Re:Addressing Spotify’s Claims on Friday March 15, 2019 @09:47AM (#19399636)
30 days would be fine - but since it’s 30 days after the end of the month, it ends up being more along the lines of 45-60 days after the user has been actively using the service (and thus costing us money).
Re:Addressing Spotify’s Claims on Friday March 15, 2019 @08:57AM (#19399228)
As an app developer, I wouldn't care about the 30% cut if apple's In-App Purchase SDK was up to par with other payment processors.

For example - as a developer I can't cancel subscriptions on a user's behalf, even if they've requested us to cancel it multiple times, nor can I refund a user's subscription, give them discounts/free months for their troubles/etc. The thing is, when a user reaches out to Apple to request a refund (since we can't do it on their behalf), and Apple denies the refund, we get the bad review.

On top of all of that, Apple does not pay out their developers until 30 days after the end of the month. That means that we can be waiting for 60(!) days before we receive revenue from an active, paid, subscription. They don't even let us know how much we will get paid for the month until a week before payments are dispatched.

Re:AWS Fargate Price Reduction on Tuesday January 08, 2019 @10:59AM (#18856459)
Fargate definitely takes some time to figure out. It took a while for us to realize that we needed to bump up our instance sizes because the default instance was a t2.micro.

However, now that we got it configured properly (took about 6 hours over the span of 3 days to catch the issues), we flawlessly serve 11M API requests/day without a problem. We were running these on DO boxes, moved it over to elastic beanstalk which caused more problems than it was worth, and finally landed on Fargate.

Tried EKS, but it was a bit more cumbersome than we would have liked for a K8s service. (We run another product of similar scale on K8s via GKE).

If you're looking for something closer to Heroku than K8s, then Fargate is decent option.

Would love an early access code :) Email in Bio

Re:Early Decision on Thursday September 20, 2018 @02:47PM (#18034620)
Well then that would just be silly. A large number of YC companies don't get in the first few times they apply with an idea. Getting rejected from YC doesn't mean your startup isn't viable - it may just mean it's not ready for investment (from them) yet.
Re:Early Decision on Thursday September 20, 2018 @02:36PM (#18034551)

If you’re accepted, you will be early accepted into the Summer 2019 batch which begins in June. If you’re not accepted, you can apply again during the regular Summer 2019 application cycle which begins in March.
I assume that means you'll find out at the same time as everyone else - so yes, "Early Rejection"
Great to know! Here's to hoping they pay out the entire amount I'm owed.

Thanks, Guys!

I've had friends that have lost $100k+ due to Adsense terminations on legitimate sites. I've personally lost about $10k. We'll see how much I actually get paid out from this class action (I think I read that they cap it at $5k)
The update to the post can be found here: http://www.askamanager.org/2016/10/update-a-coworker-stole-m...

TLDR: Guy gets his job back and a generous raise (almost double his paycheck) after getting fired and threatening legal action.

30 hashes a second is what you'd likely see on mid-range laptops. You can test your machine on CoinHive (https://coinhive.com/)

My fully maxed out 2017 rMBP can only do 50-60h/s at full speed with all threads. Most people don't have a machine nearly as powerful as mine.

I had a run-in with CoinHive this weekend so I did a bit of research.

Most modern computers can do about 30/h a second. Coinhive currently pays out 0.00009030 XMR ($0.02 USD) per 1M hashes.

For a 10 second pause, they'd mine 300 hashes (about $0.000006 USD). To make $1 USD, they'd need to have ~166,666.66 people connect to their in store WIFI.

Re:The Tenacity of Tech Recruiters on Thursday March 09, 2017 @06:46PM (#13834978)
Well that's not necessarily true. From one of your other submissions, you stated "...I am very bad at interviewing..."

So the problem seems more of, "Hiring Mangers think I'm unqualified" rather than "There aren't enough jobs for qualified developers"

Hiring an unqualified developer is MUCH worse than not hiring a developer at all. It's wasted time and money for the company. I've been on both sides of the table so if you want some feedback on your resume/interviewing skills feel free to shoot me an email.

Re:Introducing React Navigation for React Native on Thursday January 26, 2017 @08:39PM (#13497060)
It is one of the most enjoyable iOS Development experiences I've ever had. Just the yesterday, I was thinking "I'd never want to try and make layouts programmatically with swift ever again"

Now, I wouldn't say that I'd go 100% of the way with react native, but so far I can say I'll be using it for at least 80% of my layouts/logic.

Re:Linode Security Advisory on Friday February 19, 2016 @05:14PM (#11137075)
Linode dropping the ball with PagerDuty is huge.

I can't even begin to imagine how much money your customers could lose if PagerDuty infrastructure went down.

They are, hands down, my favorite company at the moment. Been a loyal customer of them for about a year now. One of the few companies I will go out of my way to recommend to people.
Re:Ask HN: How do you handle customer support on your site? on Sunday November 29, 2015 @10:09PM (#10647420)
1) Sign up for intercom.io. It's genuinely the best customer support tool I've used.

2) Get the app and get a notification for every user's question. Try to answer them the second you see it.

3) Don't hire a dedicated customer support person. Stay close to your customers and build a relationship.

4) Watch this talk by Patrick Collison from Stripe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnllRegL_NI

5) Build out an FAQ

6) Make sure your customers are happy.

Re:Y Combinator rejection reasons on Monday April 20, 2015 @12:49AM (#9406237)
We applied (and interviewed!) for YC last season. We didn't get in, but they were dead on about the issues with our business.

Since then, we've addressed the issue and are continuing to move forward.

Remember, not getting into YC isn't the end - and YC does make mistakes. Just remember to hear their reasons out and really consider what they have to say. They're all brilliant people and have an uncanny ability to unravel your business in less than 10 minutes.

Build, fail, listen, learn, keep building, keep listening, keep learning, keep moving.

Re:Tea with strangers on Saturday April 18, 2015 @04:56PM (#9400987)
Last weekend, I went to an event hosted by Tea With Strangers called "Sunshine with Strangers"

One of my favorite experiences ever. I've lived in NY my whole life, and that was the first time it truly felt like a community. It was over 100 people, and everyone was just open to meeting new people.

10/10 would go again.

(P.S., The creator, Ankit, is awesome.)

I'm looking to work at a great company in New York City that allows me to build amazing products while allowing me the flexibility to complete my degree.

I have a strong focus in Web Security and Web Development. I have worked at and built startups that are constantly used by thousands of people.

How do you find summer internships?

I'm a freshman computer science student in New York and I'm trying to find myself an internship (paid or unpaid - doesn't matter).I have background in web development but can pretty much handle anything thats thrown at me.I have no clue about how to approach or find startups in NYC for internships. I'm not looking for a huge company like google or facebook - in fact I'd prefer a small startup...

Keen seems awesome, except I have a high volume startup with no funding and no revenue right now. We'd blow past the 50k event/month within the first few days for sure.

I really wish there was a more affordable way to do this. Though, I guess you get what you pay for.

It actually reminds me of Mixpanel. Both are too expensive for my liking :(
