In the age of Apple Silicon, what's options are there for native Linux?

Hey everyone,I'm looking for a new laptop for programming work.I would prefer to use native Linux, but it seems like nothing comes close to Apple Silicon for battery life, portability and performance.Which brings me to my question, should I suck it up and buy Apple Silicon, try Asahi Linux, or go with an x86 Dell, Thinkpad, etc.

I use this to create gifs and mp4 for game development - Absolutely killer feature set and decent encoding options.

Hey cool, I'm building a game inspired by Sokoban where you're tasked with destroying evidence and cleaning up any trace of crime - It's called Hazard Pay.

It started as a game jam entry for Ludum Dare, but after the great feedback I decided it was simple enough to go for a full release.

Re:Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (April 2024) on Monday April 01, 2024 @06:07PM (#39899982)
I'm working on a puzzle game that started as a Ludum Dare (gamejam) submission - A demo will be out in the coming weeks.

Hazard Pay is a dark puzzler about destroying evidence and leaving no trace - With Sokoban-like mechanics, combine items in unique ways to clean up each lab and load the truck with the remains.

Re:VCard and RSS as an alternative to social media on Saturday March 23, 2024 @11:49AM (#39800764)
A few years ago I made QCard to solve the problem of quickly sharing info at meetups and conferences - It's nothing but a convenience wrapper around VCard - Everything runs in the browser.

Try it out: https://qcard.link

Building your own Boids simulation wonderful and I can highly recommend it - It's incredible how simple it emulates life so convincingly.
"In the morning when thou risest unwillingly, let this thought be present,—I am rising to the work of a human being. Why then am I dissatisfied if I am going to do the things for which I exist and for which I was brought into the world? Or have I been made for this, to lie in the bed-clothes and keep myself warm?—But this is more pleasant.—Dost thou exist then to take thy pleasure, and not at all for action or exertion? Dost thou not see the little plants, the little birds, the ants, the spiders, the bees working together to put in order their several parts of the universe? And art thou unwilling to do the work of a human being, and dost thou not make haste to do that which, is according to thy nature?"
Re:Ask HN: Where do you host your own-domain email? on Thursday November 23, 2023 @06:32AM (#38391684)
I've been using Tutanota for years, but now I'm looking to migrate due to the missing IMAP/POP3 Bridge, inability to easily export all emails and slow search performance - Old emails essentially become irretrievable.

Imagine a device that could do contactless "tap and pay" transactions, be weather resistant, virtually indestructible, fit inside a small pocket and not require a battery..

In all seriousness if the credit/debit card was introduced after smartphone wallets, we would all be moving in that direction

Exactly, I hacked this together to produce GeoJSON from the Garmin Instinct.

Garmin Instinct. Optional Bluetooth, stores data locally and is accessible via USB.
Re:Ask HN: How do you deal with TOTP 2-factor auth? on Tuesday September 12, 2023 @03:28AM (#37477835)
I use andOTP[0] which auto-exports an encrypted backup to a local folder, which is then synced with Syncthing[1] to my NAS.

It's seamless and doesn't need an internet connection.

- Forge

A tiling window manager, It makes working with an ultrawide more practical

I made Qcard which makes solves a similar problem using client-side JS to decode the standard VCard format - It's free and open source.

No, it's not completely ignored.

Yeah, for people living a de-googled life - For example, people running LineageOS or GrapheneOS.

I had the same concern, this article perfectly captures the problem and gives perspective to the solution Tailwind provides - Thanks for sharing!
Re:Nokia launches DIY repairable budget Android phone on Sunday February 26, 2023 @02:41AM (#34943822)
Checkout the Asus Zenfone 8, it's smaller, has 3mm jack, and supports LineageOS.

Very impressive! I appreciate all the effort that has clearly gone into the documentation - I'm going to try this with the Strong Lifts program.

Have you considered FDroid for distribution as you're using the AGPL license? [0]

This is really inventive, great execution.

Do you have a write up or src hosted anywhere?

Absolutely agree, love cast iron.

One contra point, Titanium when hiking functions well if you're bringing a gas cooker.

However, I will never cook with Titanium over a fire again - You can literally burn soup.

Okay, this is interesting.

My WhatsApp profile has been dormant for almost 2 years, before uninstalling (2020) the app, like you, I changed my profile picture to the Signal logo and wrote a similar about section.

My friend just checked my profile, the profile photo was shown briefly, before being removed - The about section is also blank.

Still waiting for Display Port MST support over USB-C to enable monitor daisy chaining.
I have LineageOS without any Google services, on a Asus Zenfone 8.

Recent versions of N26 work fine.

It's the perfect phone, with an aux port too!
