Re:Jerome Powell Responds on Tuesday January 13, 2026 @08:24PM (#46611135)
Couldn't disagree more. Failed states normally have a single department (the military, often) dictating without opposition what other departments should do. Here we see a functioning system, the President presses, the Fed disagree and push back. The President weaponizes the judicial, yes, but it'll be a long shot. Nothing here smells to a failed state.
I don't believe it's cultural only, the same way I don't believe ethiopians or kenyans excelling at marathons and long distance runs to be a cultural thing. Genetics play a factor, why can't math skills be influenced by genetics as well?

Yeah, that was also a very early thing to evolve. So much that the ones that evolved it hardly could be called humans at all.

Re:MIT invents $4 solar desalination device on Thursday August 04, 2022 @01:11PM (#32345559)
It may cost $4 in the economy where the study was conducted, it may end up costing more in less developed regions.

No they don't... Catfish developers are precisely those who endure doing work that everyone else despises. Fred is just doing what he likes.
Re:Universal Basic Income is Capitalism 2.0 on Saturday August 01, 2020 @05:19PM (#24023989)
Oh, you sound too sure... Have you considered that maybe once not obliged to work anymore you could instead adopt a more entrepreneurial attitude? Perhaps exploring your genuine interests?

Ask HN: How can I control my ADHD if medication not an option?

What techniques can I implement to minimize my attention problema, or at least to minimize the consequences of them?I have most of my life struggled with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. I have avoided to install Everything after I have witnessed the chaos that results from its use in everyone's folder structure. People use to leave files everywhere without any organization criteria and simply rely to use Everything to find everything.

Suggesting that soldiers cannot be heroes while on duty?

It's rather common to see our cultures honor fallen soldiers and regard them as the archetypal case of heroes. Being on duty has never been considered a limitation.

One of the best things are the comments.
I think Knuth is not doing this as a hobby. It's a source of income. This is sufficient to explain why he has spent so much time in this.
Re:Tree planting: Where can I do it and which type is best? on Saturday August 03, 2019 @12:04AM (#20598602)
What would be the advantage of making the land private compared to planting trees in public land?
This is forbidden by github. The consequences of this is having your account suspended.
Atlassian is an Australian company but they own companies in the US so they comply with US embargo to sanctioned countries as well. In fact this was the first company who blocked their services to Cuba.
Yet it's easy to just keep a chromium installation for Google docs and Gmail and do everything else in Firefox.
Re:We Can Do Better Than SQL on Friday May 10, 2019 @07:53AM (#19876875)
This shows that humans can learn languages and get motivated by mastering them. This does not tell anything about the consistency, composability or orthogonality if SQL. Those qualities affecting the newcomers effort to learn it.
Re:Negotiations Failed: How Oracle Killed Java EE on Saturday May 04, 2019 @06:46PM (#19829873)
Where can I read more about AdoptOpenJDK losing its TCK license? Is there any post? Any leak from their team?
I found this idea very motivating indeed. It reminds me not to take myself very serious and just start doing things. In fact thanks to your comments I started a new daring project today that is really challenging. Who cares if I fail... Nothing will be remembered if I fail, and there's always a chance to succeed.
