Re:StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month on Thursday October 29, 2026 @05:13AM (#50286362)
As someone who spent some time participating in the filtering of SO's questions, considering the quality of some of the new question, I understand why the volunteer moderators pushed SO/SE for those question quality control tools and a push for users to use them. But sadly, unlike the upvote/downvote mechanism, the incentives to use them resulted in hasty decisions (close as dupe), which had an adverse effect on the site's reputation.
> Like, if they hadn't paid for some of the wrap/unwrap features on one of their HSM

Also depending on the FIPS configuration of their HSM, some functionality like wrap/unwrap might not be available

I mean Anthropic can't even build an app that remembers my 'Run on startup' configuration, so I don't really see frontiers models being good at building whole new products
Re:Whatever Happened to Fire Escapes on Thursday October 22, 2026 @08:22AM (#50194337)
Here in France firefighters are first responders and fires are usually a small part of their workload. Last spring I was with a school group that visited a barrack of the Paris firefighter and one of the firefighter who was showing us around told us that firefighting is less than 5% of their responses. And we were shown their garage, where their two fire trucks were (one with a ladder, the other without), but their two other vehicles (two ambulances) were away.

At least Anthem tried something different with the flying robot suits, whereas hero shooters aren't exactly new

> Mass Effect 3 was a bit controversial on release due to the bad ending (but I think it's agreed the rest of the game was solid?)

Mass Effect 3 had plenty of problems elsewhere, like the whole Cerberus, subplot, the idiotic fights with Kai Leng, the whole Crucible concept, how important parts got shoved on in DLCs...

And while DA:I seemed to have been well-received, I don't think it's a very good game

oops, I meant to say without that DLC

Re:EA is shutting down BioWare on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @06:48PM (#50188775)
The only major part of story of ME2 that got paywalled is the Lair of the Shadow Broker and I don't feel like I missed much by not playing it (at least on my first playthrough, second I had the DLC). And even if you take a ME2 save with that DLC to ME3, I felt like ME3 does a decent job of explaining what had happened.

> It took two decades for that to happen

I think 2 decades is a bit generous considering the state of Bioware recently. When was their latest game that was well-received? Dragon Age Inquisition?

I mean Germany even sent soldiers to get trained in the URSS in tank usage, while Germany was still pretending to follow the Versailles treaty. And the trade in commodities between the two continued right up until June 1941

At least dir is aliased to Get-ChildItem nowadays, so it's less typing
As a French, I've been eating speculoos like a few times per year, usually with coffee at some friends' who like them. And I never realized it was written with 2 o and I was thinking it was from Spain. Now I've learned something

If it grabs all sticky notes, including those in the history, that might get a password or user account info that got pasted in a sticky note that got saved and not deleted
Re:Passkeys Are Not a Trap on Thursday October 15, 2026 @10:58AM (#50104647)
I've been working on passkey-adjacent systems recently (including systems integrating the physical passkeys developed by a team in the same open-space) and I don't feel like the passkey industry has answers to that, in terms of ease of use/usability. Right now I'd say between an OTP on a phone and physical passkey is that it might just be quicker to plug in the passkey and push the button (if applicable) than fishing my phone out of my jacket, unlocking it, launching the app and typing the code...
Most wonderful fact is that 55% of people dream of visiting Paris. Of course living just next to Paris puts a damper to any desire to visit

I've been using YT on my FF mobile browser with an ad block and it's been working great.

getting along, in fact. It took me way too long to realize I had forgotten a word there.
that's not really clear... Like if I knew enough those those two groups to identify them with those descriptors, I would have already understood who they were from the fact they tend to refuse HPV vaccines

I don't think the driver is supposed to use the touch screen while the vehicle is in motion

Re:LinkedIn Larpmaxxing on Thursday October 01, 2026 @03:57AM (#49918978)
Really? Apart from the one at the Moulin Rouge, I had a great time at all of the Christmas parties I've been invited to by my current employer. Of course getting with the vast majority of my colleagues helps.
what kind of demographics? I don't think HPV vaccine is a subject I've ever heard about in the social circles I've been in (whatever the opinion on the vaccine).
Teams can already do that, at least the computer version, no idea about the mobile one.
Re:Stanford R&DE Uses AI to Race Swap Students for Advertising on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @11:24AM (#49802862)
Hey, at least they used pictures from actual students. I remember looking at promotional material from the higher-ed place I attended and I think I spotted one picture of a familiar classroom with someone I knew, with all the other pictures being of total strangers in rooms that I had never seen. As the school was rather small, I was surprised that it was the case, until I suspected the communication department, unsatisfied with what pictures they had, reached for stock photos.
I remember a story from an acquaintance working in construction. In one case they had to dug up right where a fiber optic ran, so they had cleared it with its operator and waited for their go-ahead. And waited. And waited, until the boss said something to the effect of 'start digging, we have a schedule to keep'...
