I would say the public trust is not so much dying as actively being killed.

Also the word mainstream has lost its meaning. If that term is to apply based on audience size, sites like InfoWars were bigger than some of the traditional outlets.

The idea of leaving "mainstream" outlets to seek truth on sites like InfoWars is more about people just wanting to hear their biases and not really interested in news per se.

I haven't read this particular book but enjoyed "The Theory that would not die"[1] which also details the historic conflict between frequentists and the bayesian statisticians. Not sure which is the better book but "The Theory..." has a lot more Goodreads ratings than this one.

Oh wow. So I recently built something similar for my own needs[0]. It's strictly mobile right now, but it serves my needs to get reminders on when things are about to go bad. Will have to dig into this app to see if I can integrate it

Interestingly Google today does support (a subset of) Microdata embedded in HTML within Gmail, Google Assistant and Search. Much simpler than the complex constructs of the Semantic Web as originally conceived though.
Re:Ready, Set, Multi-Platform on Friday September 03, 2021 @10:45AM (#28404900)
I transitioned a side project from native to React Native and it was not a great story (2 years ago at least). Since my app used some native views, and there wasn't enough documentation or community behind that, every new RN version would take nights of my life in patching and getting the app to recompile.

Ultimately, I moved to Flutter and have loved the experience since (https://devbots.ai/jax.html). The main reason I was trying to use native views is because I wanted to draw some custom components (custom drawing commands + animations) but there wasn't a good story around that in RN, but Flutter gives you a canvas for such efforts, with no penalty caused by the native/JS bridge.

For mobile side projects at least I have settled on Flutter. Web is still a disappointing story in Flutter though, so its back to React for now.

I am really excited for web support! My own plans for making web-apps now will probably lean towards Flutter and web-sites towards HTML/CSS.
Re:Notable – A Markdown-based note-taking app on Saturday July 18, 2020 @03:43PM (#23884208)
There was an interesting point during Notable's development when the project went from an open source one to closed source [1]. While I get open source developers should be paid for the work, I am not sure how I feel about OSS projects getting some attention and then closing source

Re:SapphireDb – Open-Source Alternative to Firebase on Wednesday January 15, 2020 @11:23AM (#22055561)
Firebase is a collection of services. This seems to be an alternative to the Firebase Realtime Database specifically
Will this now now third party services will be able to send rich messages to a phone number? This could be a good or a bad thing. I occasionally get random messages from my carrier or ad spammers, not looking forward to them including images or media in those.

On the flip side, if you are a startup, you would be able to send rich messages to your clients without having to integrate Facebook messenger, Whatsapp etc etc

Re:Run JavaScript on Cloudflare with Workers on Tuesday March 13, 2018 @02:03PM (#16578225)
How does this compare with running AWS Lambda's on CloudFront?

https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonCloudFront/latest/Develope...

Stories like this get a lot of people here (including myself) really angry with a lot of people even asking for places to donate to support fighting these trolls.

In today's world of decentralized currencies and programmable wallets can there be a fund that people like us can donate to and that programmatically gets unlocked when the majority of the community agrees that a case is one of patent trolling.

Could there be a "proof of troll" ?

Re:In 2017, VR Headset Shipments for Most Top Brands Went Down on Thursday February 15, 2018 @06:55PM (#16388848)
Popping a mobile phone into a VR headset is a pain, as is all the cables on the high end (desktop) VR platforms. I am curious how Oculus Go[1], launching soon changes the game (if it does). At the very least, it opens the market to a lot of iOS users. Thoughts?

[1] https://www.oculus.com/go/

It seems more a marketing strategy than a real belief in user privacy. For example, see the latest rejection of ad-blocking VPN apps from the App Store https://9to5mac.com/2017/07/15/apple-reportedly-shifts-app-s...

Re:The WhatsApp suicide on Saturday October 29, 2016 @01:49PM (#12825231)
Has an Indian male, reading about this stuff is both extremely horrifying and sadly familiar. What are the organizations and charities who are doing the best work to change this situation? I'd like to actively help.
Honestly, I do think this is a good thing. The problem I have with VR isn't just the number of apps but the quality and differences in experiences (I am not much of a gamer and the stores are 90% games. Would love to see more 'apps').

DayDream could be a lot of people's first introduction to VR and so having a smaller library of high quality content for a few months before opening the floodgates may not be a bad idea.

Re:Chromecast + NFC on Wednesday October 14, 2015 @10:04AM (#10386644)
Considering the Chromecast is plugged behind the TV, wouldn't it be really awkward to get to to tap on it?

Btw, Google has a series of APIs called Nearby (https://developers.google.com/nearby/) that are all about connecting to nearby devices but NFC doesn't seem the right answer here.

Re:Winklevoss Twins’ Bitcoin Exchange on Thursday October 08, 2015 @09:46AM (#10352689)
From Tyler Winklevoss's answer on the Product Hunt page for Gemini: "Gemini is a New York state limited liability trust company, we did not apply for or have a BitLicense which is a much lower standard. As a limited liability trust company we are a fiduciary, which allows us to accept both individual and institutional customers under New York Banking Law (unlike the BitLicense, which does not convey such fiduciary powers). In short, we can work with both Main Street and Wall Street."
