Re:Patrick Stewart taught us what good men do with power on Monday November 02, 2026 @06:15AM (#50335394)
The Visitor (S4, E2) was nominated for a Hugo award. The main character in this story is an older version of Jake Sisko, played by Tony Todd.
Not quite, even by the second appearance of the Ferengi (The Battle, S1 E9), the Ferengi captain who tries to take revenge on Picard is eventually relieved of his command because "revenge is not profitable"

(I learned Lisp in the 90's and enjoyed it, but I still find it difficult to read.)

Re:Topologist's Map of the World on Sunday September 06, 2026 @09:41AM (#49586459)
There's another version of this where the islands are placed in a more natural way nearer to their continental neighbours:

https://kottke.org/22/12/the-topologists-map-of-the-world

On the front page, there is an example about optional typing, but it's not very clear how the typing is coming in:

  def fib(x) { x <= 2 ? 1 : fib(x - 1) + fib(x - 2) }

println "40th fibonacci number is ${fib(40)}"
Re:A better SQL in 11 lines of code on Sunday August 30, 2026 @07:25AM (#49497728)
ORMs based on the query object pattern don't hide the database, but make SQL more reusable/composable (e.g. SQLAlchemy, JOOQ, etc).

And at the end of that Bob says:

Re:Making Sense of Proof by Contradiction [pdf] on Saturday June 27, 2026 @07:29AM (#48697319)
I agree that the prime list example is really a constructive proof. But what about the sqrt(2) and log(2) examples?

Re:How to move a beluga across the world on Wednesday June 24, 2026 @06:27AM (#48657723)
Right at the end of the article:

> Why not release the belugas into the ocean?

> It's geopolitically difficult to return many belugas to their native waters, because many come from Russia, Lott said.

> Sending the Marineland belugas into the wild would have been "inhumane," Trites said. At least half of the animals were born into captivity, so they don't know how to hunt and wouldn't be accepted by the local beluga population.

> "The animals are so social that they can't survive on their own," he said.

Altair looks closer than Alpha-Centauri on this map, although it's actually 4 times as far (probably Z axis squashing).
Cantor is mentioned, but I'd also mention the idea that some infinities are equivalent (e.g. Integers and Rationals), but others are not (Rationals and Real numbers).

TNG introduced various civilisations that drive much of the plot in DS9.

Season 1: Ferengi

Season 4: Trill, Cardassians

Season 5: Bajorans

Also, Chief O'Brien and his wife Keiko who were recurring minor characters in TNG have more important roles in DS9.

Recently, I wondered what would happen if two of these systems were set up doing mutual pair programming ...
