Re:Ask HN: What is your default notes app? on Thursday January 16, 2025 @03:47PM (#42730696)
I've finally found a good setup for me: Obsidian syncing to cloudflare R2. The notes are not encrypted in cloudflare (which I would prefer) - that's next on my list.

Interesting how you described the scenario quite accurately that is currently playing out and the current tech company of 5-8 years I am at.
Re:Can you effectively work with leadership you don't trust? on Friday October 25, 2024 @02:28PM (#41948132)
It's so prevalent. I am dealing with it. Find the good people and stick with them!
Re:What App to Use for Notes? on Wednesday July 24, 2024 @02:21PM (#41060066)
I love Obsidian my only problem is syncing things from iOS - haven't been able to find a solution.
Perhaps the low hanging fruits in this era of technology/software landscape have been poached. However, I can find hundreds of problems just in the realm of software architecture and infrastructure management that need to be addressed and improved.

Spend a decade in any industry and you will see the gaps more clearly.

Re:Ask HN: What Got You into CS? on Tuesday January 03, 2023 @02:33PM (#34236763)
Hacking Diablo II (making bots and such) and phpBB modding. I originally wanted to go into Civil Engineering but applied too late and the CS department accepted me.
Hi Peter, I'm a Canadian on a TN visa (going on second renewal). My partner and I recently got engaged (She is a dual Canadian/USA citizen). We are thinking of staying in the US for the foreseeable future. What's the best way to go about this so that I can get permanent residency? Should I see if my current company is willing to go through the GC process for me or should we go through my partner? Thanks for doing these threads!
Re:Ask HN: What Are You Learning? on Friday June 25, 2021 @12:10PM (#27632606)
iOS development. I've been backend/infrastucture for a while now and want to be more well rounded.
This hits hard. I entered a new position being passive/humble and now it's difficult to turn it around

This is inspiring. I am going spin one up and also look into contributing to your source code.

Re:Ask HN: What are some resources to improve speaking skills? on Thursday October 31, 2019 @09:39PM (#21415580)
I recently signed up for a local improv 101. It's fun and super difficult coming from someone who is not quick on their feet. I've got a lot to learn. Any tips for someone who is introverted and not super witty?

I was debating between improv and toastmasters and picked improv since I thought it would be more fun.

Damn it you speak my language.
Re:Ask HN: Will getting a PhD lead to a more interesting life? on Monday September 30, 2019 @06:25PM (#21120244)
What do you think a Civil, Mechanical, Industrial engineer does? Do you think a Civil Engineer is going around re-working how buildings are designed?
Re:Ask HN: If you were to switch career, what would you do? on Thursday September 26, 2019 @05:42PM (#21085872)
Painter, sculpture, architect (residential homes), musician...

I love being a software engineer but I would love it more if I didn't have to rely on it for paying living expenses.

Re:How Fast can A Single Instance of Redis be? on Tuesday June 18, 2019 @04:49PM (#20218261)
We've been running into the issue where our redis instance(s) randomly dies. I haven't been able to pin point the problem (nodejs+redis). Would love to hear your thoughts on some gotchas to look out for.
This. Also, I'd like to add: being kind to yourself.
