Re:Astra can read and write weights to improve Qwen on Monday November 02, 2026 @02:28PM (#50342297)
The equivalent to "human learning math" would be: Astra fine tuning a Qwen model. It's distinctly different from surgically editing weights.
> nobody actually owns the equipment

Unsure what you mean by this. Somebody definitely owns the equipment.

> What is the store to do, employ full-time knob-turners?

How often do you think the knobs would need to be turned? You think someone or something is constantly fiddling with the temperature knobs of each individual freezer?

You mean "it's good that EU will never be a tech powerhouse"? Or you mean "it's good for France to tax large tech companies for internet traffic"?
Re:Northflank Breached on Saturday October 31, 2026 @08:06AM (#50315348)
I've heard many good things about latest GLM models but my understanding is they're not at frontier level?
Re:Northflank Breached on Saturday October 31, 2026 @12:10AM (#50313139)
Okay, cool. Now, tell me how I get access to the frontier models that the attackers use?
Re:Northflank Breached on Saturday October 31, 2026 @12:09AM (#50313130)
I don't believe unprivileged people/companies have access to any frontier model that will do cyber work.
Re:Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance on Friday October 30, 2026 @11:37PM (#50312984)
???
You know who else was "just following orders"? Nazis.

If someone gives you an order that you know has high risk of killing you and your passengers, you can just say no and not do it.

Re:Linode Security Incident on Friday October 30, 2026 @11:26PM (#50312940)
FDIC insurance is mostly unrelated to this. If someone hacks a brokerage, sells a bunch of customer assets for cash, adds new bank accounts for those customers, and then withdraws that cash to those new bank accounts, FDIC insurance does not help at all.
Please stop posting archive.is links. That is a malware distributor.
The right move here would've been to accept the suggestion to drive the train, but not accept the suggestion to drive it at normal speed. The driver should have driven at 40km/h.
Re:Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance on Friday October 30, 2026 @01:38AM (#50300232)
Offhand dismissal of some very uncontroversial statements. Cool. Maybe you should stop spreading intentional misinformation and instead do something positive with your life.
The driver tried to verify by asking a confirmatory question from the controller. So clearly there are in fact ways to verify, even if we can not achieve 100% certainty.

The driver also could have refused the order to drive at normal speed, and instead follow the protocol which caps speed to 40km/h in situations like these.

And if you're the median person (not the average person), you can probably 3x those numbers, because such a large number of casualties in traffic are risk-seeking individuals (e.g. a drunk driver is included in "average person" but not in "median person")
Re:Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance on Friday October 30, 2026 @12:30AM (#50299875)
You see, he's no longer running Binance or participating in its operation in any capacity, per their deal with the Trump admin / Justice department. He's tweeting about this hack as a civilian, offering personal guarantees to Binance customers out of the goodness of his heart!
Re:Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance on Friday October 30, 2026 @12:22AM (#50299842)
I would assume Binance is powerful enough to get Tether to issue new USDT and give it to Binance to replace the stolen-and-frozen USDT.
Re:Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance on Friday October 30, 2026 @12:18AM (#50299821)
So they actually lost a few years' worth of profit on this hack? Could be worse, but not insignificant by any means.
Re:Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance on Friday October 30, 2026 @12:16AM (#50299806)
It may be technically correct, but one phrasing can be easily misunderstood while the other can't.
Re:Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance on Friday October 30, 2026 @12:10AM (#50299785)
Sure, some chain splits fail to get any significant support, so they don't reach anywhere near 51% of mining power. This one did. Hence, it's called a "51% attack".
Re:Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance on Friday October 30, 2026 @12:08AM (#50299771)
Why do you think "holding fiat money" is something that is inherently good or desirable in the first place? Such a weird premise. Money is for the purpose of exchanging goods and services; you're supposed to hold a minimal amount of it. The rest you invest.
Re:Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance on Friday October 30, 2026 @12:06AM (#50299761)
Pensions in Finland are not "indexed to inflation" in the sense that you mean. Our pensions are wildly underfunded and people of working age generally expect to get back LESS than the NOMINAL VALUE of what they've paid towards their pensions during their working life (*when we count "employer contribution" into "employee contribution", which is what it is in reality).
Re:Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance on Thursday October 29, 2026 @11:53PM (#50299692)
Yes it was done by 51% attack. The chain split into ETH and ETC.
Re:Finland investigate Google over destruction of 250k trees on Thursday October 29, 2026 @11:48AM (#50290961)
Incorrect. While there are multiple issues, the cutting of trees is the main issue.
Re:Two high-speed trains collide near Toledo, Spain on Thursday October 29, 2026 @09:55AM (#50289111)
I don't know anything about trains so I can't really propose a solution. I just thought your proposal was funny in that it was very "HN flavored" in a domain that is somewhat far from typical HN domains. Not saying if it's good or bad, just saying I thought it was funny.
Re:Two high-speed trains collide near Toledo, Spain on Thursday October 29, 2026 @01:27AM (#50284887)
No, I don't think all people in Spain work the same number of hours. Also, I think "other European countries" are not a homogenous group, average number of hours worked differs per country.
There was a time period when it worked with used cars, too.
Re:StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @11:38PM (#50284287)
So you're arguing that SO was really un-hostile at first but at some point it became hostile, causing the crash in usage? My recollection is that SO always was very hostile towards users, even during the time period when it was growing rapidly. So hostility alone is not a sufficient explanation.
Re:Two high-speed trains collide near Toledo, Spain on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @02:49PM (#50278977)
Of course HN wants to fix train crashes with a "cryptographic p2p lock". On a blockchain, presumably.
Re:Two high-speed trains collide near Toledo, Spain on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @02:46PM (#50278931)
I'm so fucking tired of you people constantly trying to reduce human accountability after accidents like this that claim lives. It's always the fault of the system and never the fault of any people. As if we are all just cogs in a machine that is controlled by no-one. It is your fatalistic worldview that is directly causing accidents like this. How many more people have to die before we can fix things? Just stop.
