Re:Ask HN: Mobile developers, how do you do testing? on Thursday May 22, 2014 @10:39AM (#7784059)
The company I'm currently working with purchased 30+ mobile devices.

I'm getting more and more convinced that this is the only way to guarantee that your site/app will work perfectly on all of these phones and tablets.

Some emulators can be a pita to install (iOS emulator only works on OS X, windows phone emulator needs Visual Studio on Windows 8 on hardware that supports HyperV) and they're still not 100% consistent with what will happen on the real device.

If you're gonna use an IDE then certainly check out phpStorm. I'm a big fan of vim but testing phpStorm made me doubt my ways.

SEEKING WORK: REMOTE Location: Belgium

PHP dev with 7+ years experience

I've done lots of projects as a freelance consultant in Zend Framework, CodeIgniter, CakePhp and tend to be up to speed in a new project in almost no time at all. Am finishing my first Yii project right now.

Early in my career I also ran my own psd to html conversion service, so I know a thing or two about front-end as well.

Heard about this app when it first launched, such an original idea.

Would you feel comfortable telling us the number of sales in 2013?

That's a great idea that I didn't think about. Thanks for your help.
The main project doesn't have a finished MVP yet, so hard to tell if it'll be lucrative or not.

It's a tool that helps affiliate marketeers better target their visitors, so I guess I'll have to start thinking about B2C vs B2B.

Ask HN: Weekend project got a lot of press, stupid not to put more work in?

I recently created a Facebook app that allows you to separate the comments from your family and friends. This was a typical sunday evening project for me and it is in a very rough form right now.The app got immediately picked up by The Huffington Post, Yahoo and lots of other news sites. Is it stupid that I don't wan't to allocate time (that I'm currently spending on my main project) for...

Re:Ask HN: How do you deal with being burnt out? on Thursday December 19, 2013 @06:29AM (#6933989)
I suffered from the same problem as you. I did some long thinking about what caused this issue and in my case it was fear of failure.

Fearing that whatever I'd launch would suck and that I just spent months working on something that would make no difference at all.

I'm working at a product that I believe in right now, and will force myself to launch within 3 months.

Yes, I would never describe Hungary as a chaotic country.

I see how all of those things would drastically alter your needed income, especially the cost of a car and inflation.

I'm certainly not well informed on the cost of rent here, but I guess that 300-400€ per month should get you a more than decent place to live and work.

I checked the blog on your profile and seems like you're working on some cool things and doing well for yourself, congrats on overcoming the odds like that.

Thanks for the insight Omar. I moved to Hungary, so not really a third world country. I've only been living here for ~3 months so my estimate might be of by a bit.

1) I don't really need a car since public transport here is ok. However I do own one. I cut my car costs to a minimum by changing from a sports car to a 10 year old Ford Focus.

2) I have an accountant that costs about 300 euros per month right now, is one of the bigger costs that I have right now. Am gonna try do take on most marketing tasks myself.

3) I never accounted for inflation so far. This might be something that I have to look into a bit more.

Could you share how you got the $60 number?

I recently relocated to a low income country and guestimated my needed hourly rate to be around $20 when doing a 30 hour work week.

Biggest differences that I could think of is that I bought my house mortgage free and that I have a partner that also makes $20 per hour.

Re:Lessons from 2 months of remote working on Friday November 29, 2013 @12:50PM (#6820301)
For me it did not feel very invasive, but I did buy an external webcam so I could get some distance between me and the camera.

It felt a bit like sitting at an office, people can look at me there as well.

Holding, since I only have 1 coin and selling it would make no noticeable difference to me right now.

I prefer holding and hoping for the 1/1000 chance that it ever might be worth $20000+

Re:Lessons from 2 months of remote working on Monday November 25, 2013 @02:00PM (#6796110)
Interesting read.

I recently moved to a country with a low cost of living whilst continuing my old webdevelopment role as part of a remote team.

Some things that we do:

  - daily short standup on google hangout
  - everyone is available on an instant messenger when working
  - every office/home office has a continuous webcam feed going on over google hangout
  - remote pairing (not the biggest myself)
Planning to do a writeup of my findings as soon as I pass the six months mark.
I have no experience with authoring books, but please do a follow up in a few months to let us go how it went.

Good luck!

Re:Startup Pack for Marketers on Friday November 08, 2013 @10:51AM (#6696768)
This pack contains a lot of valuable tools, well done to who ever put it together.

But please, indicate clearly that it is a lottery where 500 people will win.

Re:Poll: Music while coding: Yes/No and What Kind? on Tuesday October 29, 2013 @03:32PM (#6636841)
When working in a quiet environment I prefer not to listen to any music.

When working in an open floor office (which I hate when coding) then I fall back to white noise or ambient music in combination with a good noise cancelling headphone.

I second the removal of the "Powered by WebRTC" paragraph. You might wanna test a version of the page where the copy focusses a bit more on selling the benefits instead of on the features.

Looks like you're building a cool app, good luck!

Found a small typo "Each are is optional"

Good luck with the sales.
