As with most things, the truly terrible stuff is a minority of users. There are lots of areas on 4chan that are completely harmless and people just discussing mundane, boring stuff that they deem interesting.

Re:Oracle launches "a better alternative to CentOS"
on Wednesday July 18, 2012 @12:11PM (#4261417)
Or pragmatism borne out of watching Oracle be a slimy, evil steaming pile of douchebaggery that has only been recently surpassed by Apple in the corporate warmongering department. It's like CentOS, with a heaping helping of evil in every bite.
Re:How not using Internet Explorer put me out of touch and cost me dearly
on Friday July 13, 2012 @06:55PM (#4242427)
Do you have a better idea? Signature-based malware scanning is a joke and a half. I know CA"s can be gamed but unless you're proposing a better solution then don't complain.

Most people are going to donate less than $200 and the people that will donate will do it because they love the site, not because they're looking for swag. I've been reading PA since 2001 and aside from buying a t-shirt, have been entertained 3 times a week for over a decade for free, aside from the inherent value of my eyeballs. If I toss them some cash it will be because I love the site and because I want to support what I regard as a really awesome company, not because I demand they give me more stuff.

Sadly though now users have had years of poor memory management burned into their memories. Regardless of if it was FF or the addons, it's associated with FF now and will take time to shed.
Re:Charles Carreon Drops Bogus Lawsuit Against The Oatmeal Creator
on Tuesday July 03, 2012 @10:37PM (#4197335)
This case, had it gone to trial, would have had very grave repercussions for anyone who makes a living on the Internet. The fact that it is being dropped is (A) good news for the people that like Oatmeal and (B) good news for anyone who tries to make a dime online. Since I would wager the bulk of the people that frequent Hacker News fall into one or both of those camps, I would think that this story would be relevant.
Re:Kim Dotcom: Joe Biden Ordered the Megaupload Shutdown
on Tuesday July 03, 2012 @08:12PM (#4196948)
Because the MPAA and RIAA represent the owners and executives of the movie and record companies. "Hollywood" is also comprised of moneyed actors, musicians and artists that generally tend to lean to the left politically. There is definitely a difference between the two "camps"
Re:MVC is dead, it's time to MOVE on
on Monday July 02, 2012 @08:05PM (#4191745)
MVC doesn't fit cleanly into the world of webapps, but it's still a lot better than business logic in view code, or monolithic classes than handle all HTTP interaction, etc. I've seen some really terrible Model 1 code in my lifetime.

Also note, he has a pretty well established disdain for the entire VC-funded startup model, and Hacker News in general. If you expect him to be polite here, I think you have some misplaced expectations. Not that I'm excusing it, just not losing any sleep over it.
Re:Sortfolio lives

He's a multi-millionaire and was able to do it while acting this way. Therefore his previous experience is that acting like that will continue making him exceedingly wealthy. Getting angry about it won't do any good, you might as well just ignore him. I'm trying to say this in the most neutral, scientific way possible.

Re:I’m Done Developing for Twitter
on Friday June 29, 2012 @12:34PM (#4177510)
Twitter gained a lot of popularity on the back of a vibrant third party ecosystem. Now that they're established, it seems that the have deemed those same third party developers a threat and have turned on them. Just another example of why basing your company on someone else's platform is a bad idea.

Linux + webapps will be the only way to combat the locked-down, run-only-what-we-allow-and-give-us-30% mentality eventually. iOS has proven that regular customers can have their computing freedom trampled on as long as you give them pretty buttons to press while it's happening. Insert other assorted not-far-off-doomsday-conspiracies-here.

Re:US and Israel created Stuxnet, lost control of it
on Friday June 01, 2012 @09:13AM (#4053185)
I'm going to take the contrarian view here. If Iran had gotten to the point of enriching uranium to weapons-grade levels and Israel had done a pre-emptive strike, that would have gotten messy real fast. More messy than this. Disabling their centrifuges in a way where presumably no one died doesn't sound so bad to me considering the alternative. Again, just the contrarian viewpoint.

Re:No-cost desktop software development is dead on Windows 8
on Thursday May 24, 2012 @06:29PM (#4020936)
This really isn't a big deal for me. Mainly because I have no urge to develop for Windows now, nor will I have the urge to do so then. That makes things so much easier.
Re:Old Farts Know How to Code
on Thursday May 24, 2012 @01:17PM (#4019436)
As he points out, the industry likes young kids that can be paid less and worked harder. People that are old enough to know better are generally viewed as "cancerous" because they tell the younger people they don't have to throw away their youth to make other people rich. The people trying to get rich generally don't like that.

Re:HBO Decides It Still Isn't Difficult Enough To Watch HBO Shows
on Thursday April 19, 2012 @01:31PM (#3864154)
This. For all the hemming and hawing that is done about *AA's and digital delivery, it's got to make sense compared to their current budgets. Most astute people can see the ship leaving the harbor in terms of what the future looks like, but when your revenue is measured in billions, it's easier to just let things shake out and then see who wins than it is to put it on the line and potentially get burned betting the wrong way.
edit: I don't necessarily believe in this as a sound way of doing business, but I understand why they'd think this way.
Re:Twitter Introduces Innovators Patent Agreement
on Tuesday April 17, 2012 @02:26PM (#3854209)
No, I think it means that the patents will never end up in the hands of people that just plan to use them as weapons to extort other companies vs. their actual useful purpose, which is to protect innovators from having their hard work ripped off.
