Re:Microsoft: Hey, Apple Maps haters, Use Bing for iPhone instead on Thursday September 27, 2012 @11:50AM (#4581212)
I have Bing Get MeThere in the Canadian app store as well, but it doesn't appear to search any Canadian addresses.
Went to BlackBerry Jam in Waterloo with a co-worker who did a co-op at RIM previously. They played a similar music video and the key joke from my co-worker was "The cost of that music video could've paid the salary of the guy who used to be beside me."

Not to mention, using high resolution graphics when only displaying at a lower resolution increases battery usage and lowers performance of the webpage.

The typography also drives me insane. Add some margin between headings and text, reduce kerning, get rid of p::first-letter { font-size: 200%; }
Re:Ask HN: Best book you read in 2011 on Wednesday December 28, 2011 @04:46PM (#3401526)
Complimentary to Introduction to Algorithms you might enjoy The Algorithm Design Manual (http://www.algorist.com/).

Taking a look at Amazon's past user interface and experience choices, I'd say they skipped every third idea to make the site simple and user friendly.

Like most articles, can't trust this one at all.

Gruber has some excellent thoughts (with actual reasoning) on this which contradict much of what this guy and his "source" is saying.

Yes but I could write this as

1 * 10^(-inf)

Agreed with GED.

As much as I love Ender's Game I've turned my head away at it since I found out that Orson Scott Card was an extreme right-wing mormon. While I don't like to attribute a book's content to it's author I feel like this sort of ruins a bit of the book's magic.

Hackers: Heroes of the Computer Revolution was an excellent read and then of course you can't go wrong with Douglas Adams. Excellent stuff.

I wrote a script to use Wikipedia:Random to check as many trails as possible (still data logging with it now!).

I don't think this analogy really carries over to software development. I think being able to develop quality code in X time even using libraries is a great demonstration of experience.
Re:I'm 16, and need advice on Tuesday April 19, 2011 @11:46AM (#2462947)
I'm currently 16 and have a job making five figures as a software engineer at a company making millions. There is no reason to not start right now.

On the matter of education, I'm taking independent learning at home - this allows me to get my OSSD under my province's Learn to 18 act but not have to physically attend an educational institute. Check if you have something like http://ilc.org where you live.

I would personally not start my own startup at the moment (however getting involved in something is a great idea) as I am still building up contacts and experience. I believe as the founder of a startup you should be the go-to guy, with only two years of experience in what sounds like L/WAMP stack programming environments, you need to spend more time.

Of course, learning from a failed startup is good too.

Re:Ask HN: What software do you use for your startup? on Monday January 10, 2011 @12:35AM (#2087614)
Locally.
Re:Ask HN: What software do you use for your startup? on Sunday January 09, 2011 @10:26PM (#2087315)
Well, - Vim - Google Analytics - Dropbox - Git - Linux - Google Docs - Skype

Not a cent paid, not a single complaint.

Re:Ask HN: What did you get for Christmas? on Sunday December 26, 2010 @02:22AM (#2040250)
My whole family felt entirely spoiled this year so next year we're ditching gifts and donating to the Pinball Clement Foundation (http://www.mpcf.ca/).

Anywho, Neoprene iPad Case, microSD card for phone, desperately needed wallet, RobotShop gift card.

Re:Girl draws on pictures for macbook, already halfway on Wednesday November 24, 2010 @10:21AM (#1937566)
It's a shame so many young people these days don't have her spirit. You don't save a years worth of allowance, you go find what you're good at and share it with others.
I commented on the blog about how she was overreacting and told her to think about how the TSA agent must have felt (having to do that several times per day). My comment got deleted.
Re:Ask HN: 19, developer, burnt out, advice please on Monday November 08, 2010 @10:41AM (#1882754)
This is so scarily complimenting my life I'm paranoid of this throwaway account.
