I feel the same way about docker. This things just running containers and yet its a billion dollar company.
Example 1 affects your work how? Either way, intelligence agencies were doing that for a while. Multimodal surveillance is also essentially no different than what CIA or a good private eye might do in analog times: surveilling and tracking your movements, finances, your trash, those of your associates, etc. HFT is the same old trading as always, just faster, but the whole idea of yelling in the trading floor is just that: trading at the speed limit of sight and speech. Today it's based on latency of colocalized nodes rather than that of colocalized traders.
Most of what tech does is to just build wrappers to existing analog processes. Part of that is the genuine difficulty of trying to sell something new and different, vs an updated wrapper to an existing process for existing clients with a present day business need.
I really don't understand how the supermarket market works because you hear this about the margin and it makes sense on the face.
Then you go to the grocery stores and there's clearly tiers vs it actually being some competitive race to the bottom price. E.g. for a given item, I will tend to see 3 "classes" of price on it among grocery stores. Theres the cheapest grocers in town who flat out have it at the lowest price every single time. But then most of the grocery stores actually circle around the next tier up, where its another couple dollar markup thrown on that same item. Lastly there is a "money is no object" tier where its another couple dollars higher still. Given item could vary by $5-10 among local stores sometimes. The delta is absurd. No other market works like this with this much delta between local stores I've seen for the same product. I'm talking either name brand snacks, same label dairy producer jug of milk, the cosmic crisp apples when they reach our local area at the same time, etc, like the same exact item not just comparable classes.
How about the outlawed refrigerants?
The thing is, they already send engineers and technicians around constantly, for all the other issues among appliances and other hardware that cannot be dealt with remotely among the 1000 stores. The savings might not be so large when you consider the work of flashing the thermometer firmware could be done when the technician is routinely working for whatever reason, and now the nonzero threat of this being an attack vector if left open to the internet.
The attack surface for a security agency posing as telecom workers seems pretty wide open as it gets. Pretty routine to see these guys mucking around with random wiring and no one is going to try and call the telecom to confirm that's actually their worker.
>These and other methods are good reason to believe that AI can never be 100% contained, which gives me pause.
Easy, throw out the computer. Go analog if your work is so sensitive. Now you might say, "but what about the computers and all we use them for," but really reflect deeply over what exactly we are doing with these computers. I'll send an email to someone, no different than what I might have mailed them in years past. I'll pull up the calculator and do some math that I could have done by hand. I might write a function to ingest some data from one file and put it in another file in another format, work that used to be done with printed data and by hand.
The sobering thing with computers is that they really didn't change the world that much. We basically shoehorned them into the existing analog apparatus that controlls the world. Aside from the people who had jobs wrangling data among spreadsheets by hand, point to any company and its basically structurally exactly the same pre computers as it is today with three year leases to computers to all staff (aside from the existence of an IT department managing that gear I guess).
Why aren't you just blocking ads?
That's it? That's cheap for stuff these days. Especially when your market cap is lets see 2 trillion for tsmc. 5 trillion for NVIDIA. 1 trillion for micron. 1 trillion for Elon Musk. Intel might have to get a loan, "only" worth 350 billion.
Makes perfect sense. Laundered way to get westerner money into north korea with china looking at no fault.
You can't smoke in the bar but you can smoke outside the front of the bar and they don't care in open air patio areas generally. People smoke a lot casually outside too. I see a lot of people smoking golfing or skiing.
Be thankful you are alerted to the buying opportunity
That sort of thing did happen in the past though. Complicated engineering operations scaled up in months and years. Immediate post war era saw massive buildout of university engineering departments, more PhDs minted than ever before.
The fact we have so much latent demand and aren't getting these benefits right now is depressing. Where is our silico-industrial buildout? Why is our federal government cutting unversity research funding, and not expanding it to train more PhDs to run in demand fabs? We are being led by short thinking greedy assholes is why.
They already do that. Zero calorie sodas on grocery shelves now that specifically advertise they have supplemented them with protein, which glp-1 users seek much like a vampire to blood.
The most tenuous of the health concious vc efforts are the nonaloholic beers though. They are eating their own industry. Bars and beer industry does not exist off people getting 2 drinks and going home. They depend on the whales who drink 10+ beers in a sitting who subsidize all the 2 drink and goers. Alcoholics make bars and the beer industry work. It is an open secret. No one is going to buy a 12 rack of Athletic NA Beer and drink the entire thing in front of the bears on tv. No one is ripping a 6 pack of athletic in the parking lot before they go into work. Bars aren’t going to be able to stay open with everyone buying just 1-2 $12 Athletic pints.
The sort of food people are going for doesn’t even exist in the natural environment. Good luck finding so much refined sugar in one place or processed fat. Never mind the various preservatives that play the cognitive dissonance game of being a hostile environment for foreign microbiota but hopefully don’t do anything untoward to your own gut microbiota.
It isn’t just playing our systems, but hacking them and giving them inputs they would never usually see for far stronger effects than would be possible.
If you thought that was bad you have all sorts of drugs that affect libido negatively. In evolutionary terms that’s as good as a poison pill, reproductive fitness of zero.
These must be the phenotypes the robots in The Matrix were using as fuel cells.
The studies can’t really prescribe very intensive excerise either. I mean they have to take people where they are. They might have them on a treadmill for a 30 min walk and call that the excerise component of the study. No one is making them squat heavy to failure or clean and press anything. No one is running them on the track until they puke.
Thats like saying running the car does little for gas burning because you can fill up in 5 mins.
You have to actually kick your ass when you exercise. Most people don’t push that hard. Michael phelps ate what 6k calories a day or something crazy to maintain his prime form with the amount of caloric burn he was doing in training. If he continued to eat like he did in those crazy olypmpian training years, he’d be morbidly obese. If he ate like he does now in those years, he’d starve.
Cigs are still huge in the boozing scene.
Theres always a market for seedbox providers. Hyperscalers will always wear the white gloves and enable this market.
I think with the kirk issue it was because most of the time when someone is killed for political reasons, they were the right kind of divisive. Kennedy killed over civil rights for example. Kirk though might be one of the few cases where someone who was inflammatory and the wrong kind of divisive was killed. For that, you can expect some dancing in the streets. Expect fireworks and a week of partying whenever Trump kicks the bucket.
It is funny how this is the race that is framed to be the one to not loose. Never mind literally any other economic sector where we seem to be content with china eating our lunch. This is the sole industry where suddenly we care. The horror of us having to use outsourced AI when literally every other good and product in our life is already outsourced.
What sort of jobs are memory bandwidth bound that people are running? Will they actually see 10x speed improvement or hit some other real world bottleneck? Are these jobs "short" on the order of seconds or minutes or is the node being hammered for two weeks straight? I'm just curious about it.
512gb being more expensive than just two 256g is a little strange. You mean you can get the same exact total cluster ram but double the compute/storage nodes and save $700?
I mean its obviously just a fun gag tool the OP made to throw the tool stack on their resume. This post can land them a six figure job.
A book is a lot more of a sure bet than you maintaining a computer. We have ancient books today that have survived several civilization collapses.
Its just more work. If you have to verify from the sources anyhow, why spend effort reading the prompt to begin with? It just wastes your time and maybe even pollutes your subconscious with incorrect information.
The difference is back then we had the adage "don't believe everything you read online" that helped adjust our priors. Today, however, these companies are specifically marketing themselves as the source of ground truth. Your boss, or your school that a generation ago banned wikipedia, is now demanding you to use these tools and make the work dependent on them.
