Excellent find and breakdown of the process
Re:The Timeless 9 Golden Rules of Debugging on Monday January 13, 2025 @01:21PM (#42686649)
100% agree. I remember I had an on-call and our pagerduty started going off for a SEV-2 and naturally a lot of managers from teams that are affected are in there sweating bullets because their products/features/metrics are impacted. It can get pretty frustrating having so many people try to be cooks in the kitchen. We had a great manager who literally just moved us to a different call/meeting and he told us "ignore everything those people are saying; just stay focused and I'll handle them." Everyone's respect for our manager really went up from there.
Re:I Didn't Need Kubernetes, and You Probably Don't Either on Tuesday November 26, 2024 @10:34PM (#42252646)
It's actually kinda hilarious how RSC (React Server Components) is pretty much going back to what PHP was but yeah proves your point as hype moves on people begin to realize why certain things were good vs not
Re:Not true on Wednesday July 08, 2020 @03:23PM (#23773331)
It just seems barbaric and insensitive that people can be okay with not attributing someone because they forgot a line to say or do so. At least ask unless the person has something that explicitly says, feel free to copy my work as your own!

This is the essence of ethics right?

Re:MVC is dead, it's time to MOVE on (2012) on Tuesday February 18, 2020 @01:20PM (#22358574)
It looks like he just clarified some of the smaller moving parts in MVC but hilariously, he still ends up drawing a triangle for his diagram.

It looks like E (events) is simply to illustrate oh yeah some communication is happening between these layers. I think that is pretty obvious?

I'm not necessarily putting down what he was saying, but I don't think this is something revolutionary. I think he just dove deeper and expanded.

Somewhat of a tangent but related, there is an anime called Dr.Stone where a brilliant genius scientist kid gets ported 3700 years in the future and people have reverted back to the stone ages. He teaches them how to build everything from scratch and makes some crazy stuff i.e. antibiotics, etc. Highly recommend
Re:Where are all the animated SVGs? on Wednesday February 12, 2020 @03:15AM (#22306911)
> What about intermittently, like hover states? Still no, because a hover state exists to give confirmation that you've mousedowned on a clickable area -- so the hover needs to be an area-wide confirmation (like changing the button color). Animating an icon instead is too confusing, and animating it on top of a color change is too redundant and noisy.

I disagree with this. It can be very effective at signaling users that this is something you want to click. I think some people take animations too far but when used properly, they can be very effective.

I think we should encourage the right kind of animations more than discouraging animating at all. Especially with SVGs, they are more optimized and that's the right way to go about animating something on the web (not a gif that is like 1.5MB).

Only way really is to find someone who didn't firmware update yet and compare them before and after.
Re:Women now make up the majority of the U.S. labor force on Friday January 10, 2020 @02:31PM (#22014454)
I would assume if someone did gap analysis they would factor that in. It isn't about the wholistic are women making more or less than men. Rather it's the equality of are women who are the same role of men making the same. There shouldn't be a difference there.
After reading both of these statements, idk I feel the grey area is large enough that it didn't necessarily justify firing but also I don't blame Google for doing so. Ugh.

Really cool reading this when I just started 2 weeks ago and I was perusing the Video Architecture docs. It's cool to see how far Twitch has come :) thanks for sharing

Well you just print the form and mail it yourself. What's the issue? Seems relevant to me.
Re:The Problem of Thinking Too Much (2003) [pdf] on Tuesday May 14, 2019 @04:11PM (#19913407)
Yup agree. That and also understanding why you want A more than B which usually leads to understand why B doesn't give you those same things. At some point there is a balance of how much risk you are willing to put to get what you want.
Honestly I still find a lot of engineers don't know git properly. Like they know enough to commit and push but that's about it. It really helps to understand everything git has to offer.
This sounds fucking awesome and would definitely make me want to stay as an engineer.
Re:Ask HN: How do you handle code ownership? on Tuesday April 16, 2019 @02:09PM (#19675870)
I, too, am curious about this especially if your repository has started to become a mono-repo. My team has started owning most of the code reviews as more teams get added and contribute to their sections of the code base but it gets pretty hectic. It's not as simple as assigning certain folders as a group because lots of things are intertwined.

React is pretty high up there as well.
No but everyone is 99% sure it was related to killing Google+ which was announced not too long before and everyone who has used YouTube way back when knows they had to make a Google+ identity at one point to link em. HMMMMM....

Re:Redesigning GitHub Repository Page on Thursday February 28, 2019 @10:01PM (#19277605)
Please don't remove the last commit touching a file. I personally love know what parts of the code have been last updated at a glance.

> Why? I don’t know. Commits often touch files for completely arbitrary reasons, so the last commit tells you almost nothing. I can’t think of any case when somebody would need that particular information.

Way to shove your opinions on everyone else.

title is a bit click baity. It's not broken just poorly done. I agree with a lot of the thoughts though.
Re:Brave browser can inject headers in HTTP requests on Sunday February 10, 2019 @04:43PM (#19130235)
To be fair looking at the commit where it got merged, it was for a pre-release beta build for Android and release notes specifically say

> That is a very first beta version of Brave Rewards on Android. It is pointed on test network. DO NOT TRANSFER REAL MONEY!!! We use SafetyNet API for device attestation. There are grants available on first run. There are no grants on devices where attestation is failed(rooted devices, emulators). Auto-contribution time is set to 10 minutes, just for test purposes. Couple of verified pub on staging: duckduckgo.com 3zsistemi.si

Did it make it out? Here is the link

Re:Cancelling Dropbox Pro is hard on Friday January 25, 2019 @07:09PM (#19003821)
For someone who really wants to quit, it's annoying as hell. For someone who might want to stay, it helps retain them.

Which do you think the company cares about more?

The fact I have to scroll to figure out what a gigantic ass tile is referring to is infuriating. Especially since the tile design has literally nothing to do with the topic.
