As an experienced software engineer with a CS degree and having worked as an Individual Contributor for over 12+ years, finding some job is not hard but finding a job that pays well like FAANGs and other similar top tier companies is indeed very hard.

FAANGs have changed the compensation game in SF Bay Area, making joining startups for potential financial gains pointless. Benefits are just icing on the cake.

I wonder what techniques startups are using to recruit quality talent in the Bay Area.

Came here to mention about this movie. I watched this movie last year and couldn't stop thinking about it for days after watching it...
On a similar note, any chance of an immigration reform in medium term like 3-5 years that would help reduce the backlog for Indians on EB2/EB3? If not, any alternatives apart from EB5, EB1 that you could suggest?

I don't see a way to search within a company. Like salary of software engineers at level E5 at Facebook.
SE daily is a great podcast with quality content on new topics in Computer Science. Jeff asks great questions and really tries to understand the mechanics of how things work. With an episode every day it's hard to keep up.

Bitwise has better diversification across top 10 currencies based on market cap. Coinbase has lower entry point of $10k minimum v/s $25k minimum required by Bitwise.
Indian so E-1, E-2 is out. Thanks for the response.
How does a non-immigrant who is currently on H1B visa in the US go about starting and working for their own company?

How does a customer pay and use the service? Pay the panwallah and he gives customer a code which is used to bill?
> After that they are given the green card, which lets them work for any company.

Not for Indians, like me, who are waiting in line for 10+ years due to per country cap.

ESO Fund's website doesn't mention about their cut in case of liquidity event. Do you happen to know how much is it?
It's more like engineer meets engineer. Meetings are arranged by parents, matrimonial sites or friends.
I understand not everyone works in tech but it's not unusual for Bay Area couples to make $300k-$400k per year 6-8 years out of college working in tech.

Consider an example of new grad with CS major working in major software company. Currently new grads start at $120k total package (base + RSU/stock + bonus). After maxing out 401k, taxes, rent(with roomates), car payments etc., one can save $35k-$40k per year. So for a couple having worked for 5 years each could save $35k * 5 * 2 = $350k in total. Use $250k to make downpayment to buy $1.25M home making most of mortgage interest deduction. That's how myself and most of my Indian tech friends in Bay Area bought homes. Being lucky in an IPO also helps. Above calculation assumes no student or credit card debt.

What are salaries like for mid-senior level software engineers working in tech companies in Paris? What are the tax rates i.e pay after taxes?
+1. I'd be interested in knowing this as well.

Any recommendations for attorney to review employee option contract?
Engineers like to see that their contribution has real impact on the company. If team does well, delivers project with good quality in reasonable time-frame and despite such efforts if the company languishes then employees will not feel motivated.

Wouldn't this negatively impact hiring in other depts like engineering in near future?
From what I've known, top engineers from VMware had moved to Bebop and recruiting was purely based on their previous performance and contacts with founding team at VMware.
Re:Dropbox scores patent for peer to peer file syncing on Monday January 04, 2016 @06:59PM (#10839834)
AeroFS (https://www.aerofs.com/) is built on peer-to-peer file syncing technology as well. Sad to see no mention about AeroFS on this post :(

Elaborating on early exercise. Employee can choose to pre-exercise ISOs soon after starting job (before vesting) and file 83b. In this case, the difference between strike price and FMV is $0 and hence tax realized is also $0. This also starts ticker for capital gains sooner and if the company gets sold/IPO after 1 year from date of exercise and 2 year from date of grant then long term capital gains will apply and not short-term capital gains which is taxed as ordinary income.

This obviously depends on the strike price on joining the company and how much money employee is okay to lose in case company goes bust. If not all, some ISOs can be early exercised.

In my case, I early exercised around 25% of ISOs soon after joining. In hind-sight I should have early exercised more as the company did go IPO around 2 years after I started...

Thanks for the response, Todd! Since most projects in Hadoop ecosystem are written in Java/Scala on JVM I was pleasantly surprised about choice of C++ :)
