California is extremely rich. You have a water shortage. Water is important
Degrowth is a loser mindset. Why not focus on getting more water, i.e. from the sea as done in Israel?
Doesn't agriculture uses its own underground water that is usually not used for human consumption?

Trust me, you don't want inflation.

Foobar2000 was by far the best player I've used on Windows
Re:Firefox 93 on Tuesday October 05, 2021 @01:28PM (#28762585)
Do you mean in market share or the actual product? Because I use Firefox daily and honestly feels less bloated and better to use than Chrome. I do use Chrome daily also, for some work-related apps
Re:Ask HN: PostgreSQL or MySQL? on Sunday September 22, 2019 @08:25AM (#21041045)
That's a very interesting article. Does anybody knows if Postgres 10 and 11 addressed any of those issues?
For how long? I kind of was at your place (no kids, just my girlfriend) for a few years and then I needed a change
This type of policy is proven to be regressive because:

1) The really wealthy find loop holes.

2) It discourages saving and investment.

3) It encourages consumption and spending on frivolities.

Imagine if everybody would have to start from the ground up, we would rarely see any progress at all.

I like Bill Gates' approach, he gave his children some fortune and allegedly will donate the rest of it

I think he said the actual "Windows source code", not the git repo containing all of its changes

>There’s even a classic joke about it: “How do you make a small fortune in the airlines? Start with a large fortune.”

"The secret to become millionaire is to be a billionaire and buy an airline"

Exactly, they are by far the less biased news outlet I read. For instance, they explicitly don't support Trump, but don't hesitate to say "Trump is right about X", or "Trump did well on Y". They also don't support the Chinese PC, but don't hesitate on giving recommendations that would help them fix their problems (knowing that the Chinese elite read The Economist)
Re:Uganda’s Tarantino and his $200 action movies (2015) on Saturday March 23, 2019 @07:34AM (#19470028)
There are plenty of good independent films

>Remember, this is the period of the Belgian labour system in the Congo, which so upended local economies that 10 million people died – half the population. This is the period of the Natives Land Act in South Africa, which dispossessed the country’s black population of 90% of the country. This is the period of the famines in India, where 30 million died needlessly as a result of policies the British imposed on Indian agriculture. This is the period of the Opium Wars in China and the unequal treaties that immiserated the population. And don’t forget: all of this was conducted in the name of the “free market”.

Free market doesn't just mean low or no taxes. People will do all sort of evil things and hide behind some nice ideal.

The important thing is that none of those countries are doing it anymore and those who do, are quite the opposite of free market capitalist countries (ie, North Korea)

I did freelance work for about 2 years and I didn't feel at all like the author.

To me associating time with money was helpful, but I wasn't thinking on it 24/7. I know that when I feel tired, the most productive thing to do is have some leisure time or simply go to sleep.

To me having a price tag on my time was helpful deciding what was worth waiting for. Trivial things like waiting for a bus or taking taxi, cooking vs take out, etc.

I guess it mostly depends on your priorities and how much money you make. People living on the day or the week maybe don't have the luxury to relax

I use https://old.reddit.com since I can't grasp the new UI

I always assumed that VEVO were legal and the others illegal (unless uploaded by the artist, usually for amateurs or not-so-big-time artists)
Re:How Hacker News Stays Interesting on Sunday January 27, 2019 @09:26AM (#19011793)
So much this. Downvotes are not for disagreements, they should be used for trolls, shills and bigots. If the comment adds a view you don't agree with, write an answer or ignore it. Downvoting in this case doesn't adds value. Reddit suffers the same problem.
Re:US is an oligarchy, not a democracy (2014) on Thursday January 10, 2019 @08:46PM (#18880331)
If you measure their tax base as percentage of their total GDP, you'll be surprised at how small government in those countries are. For instance, by that measure, France has the biggest government of the OECD: https://data.oecd.org/tax/tax-revenue.htm

Lobbying happens everywhere. Having it legalized makes it more transparent and helps you voting next elections. In my country it's illegal yet they do it behind the curtains

How are you measuring the size of governments?
Re:Sobriety startups shaking up the 12-step model on Friday January 04, 2019 @01:47PM (#18826548)
Wouldn't you consider beating an addiction to actually being able to take one or two drinks and leaving it at there?

In other words, if you're constantly counting the days without a drink and struggle with yourself to not drink, are you really "cured" from the addiction?

Re:PyPy for low-latency systems on Thursday January 03, 2019 @04:32PM (#18819486)
That's been the case for operating systems and it's quite effective
It is said that if people can't understand your product right away, you're doing it wrong. But Slack is very successful and yet people just understand what it is after watching a video of it
