2012 @11:02AM (#3919390)
I'm unmoved by this sentimental drivel, and I think your urging to "please pause for a moment and ask yourself why" is the most pompous thing I have read on HN.
Re:How Did Israel Become “Start-Up Nation”? on Thursday February 02, 2012 @08:50AM (#3542645)
What logic? What are you talking about? The US is above Israel on every sub-index. Besides it is obvious that it is relative to population because in absolute terms the US would far outstrip any competitors.
Re:How Did Israel Become “Start-Up Nation”? on Wednesday February 01, 2012 @05:38PM (#3540420)
There is an index that tries to measure innovation called the Global Innovation Index (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Innovation_Index_%28INSE...), interestingly Israel comes in at 14th, you'd think they would be number one if this article is to be believed.

> half the technology you and I use everyday would not EXIST if there was no Israel.

Could you back this up?

Re:Is This The Girl That Hacked HBGary? on Thursday March 17, 2011 @02:13AM (#2335254)
Why is this upvoted? It's clearly wrong, those are syscalls to the windows kernel.
Re:Using prescription stimulants as study aids on Tuesday March 01, 2011 @09:14AM (#2275399)
If you need that big of a crutch then you shouldn't be attending university in the first place.
Re:Offer HN: Room in Vienna, Austria on Thursday October 28, 2010 @08:35AM (#1842604)
> no matter how much more educated you are then this simple peasant, she knows she can humiliate you

Education doesn't make you superior to anyone, and calling an honest worker a "peasant" shows that you are not especially enlightened.

> just pause and remember what happend [sic] there in the 1930's

You as a Turk should pause and remember what happened 1915-1917 in Turkey, and maybe this time you will have the balls to admit you committed genocide, before that you might as well give up on criticising anyone else's history.

Reminds me a lot of http://www.kaninkul.com/games/773/copter.html , both great games.
Re:URL Shorteners are evil, here's one to prove it. on Tuesday October 27, 2009 @02:55AM (#905010)
Isn't it a bad idea to retrieve any url since then an attacker could use this service to sql inject without leaving his IP on the victims log?
Re:Ask HN: Why no love for PHP? on Wednesday May 06, 2009 @12:20PM (#596036)
When you know you could save pages of code with it, being without proper higher-order functions is beyond tedious.
Then you should avoid the word fuck instead of bowdlerizing it.
This is the internet, you can write F.
Re:50% of Charges Against Pirate Bay Dropped on Tuesday February 17, 2009 @10:42AM (#484577)
So after two years of planning they drop half the case after just one day in court?
Yep, PKD is something special alright.
Re:Dear Reddit, Hacker News... on Thursday December 25, 2008 @06:28PM (#409832)
There are a lot of smart people on reddit, dons, cgibbard, sigpfe and slava_pestov to name a few.
Re:Ask HN: Writing DSL in Python on Friday December 19, 2008 @06:48PM (#404008)
I've also been interested in DSLs and found some very cool code samples implementing an EDSL (embedded DSL) for describing shapes. I have looked at it countless of times for ideas when I'm writing my own. Although the code is in Haskell I think you can learn a thing or two from it.

Wide brush generalization supported by an anecdote and a hypothetical situation... pass.
Re:I find this startup rather disturbing... on Tuesday October 14, 2008 @08:39PM (#332834)
With tools like this I'll probably remain unemployable indefinitely as anyone with a subscription will find my quaint short stories. Written at a time of youthful tribulation they read like PKD with a sadistic streak.

Or I could just get a new email, but then I'd have no audience and possibly miss out on some interesting conversation.

'So, the main character gags on a dildo laced with LSD?'

'Yes, sir, it's suppose to symbolize the rape and indoctrination of the indigenous people of the amazon'

Re:When PHP Actually Is Your First Programming Language on Monday October 06, 2008 @04:46AM (#324713)
My first programming language was mircScript, and I turned out okay.

    a = ["red", "green", "blue", "black", "white", "yellow"]; "I have %s and %s" % (", ".join(a[:-1]), a[-1])
Well almost...

Re:Hyperbrain Owner's Manual - 1. the big picture on Thursday August 28, 2008 @08:09AM (#289051)
I know confirmation bias can be a bitch, but this is just ridiculous. Its like a frenzy of "Me to!!11" in here every time a list of traits is published and then sure enough someone vomits all over a blog and produces a self-help guide with feel good "you art special" theme. </cynical rant>
