tldr I despise fakirs who misunderstand "the path to good things may involve suffering" as "if you suffer, you'll get good things". There is no reason for monospace with fixed wrapping.

Yes, everyone got fed up with "modern" ways, partly that is the reason AI raise as a simple, plaintext summary. Even on this "gopher site" i have to block css for "less is more"...

Re:JDK 28 on Saturday October 17, 2026 @08:02PM (#50136435)
Sorry if it is trivial but bc you asked shell command and if meant the "java script.java" no compile way: even that is fast, but if you run in a shell script loop thousand times, then do not forget to compile.

Re:Firefox 157 on Saturday October 03, 2026 @09:36AM (#49944135)
Firefox is the alternative. If that's not enough, you can write one, it is not that hard, you can use ... vibe coding

Or try carbonyl or browsh. You'll definitely have no problems with roundness and animations, although other problems might rise, they are terminal browsers. Note that one is chrome, other is firefox based.

To consider, there are different docs:

in repo (can be wiki format):

- dev docs

- user manual

different repo:

- community usage wiki

Stop using link mutiliating tools!

What will be the next? I will be unable to see the domain of a link on hover/longtap and have to trust random links like on a search engine?

MUTINY against hn!

Re:Jev-Leftpad on Monday September 21, 2026 @06:44AM (#49785507)
i maintained a system where for .. reasons (like other systems) from early days have users with id: null "null" "" and some i do not even know how to write here

Re:Apple iPhone 18 Pro Camera test on Monday September 21, 2026 @04:52AM (#49784803)
No.

The site IS the one calculated score and calming marketing. I am not sure what you are referring:

- the studio photos are not provided

- those seemingly same images have slightly different angle what is actually a huge difference, AND only for 2-3 phones, not for all

PS: e.g. different clouds on the portrait example: huge dynamic difference

Re:RSA-896 on Sunday September 20, 2026 @06:36AM (#49774455)
rsa is prime factorization, bitcoin is elliptic curve ps: elliptic curve or breaking sha256 "bitmixing"

Where is a comparing site where the exact same subject and lightening used? Why https://www.gsmarena.com/piccmp.php3 stopped it? I can only find these "trust me" reviews.
Re:Btrfs/ZFS/bcachefs under workloads classic benchmarks skip on Saturday September 19, 2026 @05:29PM (#49770279)
In filesystem subject a proper critique is mentioning ssd vs hdd. I did not added value for karma increase, but karma lost? Who haven't I wished a happy birthday?
Re:Btrfs/ZFS/bcachefs under workloads classic benchmarks skip on Saturday September 19, 2026 @04:24PM (#49769831)
clicked, ctrl+f ssd, hdd, not found, closed
it is like "my fridge is 2mkm (millikilometer) from my desk" m=0.001 h=3600 it should be just Ws or just J
Re:Java 27 Released on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @11:31AM (#49714088)
I never cared about those kind of syntax sugars. I was happy with IDE/static checkers, lombok, mapstruct, etc.

I missed generators like that virtual threading for example.

btw: i was referring a single point when oracle bought sun and "closed java".

Re:Java 27 Released on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @09:29AM (#49712246)
It's on you bc it was (arguably but still) dead 17 years ago.

edit: don't get me wrong, i am not here to hate java, but bc i am also ... hm necrophil :)

Re:Apple Reference Image, but open source and using steganography on Thursday September 10, 2026 @05:28PM (#49650396)
That signature contains time and optionally gps coords, and taking photo of a screen is not simple. So overall does solve some problem

ps:most important: cam/lens settings also in the digital sig, what for a screen is different

Re:iPhone Duo on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @03:10PM (#49632407)
> Why do they insist on every new phone being bigger than the phones before them?

Others wrote complicated or bs jokes, here is my SIMPLE tip:

It has to change otherwise people would not buy new. Size can not change randomly so it has 2 ways: decreasing and later it becomes an iwatch, and tablet becomes a phone: this is stupid because harder to increase price.

So increase it is. If you do not like it, use a watch+earpiece as a phone.

Re:Audacity 4.0 on Thursday September 03, 2026 @10:56AM (#49550822)
After I change from "Program Files" to a user's folder it brings up the UAC.

Why? The "files association still needs it" is not an answer. It is plain unnecessary risk, does not matter that the original author is trusted, still can be hacked.

Re:Nebula Sans on Wednesday August 26, 2026 @12:36PM (#49451974)
define perfect!

- read? mostly coders

- sell? mostly marketing

- fraud? rn.com vs m.com mostly designers

Re:Nebula Sans on Wednesday August 26, 2026 @11:51AM (#49451251)
tldr: yet another trash font: pipe, capital i, small l are the same line

even the alternative variant inconsistent if i want not readable but designer font: the fancy 'a' and 'g' are in the default set and the tailed 'l' in the variant

I didn't read the article, I don't think these kind has any value, but if you are here.. :)

i think it is rather binary, so

P_overall_success = 1 - (1 - P_success) ^ #attempts

and expected number of first success:

n = 1 / P_success

I dunno, that "at least" worries me, digital actually more easier to be lost if it is under copyright, they just got deleted if they can not produce enough money. Physical may have higher chance to survive.

Weekly VSCode Grumbling

Why is it constantly changing and most basic problems are under the rug?Long time ago I reported it and went to backlog or sg. It may seem like a minor issue, but it can be quite frustrating and has a straightforward fix. When scrolling horizontally, it's not apparent that the characters are still there, they're simply not visible.https://i.postimg.cc/C5bN0CQT/vscode.jpg

just be aware of the exact prompt:

"memory usage is important": creates a 1TB binary

"take multiple steps": uses so much power, extreme global warming, it will just print "hot"

"think outside of the box": it will enslave you so you will not care about weather

-1: build transistor from atoms

-2: ...

:)

(ofc the UI could be more simpler but I've found the wiring)

you maybe not select accidental but others do:

user-select: none;
