Re:Show HN: I replaced tmux with sway workspaces on Sunday October 25, 2026 @12:07PM (#50233078)
I used tmux for about a decade and wrote quite a bit of automation around it, including tmux_super_fingers. But eventually I got frustrated with project sessions being limited to terminal windows. In particular, the browser tabs belonging to those projects were all mixed up in a single browser window.

So I wrote hop[1], which uses sway workspaces instead of tmux sessions. Terminals, editors, browsers, or any other windows really, can now all belong to the same project.

What I hadn't quite anticipated was how liberating it would feel to use the system's own tools - windows, workspaces, clipboard, scrollback, etc. - instead of tmux's alternatives. No more two layers of window management or competing keybindings.

On top of that, hop has proven to be a great fit for working in sandboxed environments. With tmux, sessions are tied to a tmux server running on a particular machine or inside a particular container. With hop, local, containerized or remote (or both) are all allied under one banner.

I realise most folks won't be able to use it - it requires rather extravagant tool choices (notably, sway) - but it's an interesting experiment nonetheless. And it's been working great for me for months now.

Re:Ask HN: What's your SSH terminal workflow like? on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @03:31PM (#50171493)
If all you want is clipboard integration over ssh, then, perhaps, kitty terminal might be enough.

hop does take it a notch further and allows to `hop open` images (or any binary really) from the remote machine such that they are opened by your host's xdg-open (as well as pasting images from host to remote).

Re:Ask HN: What's your SSH terminal workflow like? on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @04:54AM (#50163161)
One thing you might be missing is better integration between the local desktop and the remote environment. Things like persistent ssh connections, seamless clipboard sharing (including images), port forwarding and file path translation, so that working remotely feels almost indistinguishable from working locally.

I wrote a session manager[1] to handle all that. Linux/sway/kitty only though.

[1] https://github.com/artemave/hop

I actually migrated away from tmux because I became tired of using one set of keybindings to manage my terminal windows... and another set for every other os window. I also wanted gui apps being part of the session, not just terminals.

So claude and I grew the replacement over the course of a few months. Really happy with it. Never looked back.

> I have never been able to get copy-paste to work 100% of the time

Have you tried Kitty? Its remote clipboard integration works over SSH, including images. Might be worth a look.

Except starlink only works over Ukraine (including parts that are occupied). Long range drones into Russia are fully autonomous.

Show HN: Hop – project sessions beyond tmux

https://github.com/artemave/hop

hop started from a frustration: every project I work on accumulates browser tabs, while tmux sessions can only contain terminals. This really started getting out of hand once coding agents took hold, as more things are now going on at the same time.On top of that, I've started doing more work in sandboxed environments, and tmux isn't great at managing sessions across different environments - it...

Very nice! Nitpick: the Moon is tidally locked, so it should always face the Earth with the same side.

Aren't these just examples of sunk cost fallacy?
And I built e-commerce for my wife's micro-bakery https://thonon-les-pains.fr/ (most of it - like product and order management - is behind auth).

I don't think it's useful to anyone - not white label, not open source - but still funny :)

Re:Trying out Zed after more than a decade of Vim/Neovim on Saturday January 25, 2025 @08:33AM (#42821536)
Another (neo)vim+tmuxer chiming in. One major missing feature (compared to vscode) is opening file links from the terminal back in vim. It was such a major pain to me, so I ended up writing a tmux plugin to solve it. I thought you might find it useful - https://github.com/artemave/tmux_super_fingers

I have a better version (in the sense that it automatically names sessions after the current directory):

  if [ -z "$1" ]; then
    name="$(basename $PWD)"
    name="${name//\./-}"
  else
    name=$1
  fi

  tmux has -t "=$name" && tmux attach -t "$name" && exit

  tmux new-session -d -s "$name" -n shell

Hello, I am a seasoned full-stack web developer with over fifteen years of experience. Throughout my career, I've mainly gone back and forth between Rails and Node, with occasional forays into SPAs. I worked with a variety of clients - from small startups to enterprises.

I like to understand the business before coding. I like to translate this understanding into automated scenarios and tests. I prefer clear over clever. I like to deploy fast, small, and often. I like to know about problems in production before the users. I like to talk to the users. I like to talk to the business. I like to talk to the colleagues and pair programming. And, above all, I like coding - it's not just a job, it's a passion.

Years ago I switched from Firefox to Chrome and I was badly missing "translate on mouse hover" from Google Toolbar plug-in. Ended up writing it: https://github.com/artemave/translate_onhover/

I also spent years searching for a way to open file links in vim (all within a tmux session). Ended up writing it: https://github.com/artemave/tmux_super_fingers

I followed some advice about posting to HN which basically says: keep posting. I also assumed that it's unlikely that the same people would read it, as new posts fade away so quickly. That was clearly the wrong assumption. Apologies for all that, I will post no more.

Ah. I was looking in the pinned rules post.
Does my ctrl-f not work? I can't find this line in the rules. But also there are tons of exceptions to that. I can see some right now.
