People dying of starvation and homelessness doesn't matter to many people but that doesn't mean it doesn't have a negative impact on society or shouldn't be solved

How many of those companies business models relies on getting you hooked so they can continue to perform mass surveillance and being careless with the personal info of users and non-users alike?

So very effective?

As usual the Facebookers are coming out in mass to defend their cash cow, despite it's major negative impact on society. Par for the course on this site

I have near 0 trust in the major tech companies (Facebook/Google/Apple/etc.) but amazingly I trust the US government even less. I have absolutely no faith that the US government discovered and solved the salary issues in those companies in any meaningful way

Don't buy a new mid-sized jet then...? You can certainly afford a small, used private jet if you have $100 million. Not to mention a lot of people that own private jets rent/lease them out, just like they do with yachts, which can help to offset a lot of the recurring costs. I know a guy that owns a relatively small business and he has a modest private jet (as modest as you can get while owning a jet) and he certainly doesn't have 100mm. Aviation is one of his hobbies, which likely plays into his decision, but it is feasible

You must pass on a lot of services then, considering how prevalent similar arbitration clauses are in ToS
The Netflix library is awful, and continues to get worse and more limited. There are multiple channels I follow that I get more watch time and utility out of than Netflix
You said you feel bad, in what way did that cause permanent damage? I stubbed my toe this morning and it felt bad but no permanent damage was caused
>I believe that wine tastings are primarily for the social value

You have apparently never tasted wine with a sommelier or wine enthusiast, because I can assure you it is 100% about the wine. Socializing is minimal

...the alcohol in the spit bucket?

I remember thinking this... as an 18 year old in college
I knew this crazy kid in college who purchased pure methamphetamine off the dark web to use as a study aid. He is currently pursuing his doctorate at one of the best medical schools in the world
You must be using some awful services because my experience has been that piracy, and pirate streaming services, are better, easier, and more available than ever

I've never worked at a company where anyone was fired that way

>I know analysing social interactions is seen as a rather, if you will forgive the term, "autistic"

That may be your perception of autism, but this statement is more akin to using "retarded" derogatorily than actually making a comparison. Autism is categorized by deficits in social interaction and repetitive thoughts or behaviorism. "Analyzing social interactions" is certainly not a standard symptom of autism, and depending on the severity of one's social deficit it may not even be possible for someone on the spectrum to do so without the help of a therapist/doctor/behavioral aid. I discovered I was on the spectrum this year, albeit at a relatively low level, and while I personally analyze social interactions a lot due to anxiety it absolutely shouldn't be seen as "rather autistic" as you say as that is a mischaracterization of autism

Re:The Cost of Avoiding Sensitive Questions on Monday December 16, 2019 @11:41AM (#21804347)
None of the examples of the "sensitive" questions I've read are anything that HR would discipline someone for (at least where I work). If the environment was so toxic that people were reporting each other for questions like these, and HR was actually acting on it, it wouldn't be a place I would want to work anyway. Either way, it certainly wouldn't "ruin your life"

Nowhere in OPs comment did he state, or even imply, that he got urine on his hands... The point he was making, which you seem to have missed entirely, is that he ISN'T in fact trying to wash away urine but rather any other nastiness he may have touched throughout the day.

>Increasingly, if you want to be in infosec, you have to learn how to code on the level of a SWE

I think this depends on what kind of infosec work you plan to be doing. I have been a security engineer for the past 4ish years, and while I do have some programming/scripting skills it certainly isn't at the level of a SWE. Most of the projects I work on I end up doing pentesting, risk assessments, remediation for compliance, assisting with policies/procedures, and/or security focused devops work. It would definitely be useful if I could program at the level of an SWE, and I do plan to continue to develop my skills, but I wouldn't say that to be in infosec you have to learn to code at the level of an SWE. I agree with all your other points

>I would also like to add signing up for an AWS Gov account was at least 12 months ago...a completely automated process where I was approved in no more than 15 mins. The account had a credit card but otherwise was 100% still in free tier mode, and in fact was being used by an open source team so it included ppl from around the world.

Are you implying this is somehow an issue? Any US person is able to spin up a Govcloud environment, it isn't meant to be limited to only government agencies/organizations.

I recently worked on a project where we created a govcloud for a non-government company that wanted a secure enclave for a subset of their data. It's certainly not a problem, and I'm not seeing how it relates to this article

Re:TikTok hits 1.5B downloads, outperforming Instagram on Tuesday November 19, 2019 @02:59PM (#21577567)
In the past I used IG to interact with people from niche communities (primarily aquarium related) but I left both because it was acquired by Facebook and I was seeing the huge increase of ads and sponsored posts/accounts as you describe.

From what I've seen of tik tok it seems it's mostly young kids and teenagers lip syncing music, dancing, and doing comedy sketches.

Are there communities in tik tok where people from niche hobbies can share information and communicate? If I could join and find other serious aquarium hobbyists, for example, I may actually consider giving tik tok a try but I was under the impression that doesn't really exist or fit the use case for the app

You say that "a list of quotes from the past has no bearing on the present reality" and then go on to say that "people are really struggling to focus" which is essentially the same point, or at least closely related, that the quotes from the xkcd are making. Why are you acting like the quotes are unrelated when they support what you're saying?
This is pretty cool. It would be interesting to see more industrial projects using some of the space available to them for community activity spaces such as this
If pharmaceutical reps were "advertising to physicians" in that they provide medical information on how a drug works, why a doctor should prescribe it, potential risks, etc. then I might agree. However, it seems like more often than not pharma reps buy doctors a fancy steak dinner and a lap dance in exchange for pushing legal heroin on every person that walks through the door. I would rather pharmaceutical marketing be made illegal, and instead require doctors to do some kind of continued education on advancements in medication and other relevant info.
