Agreed. It has been consistent enough that I can make a pretty accurate guess each morning based on how I feel. With a consistent scale, I can work on the components (timing, duration, and other factors like alcohol, etc.) and I've made big improvements over the year.
Re:Giving up on smart rings on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @12:50PM (#49715292)
I like my Oura ring and find it one of the least fussy fitness trackers I've used. To me, the battery question is more about time between charging. I can travel for a week on a business trip without taking the charger, no problem. The sizing issue is real and as I dropped weight, the ring became loose and would fall off. I've added a small eva tab on the inside to increase friction and reduce risk until I buy the next version sized down.

The most important metric to me was the sleep score and related components. I've noticed my performance (mentally and physically) is tied to sleep in a huge way. I was skeptical that it would capture sleep metrics accurately, but after about a year of use, I can say without question that the number it presents as my sleep score is a very good proxy of how good I feel throughout the day.

My goal for this past year has been to focus on improving sleep health and for that, the ring has been a very useful tool.

So true. I once received an RFP template where our competitor had forgotten to clear their company (and even author) from the document details. I was glad because it helped us avoid a complete waste of time.

I enjoy this style of writing. Seemingly simple but packs a lot of meaning (like JoelOnSoftware back in the day).

Anyone else experiencing issues with CF more frequently lately? We appreciate the service provided, but we're averaging about 1 customer-impacting issue per week over the last few months. And we are considering alternatives. Today's incident was particularly bad, and you'd have no idea that NA was impacted from the status page.

First couple of tests from English to Spanish worked great. My first thought: the Babelfish from Hitchhiker's Guide is probably only a few years away. Pair this with WordLens on a mobile device and we start breaking down barriers.

Re:The Absurdity of LinkedIn on Wednesday April 30, 2014 @12:03PM (#7674213)
Unrelated to this post, I was trying to downgrade my account from premium to free today. It was surprisingly hard to find the path. I had to google it. Btw, it's under "Privacy and Settings", not under "Account" where you'd expect.

I have nothing against LinkedIn and find it helpful. It just struck me as something that was discussed in a design meeting- "how can we make cancellation hard to do?"

I like the clever use of css-based animations on the marketing site. The Invision feature tour (http://www.invisionapp.com/tour) does a great job of this as well. It probably goes unnoticed by the majority of visitors, but I think it communicates great design and attention to detail in a very subtle way. Hats off to the designers and marketing team that built a great site to get the message out.

No, we're all volunteers and we raise money for projects. What I mean is that we don't hand out money. We work alongside the community on each project.

Many of you may have already done this. But I never got around to it (Win7 isn't my primary dev box). It only took me 3 minutes and it probably ROI'd the first day.
Re:Is It Nuts to Give to the Poor Without Strings Attached? on Sunday August 18, 2013 @12:35AM (#6231664)
I've been to Kenya (village of Ngaamba) 4 times in the last 5 years on service trips through the 410Bridge organization. Their model relies on a village leadership council to prioritize need and decide how resources should be used. Then we come alongside and help. Our first trip focused on water. The second was infrastructure. The third was education. This past June it was staffing a medical clinic that was recently built. Now a community center has sprouted around the clinic and the trip next year will likely focus on micro-finance and entrepreneurship.

This isn't charity. It is partnering with a talented group of village leaders that understand the needs of the community far better than we could. There is accountability but it's driven locally and it's sustainable. They'll be able to carry the momentum they created long after we're gone.

There are plenty of models that work, and I'm glad there are so many helping out. But I've seen first-hand that allowing a community to pull the help they need works better than a foreign push model.

The Social Network isn't a grandiose documentary. If you just look at it as an entertaining story based loosely on people you know written by a talented guy (Aaron Sorkin), it's pretty enjoyable. You might actually like it. And the tech angle must be somewhat attractive if you're drawn to HN.
Ran across this after reading the (fantastic) GoCardless article here: https://gocardless.com/blog/building-a-large-angular-applica...
