I didn't think anyone would be interested in the emails anymore. It's back up https://1drv.ms/t/s!AJBqmKEOgVTliB0

No new comments in a few hours and the post is now buried. Link to mails is now dead.

Thank you for your suggestions.

Have been offering a refund from day 1 (months back) and the person just keeps finding more problems/feature requests but won't take their money back.

We rarely get these, most users love our apps and repeatedly tell us our customer support is exceptional. I will consider the auto responder thank you.

Re:Is the customer always right? on Thursday July 07, 2016 @06:07AM (#12048437)
Alright fair. But this is after offering refunds and explaining our position repeatedly. Still not ok?

Is the customer always right?

After this email exchange I couldn’t really sleep last night. I am posting this here for advice from people more experienced than me, on how to deal with customers who just don’t seem to be ok with whatever you do. Maybe I was in the wrong and it is me who doesn’t get it. Please share suggestions, opinions, whatever. In no way is this an attack/vendetta thing on the person/company and I have...

Yes, that is one of the reasons I haven't put the form anyone can just fill it with gibberish just to get to the download. But I have asked a few people who have compulsory forms and all of them say that people fill them in and mostly accurately. So I don't know its confusing.

The note sounds like a good idea.

I'm hesitant to ask for specific feedback since its Silverlight and not Html 5 or something cooler. Most people will be instantly turned off.

A form with just the persons name and email and optionally organization and how they plan to use the software. Something similar but much shorter from the optional one already on the download page.

Its the full version without any restrictions except it contains a watermark that links back to the site.

Even if I did put a compulsory form I would make it clear that you'll only be contacted for suggestions on product direction and never ever a sales pitch.

Ask HN: Should users be made to fill a form before downloading?

Hi,I have a dilemma related to the free download version of the my startup's software (www.graphitecharts.com/download). We are a silverlight based charting library with an aim to support WPF and Windows Phone 7 in the near future. I know most people here hate plug-ins but our aim is to focus on intranet and extranet applications and sites, and eventually support sharepoint and possibly...

I use a similar setup.

- Base: OSX (3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo, 8 GB RAM, 500 GB HDD)

- Guest 1: Windows 7 3 GB RAM, for VS 2010, for Silverlight development

- Guest 2: Win XP 512 MB RAM - for testing with IE6

- Guest 3: Ubuntu 9.04 (need to update)

This works really well, and Win 7 is snappy and VS 2010 works flawlessly. On OSX I always have Chrome, AntiRSI, Things, TextMate, Terminal, NetNewsWire and iTunes open.

A big advantage is that I can fearlessly install things on Windows, I simply back up the VM before any installs/updates.

This config does work pretty well, except 8GB RAM does fall short sometimes. In my experience, VM performance takes a nose dive the moment OSX starts swapping, this is something I watch and now have to re-boot almost everyday (gone are the month long sessions).

Re:New Macs’ resolutions: The wide range of Mac Display DPI on Thursday October 28, 2010 @12:45AM (#1841775)
The newer managed code UI libraries for Windows, WPF and Silverlight are built from the ground up to support resolution independence.

Re:Ask HN: Why do no other laptop manufacturers get it? on Thursday June 10, 2010 @01:15PM (#1420777)
The new sony z series has a lot of pixels. I don't know much about IPS or colors though, specs from the website below.

The VPCZ117GG/X - 13.1 (33.2 cm) wide (FullHD: 1920 x 1080) ; VAIO Display Premium, LED backlight, Adobe RGB 96% coverage

This should be deleted. This is linkbait and nothing else.

How is this Windows fault? If you run an mpkg on OSX and something you didnt specifically ask for gets installed is it Apple's fault ?
Re:The Buzzer on Sunday June 06, 2010 @06:55AM (#1408342)
Why does this keep getting downvoted ? I was fascinated by this article, I've never heard of this before and was expressing genuine excitement.

Re:To Microsoft, Open Source means "Windows Encumbered" on Monday May 24, 2010 @01:25PM (#1375127)
> Adobe is doing it with Flash. Sun/Oracle does it with Java. FOSS projects do it even with C/C++ code. Javascript, HTML, AJAX, PDF, .doc.

Adobe is doing it because its in their direct interest to port to as many platforms as possible.

> Microsoft claims that they have developed a "standard" called .net, so it's their responsibility to maintain the ecosystem in a manner that makes .net code portable.

When google started Android shouldn't they have used the already existing open standard J2ME for their stuff? But since they're google they can ignore any standard and fragment any space.

You cannot actually expect microsoft to invest millions of dollars into platforms where there is guaranteed to be no return. It is a standard, if you want to use go ahead and implement it yourself. Mono does this, they even get help from microsoft, including the testing suites to silverlight etc.

> Now you're just trolling.

No I'm not trolling. My point is its alright when google keeps its core revenue maker, its search engines, code and algos top secret. If however microsoft does the same for their core revenue streams they get called evil.

Also, even microsoft encourages people to use their stuff to build on top off, its just a different view point where a lot of it isn't open source.

Re:To Microsoft, Open Source means "Windows Encumbered" on Monday May 24, 2010 @01:15PM (#1375102)
Yes I have. Thats not what I meant, my point was if you use any company's work to build a product that eats into their own core revenue, they will go after you no matter how open they claim to be.
Re:To Microsoft, Open Source means "Windows Encumbered" on Monday May 24, 2010 @09:21AM (#1374575)
A sincere question, why is the onus on microsoft to make sure its .net stuff runs on "one of Google's new fangled hand-held devices"?

Also, how is "They continue to attack, with legal action or threats, any open source that competes with any of their core products." any different from what other companies do ? How do you think google would react if some one was to brand and name a search engine similar to theirs ? What about Red-Hat ? If I was to take their distro and start selling it as Red-Hat Enhanced Pro Super Cool version what you think their response would be.

The way I see it, its easy for companies like google to beat the open drum because it does not hurt their core business, microsoft however sees direct impact on revenue.

Re:Microsoft patent trolls Salesforce on Wednesday May 19, 2010 @12:58PM (#1361528)
My karma goes down 4 then up 4, and is pretty much stagnant. I should make a clarification here, I do not support patents at all. The above rant is merely directed towards double standards.
Re:Microsoft patent trolls Salesforce on Wednesday May 19, 2010 @12:14PM (#1361375)
I don't care if I get down voted to oblivion for this, but I can't take the assholery anymore. When Apple et. al. file such suits its strategic, when they arbitrarily try to kill stuff its also strategic and jobs being jesus.Microsoft so much as moves a muscle and Apple trolls that have infested todays 'new' media and companies such as the above swing into action. Fucking 37 signals, what a sad day indeed.

While encryption may save your data, you can't really brick the computer. Take out hard-disk throw in trash, replace with new 50$ disk, welcome to you're new macbook pro.

I think the timing on this post is perfect, re-directs attention from the gizmodo thing and prevents another john stewart from happening.
The folks at panic must be pretty bummed about this, transmit 4 was a major contender.
Re:Zed Shaw is Writing A Book Teaching Beginner Python on Saturday April 24, 2010 @03:51PM (#1291463)
I could have called this yesterday, after the spat on twitter, that he's going to write one. Soldier on Zed.
What no one seems to talk about is how many billion dollar companies tie into the microsoft stack, I can't think of any on the apple side of things.
