Re:In praise of blowing up your life on Monday June 12, 2023 @10:11PM (#36304253)
Before you take Sasha Chapin's advice to blow up your life seriously, ask yourself whether you envy the life he's living.

> My existence really started getting good when I started blowing up my life more regularly, with a substantial eruption every couple of years. I quit my job and moved to Thailand without doing any research about the country, figuring that I could be a bartender again somewhere if it all went south. That ended up becoming the material for my first book. My current professional chapter began when I said “fuck it” to journalism when I couldn’t take the constant ethical compromises and the bullshit of pretending to care about the news cycle. After some flailing, I now make a lot more money and am a lot happier. Blowing up my first marriage was the most difficult one of all, but it was an obviously correct decision, for which my ex-wife later thanked me—we were locked in a pattern that was hurting both of us, and if one of us didn’t walk away, we would’ve eventually been one of those unhappy old couples who constantly radiate bitterness.

What does China know about COVID-19 that the rest of us do not?

Why put in place such a severe policy of forced internment, in response to very few cases, when cheap and plentiful vaccines are available?

(Never mind that mRNA vaccines have never been approved for use in China, which is mind-boggling, given that they're proven to be safe and effective for preventing serious illness or death from COVID-19.)

They're too slippery to go without a case.
> And my money is that they'll use whatever volume they free up to mindlessly make the phone thinner.

Thinner is absolutely better. The ergonomics and lightness of the iPhones 6 through 8 are far superior to the thick and heavy iPhones Pro of today. Without Jony Ive at the design helm to push the "single slab of glass" vision, the thickness and weight has been gradually creeping upward for years now to cram in more batteries and hardware. A return to thin iPhones would be a good thing.

Wow. How has the battery in your MacBook Pro not died after 12 years?

1) This looks like a ripoff of https://wiki.tripsit.me/wiki/Main_Page

2) Whatever happened to taking a bunch of hard drugs with your friends and seeing what happens? Kids these days with their "trip sitters" and "safe spaces" and "Psilocybin Community & Education" hubs.

A lot of Berkshire Hathaway's businesses sell overpriced sugar or cheap junk.

I'm surprised that AirPods didn't support automatic device switching until now.

I assumed a lot of people with AirPods would want to switch the audio seamlessly between their iPhone and an iPad or Mac.

Any idea why it took so long to ship this feature?

Great to finally see some competition in this space.

Like a lot of other lesser-known industries, private equity has consolidated all the top self-storage software management solutions.

SpareFoot acquired SiteLink[1]. The combined SpareFoot and SiteLink were acquired by Cove Hill Partners[2], a private equity firm founded in 2017, and merged with storeEDGE[3], a third company, to form Storable[4], the company behind SiteLink, storEDGE, and SpareFoot. Storable just acquired Easy Storage Solutions[5], a fourth company, a few months ago. SpareFoot, SiteLink, storEDGE, and Easy Storage Solutions are now all the same company.

Likely, a smaller phone in the form factor of the (now discontinued) iPhone SE.
Do browsers not have the concept of Background App Refresh when the tab is not active or visible? Do popular apps like Gmail or Slack not support this?
Are you sure it wasn't the apps you were running?
Can I limit resources per tab?

I'd like to give Slack 1GB of memory and one processor core so I don't have it maxing out my CPU and cache every day.

Plus, iOS 12 is going to significantly improve performance on all devices as far back as the iPhone 5S.

When was the last time a major Android update made five-year-old devices faster?

Does this fix the plethora of UI bugs introduced by iOS 11? By comparison, the final release of iOS 10 was very stable.
Re:Critics say WeWork is an overvalued real-estate play on Thursday October 19, 2017 @01:24PM (#15509756)
Are their growth rates comparable?
You don't need more than 8GB of memory. I doubt anyone could notice a difference in real world performance between 8GB and 16GB.

The PCIe-based SSD in the Macbook Pro is so fast that virtual memory is equivalent to RAM for all practical purposes.

Elon Musk's businesses have benefited from billions in federal and state government subsidies and low-interest loan programs over the years.

He's taking huge risks because other people are footing the bill.

Minor nitpick: n^2 isn't the correct factor to describe hyperscale networks. It's much slower, probably n x log n.
Re:The most cited deep learning papers on Thursday February 16, 2017 @08:02AM (#13659547)
Classic papers can be worth reading but it's still useful to know what's trending.

Even a simple algorithm would be effective: the number of citations for each paper decayed by the age of the paper in years.

Re:Trump is turning Elon Musk into a crony capitalist on Saturday February 11, 2017 @11:14AM (#13623193)
What else is new? Elon Musk's businesses have benefited from billions in federal and state government subsidies and low-interest loan programs over the years.

The American taxpayer has been backing Musk since long before the current president was on the scene.

Tesla batteries only show very little degradation because their capacity is limited by software[1]. You can "increase" your battery capacity by ordering a $9,000 software update.

That's $10 million per employee (at a $20B valuation). That's not a lot of when you consider they're building a product that will book billions of dollars in advertising revenue.
You want to grow your startup? It's much easier when you Make Something People Want.

Seriously? The current state of affairs is nothing compared to the socialist/communist nightmares of the twentieth century. It's not even close.
