Re:Software Disenchantment on Monday October 23, 2023 @01:44PM (#37989045)
I know this is not too much related but, can we talk about how there is not a single "Printer" driver out there that doesn't harm human souls?
I think most people forget the most important aspect of calendars: farming.

Harvest and plant cycles are stable in this "sun oriented" calendar design.

Every year x type of seed is planted in the same month, and harvested in another. So every year, same months can be planned beforehand.

Re:Increase: Banking API on Wednesday September 14, 2022 @01:49AM (#32833708)
Open Banking is a great concept. Also Turkey has an own local version of it and improving.

It's in Turkish but translate will help you get the idea: https://ohvps.github.io/v1.0.2/contents/odeme-emri-baslatma-...

Same here, I am connecting from Turkey and we are also banned.

We've discontinued servicing users from your location and are thereby preventing access to any of the websites owned and operated by ZAM Network, LLC DBA Fanbyte (the owner of Fanbyte.com):
This decision is ultimately one we were forced to make due to the number of visitors from your region when compared to the operational costs necessary to continue providing access there. It was a tough decision but one that we ultimately had to accept. This is an indefinite decision. Re:The Era of Cheap Natural Gas Ends as Prices Surge by 1000% on Saturday August 07, 2021 @01:56PM (#28100486)
Another reason for increasing gas demand might be related to global drought.

I'm from Turkey and last year the energy production was 30% from hydro electric, 20% from natural gas conversion.

This year, there is a severe drought here and the ratios swapped, 30% nat gas vs less than 20% hydro.

Maybe other countries have similar problem, especially in Asia, so that may explain the demand.

Also this tweet is interesting.

For anyone interested, there is also https://libreflip.org/ website about similar device.
You bought a cable for your phone yesterday. Why don't you buy another one? Don't you wanna buy? You sure? Here are the best single cables in your area ready to be hooked.
There is also the case of "liability". An average driver can drive the car into a tree with no problems at all. No one except the driver is responsible there.

But if a company sells a product with the name "Autonomous Driver", than that company is liable if the product mulfunctions (ie. drives a car into a tree).

Re:The Future of RTS on Sunday December 27, 2020 @11:30AM (#25552086)
I think the previous comment refers to player (human) balance. Not in game unit balance.

You know Elo rating, as in chess? Something like that is needed in order to match players against each other.

An online multi-player game that fails the matchmaker system, will lose players eventually. Because if you match the newcomers with seasoned pros, everyone will be unhappy and churn rates will be high.

Re:Kafka in Pieces on Monday October 12, 2020 @09:22AM (#24754088)
Me too. Maybe this can be solved by updating the title as "Franz Kafka in Pieces".

I know, respecting the original title is a nice thing. On the other hand, HN is a tech oriented web site and +90% of the times if there is a Kafka in the title it is related to the stream processing framework, not the writer. So, just writing the writer's full name (in those rare occurances where the writer is mentioned here in this news site) can solve that tiny problem.

Those are my two cents...

Re:Welders set off Beirut blast while securing explosives on Saturday August 15, 2020 @04:26AM (#24167080)
I think the main issue here is: budget.

Lebanon is in severe economic crisis. And that effects everything, especially government spending.

You say, "a demo expert should oversee storage of these stuff appropriately", well that means hiring an expert. Or "use a professional repair crew"; that means protective gear, removal of explosives around, special cold-welding equipment; and all these require budget.

Hiring 2 immigrant welders for a week = 200 dollars (and I’m being extremely generous here). Versus taking all the security measures and use protective gear to do things right = 20.000 dollars.

I believe there are more and more bad things on the way for Lebanon. A major electricity outage, or a leak in a chemical plant, or a bridge collapsing... All due to maintenance problems, might be just around the corner.

Re:ProtonMail blocked by Vodafone Turkey on Friday March 16, 2018 @03:23AM (#16599149)
A small note (though it may be unrelated), some ip address ranges are not accessible from Vodafone TR (3G/4G) connections.

216.239.36.219 <- For example this address returns "HTTP 504" from Vodafone. There are some other addresses like this which happen to be around, randomly.

So it may be a misconfiguration on Vodafone TR Network, routers or such thing. Sample curl output below.

  $ time curl -vki 216.239.36.219

It is saying "are shipped to India each year" so that means it is coming from abroad, right?
There are 2 questions that are missing in the article.

- Who is producing and selling this antibiotics, in a scale of hundreds of tons?

- Is it produced in India or another country?

Re:1.1B Taxi Rides with 20 Nvidia Tesla P100s and BrytlytDB on Wednesday December 13, 2017 @11:50AM (#15915404)
I agree, single node Vertica vs $50k cluster Brytlyt is not really a meaningful versus.

I'm not sure but, isn't this how the real banks operate, too? For example let's take a legal, legit, Bank named X in a country. If all the account owners wanted to retrieve their money, at the same time: can that bank serve that demand?

Because normally for every 1 dollar deposited inside, bank can give away 5 dollars worth of credits to other people. (the ratio changes in every country probably).

So accusing a virtual currency corporation with "you don't own all that money you claim" applies to a real, physical currency banks. I guess.

Although WD bought HGST [1], it is interesting WD performs worse than them.
