News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

I switched to Ubuntu One. It has 5GB free and a decent android client.
Other than the fonts looking a bit jagged on Win7/Chrome the design looks amazing.

I'm sure Deutsche Bank were less enamoured with it.

Re:Your Phone Loses Value Pretty Fast (Unless It's an iPhone) on Wednesday February 08, 2012 @01:34PM (#3567783)
There's newer firmware updates but they won't release them. Perhaps other carriers have newer updates for my phone but i'm on a contract.
Re:Your Phone Loses Value Pretty Fast (Unless It's an iPhone) on Wednesday February 08, 2012 @01:20PM (#3567714)
Unsurprising since phones are ditched by carriers after they're sold (orphaned android user).
Re:Lake Vostok Reached on Wednesday February 08, 2012 @01:16PM (#3567690)
It's Antarctica and it's protected by international treaty. Not sure why Russia were even allowed to do this.
Re:Richard Stallman's Computer Setup on Saturday February 04, 2012 @08:51PM (#3553021)
The bios seemed to be his only sticking point about not using other hardware. Maybe something like coreboot might fill that need now?
Re:Please tell us what features you'd like in news.ycombinator on Saturday February 04, 2012 @03:44PM (#3552062)
Please add a submit button to the search box at the bottom of the site. I can't use the search function on Android (Opera) and less importantly, w3m.
Re:Co-Founder of Stripe [YC] Interviewed in Depth (Audio) on Saturday February 04, 2012 @03:07PM (#3551938)
That limerick accent is fading fast:) Top it up by watching some Rubberbandits. Loved the interview.
Re:Richard Stallman's Computer Setup on Saturday February 04, 2012 @12:45PM (#3551521)
He runs a modern full featured gnu/linux distribution like a lot of people, just rarely boots into the desktop.
Eliminating needless sites like yfrog and twitpic?
Re:If Dropbox Used GitHub’s Pricing Plan on Tuesday July 19, 2011 @07:46PM (#2783611)
More private repos with the paid plans would definitely keep me paying and might convince others to pay.
Re:Samsung installs keylogger on its laptop computers on Wednesday March 30, 2011 @04:05PM (#2388962)

Re:Poll: Which web browser do you use? on Friday January 14, 2011 @08:17PM (#2106135)
Firefox feels prehistoric in many ways compared to chrome but I won't switch until they copy the awesomebar verbatim. It's perfect.
Re:How to build an 8x8x8 LED cube on Tuesday January 04, 2011 @04:08AM (#2066384)
Yes amazing, I used to have Instructables in my rss reader but had to remove it due to the articles being totally unreadable.
Re:Write your passwords down on Friday December 17, 2010 @12:34PM (#2016927)
I read a story on HN a while back about a guy who used an algorithm to generate his passwords. Don't have the link but something like combining easy to remember bits of personal information. e.g mother's name, kids birthday, maybe changing the case of these. Also adding something site specific like the last three letters of the url backwards. It's easy to remember passwords this way but if one gets out they're all vulnerable if someone looks closely.
Re:Anonymous Ousted from Twitter and Facebook on Wednesday December 08, 2010 @07:44PM (#1985441)
I suppose the DDOS cannon will be aimed at twitter and facebook next then.

Re:Linux Mint 9 Released on Monday May 17, 2010 @09:27AM (#1354269)
seems to be a distro derived from ubuntu with polished ui and proprietary codecs and drivers preinstalled
Yeah, it would be nice if they had an open server that allowed you to sign up and check it out. There's nothing stopping anybody from setting one up though.

subversion hosting with bug tracking and wikis and the like. nicely integrated into netbeans too.
Re:Sugru - hack things better on Friday December 04, 2009 @10:03AM (#976429)
i think I saw somewhere that it was about 7 GBP for a pack. not too bad. I really like the look of this stuff, can already think of loads of uses, including making a nice little stand for my ipod touch to have beside my computer. Could become as ubiquitous as blu-tack. also sugru (súgradh) is the Irish word for 'play'.
Re:Arduino pop3 email checker on Thursday November 12, 2009 @12:53PM (#938290)
I recommend http://www.adafruit.com I bought the usb boarduino kit for $25 which is the cheapest way to get into arduino if you already have a breadboard and a soldering iron. Great tutorials on the adafruit site too.

Re:Ask HN: How do you record your thoughts? on Tuesday August 04, 2009 @07:33AM (#741005)
