Corporate dev job or startup tech support?

I'm at a crossroads with making a decision about my job search so I wanted to get the HN communities feedback.Would you personally rather take a job at a giant corporate consulting firm where you get trained to program in Java and become a software engineer, or take a much lower paying position at a mature startup (over 300 employees) with awesome culture doing product tech support with a...

Re:An Open Letter to New Teach for America Recruits on Tuesday July 02, 2013 @02:50PM (#5979948)
For the last few months I have been seriously considering applying to be a TFA teacher. But this article has definitely opened my eyes quite a bit.

The fact that even the kids themselves realize the lack of quality in the teachers should be a huge indicator that something isn't right.

Re:Web Design on Paper: The Tactile Design Kit on Monday July 01, 2013 @05:21PM (#5973649)
Super neat! And the downloads are in easily editable file format...You are awesome!

But seriously, thank you. This is going to make experience teaching the kids I'm mentoring so much better.

Re:Show HN: Help me build a better alternative to basecamp on Saturday June 29, 2013 @11:12PM (#5964551)
Pretty simple and easy to use. However as someone who uses teambox.com I find it lacking quite a bit. I use Team Box for features like the gant chart, other app integration, and team sharing.

I can definitely appreciate the work but I would need a better reason to switch.

Re:Want to learn to code? Start here. on Sunday March 31, 2013 @03:47PM (#5469939)
Thank you for the awesomeness you have infused your post with. I began on the very road you've suggested not to take about a year, never got anywhere with programming. Got a 9-5 after graduating then finally started doing what you've suggested...

Quit my cube job, got a technical internship, and code practically every breathing moment I'm not at work...friends and fun...what are those again? :P

Super smart on AA's part, with this and their sponsorship of things like Startup American they're weaving themselves into the startup and hacker community. At the end of the day they're going to get way more than $10,000 worth of ideas/apps/products.

Here's an entire thread on this from a few weeks ago:

Check this out: http://hackdesign.org/ They have a weekly set of "lessons" they send you and the reads are all really good.
Re:Revolutionary browser on Kickstarter - "PolyBrowser" on Thursday February 28, 2013 @11:29AM (#5299374)
The idea is cool and the browser looks like it would have some pretty neat features. But realistically I feel like there's already Google plugins and extensions that will let me do the majority of things shown in the video.

Not to bash on the product, but the logo also reminds me of and makes me feel like I'm using a spam filled search engine that's going to add yet another junk tool bar to the top of my browser.

Definitely love the idea of revolutionizing the web browser though.

Re:Visual Task Management for Individuals and Teams on Thursday February 28, 2013 @11:16AM (#5299308)
It's a cool looking alternative. But functionally I know it doesn't really meet my needs. The circles make the calendar view somewhat confusing to look at and I'm not a big fan of not being able to look at my tasks in order that they have to be completed within an individual group.

Cool idea just not very useful for me personally.

Really like the idea!Funny thing is I always advised people to do this when I worked at a web hosting company but somehow never actually got my own father to implement this in his business...time to practice what I once preached.

Thank you!

Very true, I had thought about this before but somehow let it slip my mind over the last few months.

Thanks for the insight!

Thank you for the advice, the thought of this being one of the last chances to really spend time with my father has definitely been a big factor in my decision.
Re:Ubuntu for Tablets trailer on Tuesday February 19, 2013 @11:04AM (#5244959)
I have to say it looks pretty darn sweet. Super clean and fluid...but then again it is a promo video.

I do want to know how well it'll play with other services and apps. The video chat part of the video looks awesome but if others have to be on Ubuntu to be able to take full advantage of it's feature I'll be disappointed.

Ask HN: Quitting my corporate job to help my dads failing small business

My father owns a small tile (floor tile) store that has been hurting every since this whole housing mess. He's finally decided to close the doors and find himself another project to work on.I've personally decided to quit my corporate job at a pretty sweet airline and go home to help him out...but I honestly have no clue what I'm going to do to help.Would love some feedback on two main...

There is far too much awesomeness on this thread...thank you for asking this question!
Re:Ask HN: Must watch startup videos/interviews? on Monday February 18, 2013 @04:43PM (#5240919)
The first one is probably not what your asking for but I'm putting in just in case. The second link is a really good though. Video interviews of the biggest names.

Re:Ask HN: How do you manage your bookmarks? on Friday February 15, 2013 @06:30PM (#5229416)
I use zootool, pretty easy and simple.

I'm going to have to try kippt that @eduadordm recommended, it looks sweet.

I'd be interested in reading about this as I might be going into teaching at-risk high school kids. Do you have anything written on this or a site I can visit?
Re:Need Caffeine? Find coffee places near you (my first hack) on Friday February 15, 2013 @11:15AM (#5226848)
Nice...I'm still working on my first hack.

How did you go about building it?

Re:Ask HN: List of hacking schools? on Sunday February 10, 2013 @10:42AM (#5196659)
Not complete but here's the list I've bookmarked:

Re:Help I don't want to be a programmer anymore on Thursday February 07, 2013 @09:24AM (#5182162)
I would agree with you to a certain extent. However I think with how popular startups are becoming and with the number of people wanting to become a "coder"...(which I will shamelessly include myself as trying to become.) were starting to see a shift towards respecting the ability of programmers more and more.

People are slowly starting to realize that "oh crap, these guys can turn the switch off on my "thing" if they wanted to." So people are starting to wake up a little bit.

This article is sweet! Sass is definitely looking more and more appealing.

Thanks for sharing!

Ah, very nice. Will definitely have play around with it.

Thank you!!!

Re:Star developer OUTSOURCED his JOB to China on Wednesday January 16, 2013 @10:30AM (#5067190)
I would say the amoral part would depend on the situation...like the whole contractor vs. employee conversation a few comments up.

But the VPN part, totally agree...you'd think that would be common sense.

Re:The Absolute Beginner's Guide to Sass on Wednesday January 16, 2013 @10:23AM (#5067154)
I haven't used Sass yet but it seems pretty cool. Does anyone know how it compares to Less?
As someone who once had the mindset of "I'll just find someone to build it for me" this post definitely hits some great points for anyone wanting to work on even a weekend project to consider.

Even learning some of the basics has made a huge difference in working with others for me. Being able to communicate and understand what a developer is talking about makes a world of difference when building something.
