Or have watched Apple's behaviour with browsers on iOS (yes I know about the Chrome, that's just a facade on top of safari's render and js engine).

"I wonder if Amazon will ever compete with..." Yes has to be the assumption at this point
Re:Amazon’s Alexa Has 80k Apps and No Runaway Hit on Tuesday March 12, 2019 @07:59AM (#19367284)
Shame that we can't do the same in Canada
Re:Microservices Are Something You Grow Into, Not Begin With on Friday October 19, 2018 @07:03AM (#18255756)
In that case you are going to find that you quickly lose your best devs. I'm not saying that resume building should be even within the top 5 priorities, but you will want to at least keep it in the back of your mind. It's a balancing act.

Otherwise the solution is to crunch-time people into oblivion and and quickly replace them when they burn out. Not exactly sustainable

Perhaps your view of what's "mediocre" and what's a "gem" is not consistent with the views of Hacker News readers at large

Don't know anything about PhysX, but I'd imagine they would. I'd also imagine that they'll start building in support for their cloud based physics as used in the upcoming Crackdown 3
Re:Netflix takes gamble with Epix film cull on Tuesday September 01, 2015 @08:52AM (#10151965)
That deal is one of the most interesting, as it seems they've locked up not just streaming exclusivity, but all subscription services, meaning no HBO
Re:No, you're not 'running late', you're rude and selfish on Thursday June 04, 2015 @09:56AM (#9659245)
On the flip side, if you were a customer and said developer was purposely scheduling unknown length tasks once every 10 minutes, knowing full well that this would happen, how long would you remain a customer?
Re:Microsoft Announces Azure Stack on Monday May 04, 2015 @11:18AM (#9486673)
Any particular reason for not liking Azure, or just taking out Monday morning frustration on the world?
Re:Communication App Works without a Cellular Network on Wednesday December 10, 2014 @12:27PM (#8730370)
It would be interesting to see what would happen if Facebook were to use this technology in their mobile app. I'd imagine that you'd be as close to saturation as your going to get.
Out of curiosity, how much does it typically cost to charge, say, an iPhone5? For some (many?) doubling this price might not be as much of a non-starter as you think.
Re:The Case Against High-School Sports on Friday September 20, 2013 @10:55AM (#6418071)
The problem is that multiple changes we made at the same time in that school:

1) Giving Teaches more time for training and planing 2) Making students wear uniforms 3) Aligning the curriculum with more rigorous state standards 4) Drop the sports program

Then spends the rest of the article giving all the credit for the improved test scores to a lack of sports.

seems you check for height being zero, but not max-height

$('img[src^="img"]').eq(0).css("max-height", "0");

it's unethical that the OP is financially rewarded for building something?

Considering the affiliate links offer the exact same user experience as if they didn't use affiliate links, I find you comment perplexing.

Re:Dashing - A dashboard framework on Wednesday March 27, 2013 @08:53AM (#5449078)
While I'm sure it looks fantastic on a dedicated monitor/tv, it's lack of a responsive layout limits it's use in my books

Looking at something like http://dash.social-biblio.ca/torontolibrary on a sub 1080p monitor is less than optimal.

Re:Introducing Netflix Social on Wednesday March 13, 2013 @12:20PM (#5369376)
I begrudgingly understand the delta in content from region to region due to licensing deals. But can anyone explain to me why they would do the same with functionality that wouldn't fall under any such licensing deals?
Re:Introducing Netflix Social on Wednesday March 13, 2013 @12:19PM (#5369367)
In the article it specifically states that it's rolling out this week, and you may not get it till the end of the week
Re:Valve is bringing Steam to your TV Today on Monday September 10, 2012 @11:40AM (#4500329)
This has to be one of the biggest mistakes MS has made with Windows 8. They've added the store to (theoretically) make it simple to purchase and play games (and apps), but left out support that many people would prefer when playing these games.
Re:XBMC and TuneIn on the Ouya on Tuesday August 07, 2012 @10:08AM (#4350130)
Ouya adds a couple of other requirements to the "will work with Ouya":

1) Controller Support 2) Must have at least a free demo, if not another free component.

Also it looks like they won't be having the Play Store, meaning that for many (most?) Android title won't work with Ouya.

Re:How to Make a Game Like Cut the Rope – Part 1 on Tuesday July 31, 2012 @03:01PM (#4319058)
While it's a great tutorial, I was kind of hoping it was in regards to the HTML5 version
However steam will continue to work just like it does now on the desktop.

It's disingenuous for Gabe to talk about how much of a 'Catastrophe' Windows 8 is going to be or how touch screens are "Short-term" but leave out the fact that these fears stem from it's possible impact on Steam's bottom line

Which really does two things:

1) makes this drop completely meaningless as it could be 100% Windows mobile

2) makes you wonder just how low the WP7 numbers would be without Windows Mobile

Re:Announcing Windows Phone 8 on Thursday June 21, 2012 @10:33AM (#4142149)
This is different in that it's nothing to do with hardware. A super simple contrived example would be if someone builds a calculator using c++, you can't install it even though there is no hardware reason that you couldn't
Re:Announcing Windows Phone 8 on Wednesday June 20, 2012 @09:20PM (#4140034)
Unfortunately I think your kidding yourself.

Native applications will not be making it to the Lumia 900 and as such your going to start seeing more and more apps (and especially games), not be able to run on the phone.

Re:RIP, Nokia (1865 - 2014) on Monday June 18, 2012 @11:28AM (#4126850)
To be fair, I certainly wouldn't call the other manufacturers offerings for Windows Phone to be exactly whole-hearted. Have we seen a single non-Nokia device that isn't a port of hardware used for their Android offerings?
Re:RIP, Nokia (1865 - 2014) on Monday June 18, 2012 @11:10AM (#4126730)
I've found for the average non-tech user the only app they seem to really care about is the one that their friends are currently gushing about.

as an example (yes I read the anecdote article :) ) I spent the weekend with extended family who were going on and on about how great Instagram was and how they couldn't understand why anybody would even think about a phone that didn't have it. I'm sure when I see them again in 6 weeks or so, the argument will be the same, with only the specific app that changes.

While MS will have whatever "the" app is at a current moment from time to time, due to it's marketshare, iOS will almost always have it.

Re:RIP, Nokia (1865 - 2014) on Monday June 18, 2012 @10:45AM (#4126619)
While I certainly wouldn't call Nokia's position anything but worrisome, I think it might be a little early to start planning the funeral.

One of the benefits Nokia has by going with Windows Phone is the relationship it now has with Microsoft. I'd be very surprised if Nokia's tablet offering isn't front and center in just about every piece of marketing MS does.

The biggest issue that Windows Phone has currently is a lack of third party applications. I really do think that standardizing the platform across Phone/Tablet/PC will help in a big way with this problem (not pushing them to higher numbers than iOS/Android, but much, much closer than they are today).
